What film did you watch last night?

When Evil Lurks (on Shudder)

A rural community in Argentina deal with the appearance of something strange…

Another ‘refreshingly well done’ horror (!) - difficult to see where it was going and a very good ‘drip feed’ of story / ‘lore’.

I would have enjoyed this more than ‘Terrified’ (reviewed above) although this time I did have a gripe:

Argh why did he leave the ‘cleaner’ alone at the end!?! Whyyyy!!!! It was so obviously a trap. That blighted it slightly for me because it at that point the character was inviting his own tragedy. Although I suppose he was for the whole film…

From a quick look on Reddit, the theory is that there is a theme of pigheaded / stubborn men ignoring women… yep, I can definitely see that in retrospect. If the men would have listened to the women characters in this, they would have survived. Interesting.

Or, it’s about people (men) ‘making terrible decisions in stressful circumstances’. Also interesting.

Regardless, the journey as a whole was very satisfying - these things work better when there is a bit of ambiguity and ‘story beyond what you see’.

8/10

A great recommendation, thanks @Freakbro :)

Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

Been a while since I seen this, it's nowhere near as good as Pitch Black, which in my opinion is an 8/10 movie all day.

Still, despite it being, I dunno, kinda crap in a lot of ways it's got a style to it I like, some really dated looking CGI though.

Apparently they are planning a 4th.

The Batman (2022)

Decided to re watch for a third time before we start watching The Penguin TV series.

I think it's easily one of the best super hero films ever made. It just oozes style and atmosphere, great story, cast and acting, as well as some of the best cinematography ever. It also has the best Batmobile by a long way, I could listen to that thing all day long.

A Different Man. Surreal dark comedy/ drama about a man with a severe facial disfigurement that he allows to rule his life. He takes an opportunity to be part of a clinical trial that heals him, but as things start to turn around for him, he meets another man with a similar disfigurement who enjoys life, and the first man becomes despondent at what he's lost. Or perhaps what he could have chosen to do in relation to how he approached life.

Interesting 9/10

Crimes of the future 2020 ?/10

David Cronberg is quite simply one of the most perplexing writers/directors ive had the pleasure/confusion/bewilderment of watching.
ExistenZ, the fly and crash, the naked lunch. All films we've probably all seen?
Well add this to the list of "wtf did I just watch"
The guys an artist and aspects of the characters in this film are probably a good approximation to himself.
Bloody weird, squeamish people prepare to look away. :p my brain doesn't really operate function on the same level that this guys does... That's probably a very good thing.

Paddington in Peru (2024) - 8/10

A wholesome and charming adventure with plenty of fun and humorous slapstick moments, but it wasn’t as good as the other films in the series.

The story plays out as you would expect, complete with a feel-good moral message and a family friendly finale, but the new family actors and the overall family dynamic didn’t really work.

Paddington is as loveable as ever and the Peruvian setting was spectacular, but the cameos felt a bit pointless.

Red One (2024) - 5/10

A daft premise which was far too serious, but if you just go with it, it was entertaining enough.

The plot was ok with its light moral message and festive atmosphere (although it would have been a lot more effective had the film been released in December and not November!), but it was a bit slow in the middle and ran out of good ideas before the end.

The creatures, special effects and use of mythical / folklore characters was good and they all looked and acted the part, but the straight-faced attempts at humour weren’t funny and it could have been a lot more over-the-top in some scenes.

The Exorcist 3 (rented on Apple Store)

Despite ‘the’ jump-scare in this being a well known classic I’d never actually sat down to watch the whole film.

… not very good. Aspects of the set-up are great but it just sort of falls over towards the end and feels unsatisfying by the time the credits roll. A shame, as I think there was a good film in here, somewhere.

Funnily enough, I literally just finished the first film. Never seen it before somehow. I’ll need to check out this jump scare which I also had read is up there as one of the best.

Anyway.

The Exorcist - 6.5/10

Personally didn’t think it was all that great. I’m sure it was scary and ‘better’ at the time of its release. But it’s dated quite badly, at least from the make up of Regan and I found it a little slow.
