What film did you watch last night?

Not sure why but black and white films or ones that are dubbed / with subtitles just put me straight off. :(

I'm probably missing out but if it was colour then I'd be adding it to my watch list! I'm guessing it's this way all the way through the film?

B&W never put me off, some of those movies have better story telling than recent cgi fests. But i agree with the subtitles, that put me off for a long time, however, now i am over that, there are some amazing shows you are missing out on.

Missing out on some great films then. Especially older classics from before colour film was really a thing. I love old James Csgney films and some Hitchcock films.

The Fugitive

Enjoyed revisiting this great film. It has quite an 80s feel from the opening credits and music. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones both on top form. I can't think of many thrillers with such a big budget feel, it feels wide in scope but really rips along.

8/10

Starman (1984)

Watched this afternoon.

Didn't see this back when it was new and even if I had, I still think I would've found it a bit dull.

It's almost like E.T. for adults, but with out any of the charm or emotion.

Most of the film feels like shots of cars on roads, trains on tracks or helicopters flying by.

You’ll like this even less then as it’s presented in 4:3 ratio or thereabouts. And it’s black and white all the way through, yep!

If you don't like B&W movies, you haven't seen:

Schindlers List
Dr Strangelove
Psycho
To Kill a Mocking Bird
It's a a Wonderful Life - absolute mustwatch!
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Seventh Seal
Nosferatu

Also Laurel and Hardy :)

Though there is now a colourised version of Its a Wonderful Life. I tried watching it once. Couldn't finish, just doesn't have the same charm or feel as its original B&W version.

I don't get why people 'avoid' non wide-screen and/or non colour classics. Films like Angels with Dirty Faces or even modern ones like Clerks. The black & white really adds to them. Showing the era they were made.

For me it is more about modern day films that someone wants to be 'artistic' and does it black and white, or adds graining or something. I feel like it's hiring a Ferrari but putting wooden wheels on it. Look how often people (for some reason) comment how good a movie looks because they watched it in 4K HDR. The quality of what they're watching matters, so when someone decides their style is to not look as good as it could, I decide to not bother watching it. Just make a good movie, don't rely on a gimmick (like making it look like one long shot or something)

**EDIT** and I've tried to watch older movies, they just aren't as good (the ones I've seen). The pace is just so slow and often the plot is too simple and basic. (Although, I give you, I've not watched a lot of old movies)

Training Day - 8/10

This film completely pass me by - now almost 25 years old :o

Great film, Denzel on point as always. He plays any character so well, such a great actor.

Thing is you can get a lot of old B&W in 4K now. As they were shot on 35mm film for the most part they are at a high resolution when scan and mastered, sometimes removing blemishes and grain so the look crystal clear and sharp.

I find some modern films to be too in your face and simple without much real plot but lots of Visual effects and action to avoid having much of a plot. However with the old films the plot, story and character development is more complex and deeper so you get to know them and what their motivations are etc. Films like Psycho just work through the build up and suspense. They were usually more character driven, if they had 'effects' it would usually be matter paintings or massive set pieces. Like some older war films and gangster films. Movies like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, To Kill a Mockingbird are very character and story driven. So yes lots of talking for building plot and characters.

Even more modern ones like Schindler's List from Spielberg as the black and white helps draw you in to the era the film is set in.
