What film did you watch last night?

Smile 1 and 2

Didn't watch the first one when it came out not sure why guess it just didn't intrigue me. But the 2nd one came available a day or two ago and thought I'd sit down and watch them back to back to get it off my "to watch" list that just grows and grows haha

Great tension, jump scares are anoyying but there wasn't too many to ruin it, first was better than the second didn't like the whole singer/influencer storyline and over use of a mobile phone, just stick with tension and creepy vibes.

Late Night with the Devil (rented from Apple Store)

A troubled talk show host in the 70s tries to spice up his routine (and improve his ratings) with a Halloween special.

This is mostly presented as a 'real' American late night show with some backstage footage spliced in. As such, it feels more like 'an episode of an anthology show' than a full-on 'film'.

It's pretty good. Nothing heavy going and quite lean at 95 mins... and I couldn't tell where it was going, which is always a big plus.

Worth a watch if you fancy something 'different', spooky and quirky.

7/10

Gladiator II (2024) - 10/10

Entertainment at its finest, even if it is heavily in the shadow of its predecessor.

Spectacular fight and action scenes, wickedly evil politics and a great concept of scale from the epic battles to the one on one combat bouts.

It borrows heavily from the original in plot, characters and style, but there are more than enough differences to keep you engaged and the more African slant prevents it from being stale.

The story wasn’t as moving and overall the film will have less impact than the first, but the characters’ motivations were clear, their acting performances were superb and the music was rousing.

Watched this tonight. Hugely disappointed, it all felt so rushed and there was zero emotion for any of the characters. 5/10 tops for me.

The Thing (streamed on ‘Channel 4’)

An Antarctic research team investigates a neighbouring base after a shock encounter.

This is a bit like ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ for me. I’ve watched it to death, to the point where I could happily never watch it again.

But boy, is it good. Great aesthetic and setting, memorable characters and ‘best in class’ practical effects.

Having given it a few years since my last watch I found myself waiting less for ‘the good bits’. It’s definitely worth giving ‘over-watched’ films a bit of space.

Many of those (dozens) of previous watches were on ‘fuzzy’ DVD and it’s great to see it in higher quality. I always remember being astonished to see Copper’s nose ring for the first time.

10/10

Speak No Evil (2024)

I thought this was a really good film. It just keeps slowly ratching up the tension, without being boring. James McAvoy is great, as are the rest of the cast. It also didn't play out as I was expecting, especially after seeing a trailer at the cinema. Generally I try to avoid trailers.

There were a few minor points were a character does something they'd only do in a movie, but other than that it was actually a well thought out and believable story.

8/10

Red One - 7.5/10

I really enjoyed it. It probably got an extra .5 for it being an Xmas movie, but I thought they did it really well. Obviously, don't take it too seriously, but the effects were good, the story was fine and I thought the acting was good enough.

Gladiator II 4/10
2 nights ago. norwich I max.
Well, I'd been looking forward to this film for ages hoping that it would be great, but it failed to comply, the start was so boring it had me nodding off, and struggled to stay awake for the main story to begin.
Tthe main story had promise, and was alright, it just felt a bit rushed and not very well written, there was no room for much real acting in it, so I'm sure that most of it was filmed on the side with the actors being told that it will be edited fine

after 2 days thinking about it, there was only one clever film makery thing to get/understand. but at least there was something like that!
and after those 2 days, I'm even more convinced that some of the movie is just bizarre
If it was not for some okay cinematics, then it would be a 3/10 but this is ridley Scott after all, so there had to be some half decent cinematics in there
Worse movie I've seen in ages, and I went to see Godzilla X kong! 4/10

Try violent night next, that is what we are planning on doing in early december, since santa looks badass in red one, setting him up to be extra badass in violent night

I saw Wicked for the third time on Wed :p (long story)

I actually still really enjoyed it. I'd agree with the score above. I'm no fan of musicals, and I got taken to the stage show and didn't particularly like it. But by golly gosh can Cynthia Erivo sing. Girls got pipes on her. Absolutely amazing. I found myself emotionally sucked in to the story, definitely a few moments I had something in my eye. By all accounts if you're a fan of the stage show you're gonna absolutely lose your **** and love this :p But even if you're not, honestly it's worth a watch.
