What film did you watch last night?

The Killer's Game (2024)

Basically a riff on the John Wick films in terms of a one man against a bunch of other professional killers.

There's some original fight choreography here, a few laughs and a few winces from the on screen violence.

But the acting is generally poor, the dialogue is cringe at times, Dave Batista definitely doesn't have romantic scenes in his repatoire and whole thing seems pointless, when there are similar films that are so much better to watch. Such as the aforementioned John Wick, Atomic Blonde or Nobody.

4/10

Wicked (Part One) (2024) - 6/10

The acting’s great, the sets and choreography are spectacular, vibrant and full of colour and there are some great songs (in between them belting out notes for no reason), but it’s hard to recommend when so much of it is left unfinished.

The light plot fells drawn out, mainly focusing on the relationship between the two leads, with other characters barely used and other plot points never really explained.

There’s some good humour and attempts at defying traditional expectations but I never felt in awe or amazed at the magical world of Oz and the ending, whilst dramatic, felt rushed.

Wonka 8.5/10

I was skeptical when it was at out at the cinema but glad I finally caught up with it.
Paul Atreides was actually pretty decent and the rest of the cast were good support. A little slow and meandering at the start but once it got going. Fun.

Very wise to not mess with the original book and make it a little prequel.

After seeing heretic last week it was funny to see Hugh on a slightly different roll :p

Deadpool and Wolverine 7/10
The first Disney film I've bothered to watch in ages. Despite having a plot about as deep as a puddle, it was pretty entertaining and mostly left the agenda driven crap out of it. No classic, but enjoyable enough.

A few people talking about Smile 1 and 2, so gave the first one a try - 4/10.

Interesting premise, badly executed and overly long. There were a few good scenes.

I couldn't get on with the main actress either, was annoying! And for part of the movie i was trying to place the actor who played Trevor, A-Train! Annnnnnnnd, she told everybody what was happening and everyone thought she was psycho, but the one person who was trying to help (Joel, ex-boyfriend) she kept him in the dark - plot device :(

Like i say, the premise was interesting and some here have said Smile 2 is better, is it that much better it is worth a watch?

The Lighthouse - 9/10.

Bloody love this film. This is my first time watching it since the cinema and it looks glorious in 4K/DV on my new TV. How Willem Dafoe didn’t get more awards for his performance is beyond me. Robert Pattinson always give it his all too, I do enjoy how nothing is really off-limits for him.

Don't you mean Timothey Chalamet?

I caught it at the cinema and really enjoyed it.

“Don’t move” on Netflix. 6/10

This film won’t win any awards but I found it enjoyable and I wasn’t tempted to pick up my phone whilst it was playing which speaks volumes!

True Lies (1994)

Although I was a massive Arnie fan back then, this one never quite did it for me at the time. As a consequence, I've probably only seen it twice before.

I still don't think it's one of his best films, but they don't make them like this nowadays and so it was a pleasant change from the most of the modern rubbish that's churned out now.

7/10
Watched the 4k version last night

It's a slightly odd film because it's got two plotlines going on and one is dropped completely for basically an hour whilst Arnie gets jealous and does some quite weird things to his poor wife, despite lying to her for 17 years.

I did appreciate the practical stunt work and special effects, such as the lift from the limo sunroof to the helicopter and also the harrier jets, including one they suspended on a crane above that tower block in Miami.

It's funny how many stuntmen you can see are not Arnie throughout the movie though.

Logan's Run (1976)

Watched this yesterday afternoon. A film I have seen as a kid on TV, but never from credits to credits.

The first half of the film holds up quite well, but once they find Peter Ustinov's character, it all gets a bit boring. It's almost like they ran out of money and only had enough budget to film in one last set. With the journey back already filmed on previously used sets.

The actual escape doesn't really make any sense either. It's almost like they're going through the Crystal Maze zones rather than anywhere based in reality.

There's some great miniature work on show and some decent effects work for the time. But they would've been truly shown up within a year and the release of Star Wars.

Quite surprised by the PG rating, considering the amount of nudity and sexual references. But who am I to complain when you've got Jenny Agutter and Farah Fawcett in the film.

6/10

The Wild Robot (2024)

Our granddaughter came for a sleepover and she picked this.

The basic story isn't particularly original, especially for an animated film. But the visuals, art style, voice acting (apart from Bill Nighy) and characterization all combine to make it a really good and enjoyable film.

Not sure why but black and white films or ones that are dubbed / with subtitles just put me straight off. :(

I'm probably missing out but if it was colour then I'd be adding it to my watch list! I'm guessing it's this way all the way through the film?
