What film did you watch last night?

Any of the random, sickly sweet, made-for-TV Christmas films on Netflix/Prime

3/10 - I don't know why I watch so many of these awful films over Christmas, but I do! My girlfriend sticks them on and then for some reason I get sucked into them, even though they are all truly awful.

What You Wish For. Alright thriller/horror about a private chef and his friend who joins him on one of his contracts a few days before the guests arrive. Nick Stahl of T3 fame stars. 7/10

Die Hard (1988)

Well I loved it back in 1988, watched it to death on VHS and probably watch it at least once a year, especially at Christmas.

9/10

(half a point less than Predator, because I like that film a touch more)(There's also a few mistakes and exposion scenes that make no sense and still annoy me)

The VVitch (2015)

struggled to understand a lot of the dialogue. i wouldnt want to sit through it again

5/10

managed to creep up on the girlfriend, and scare the life out of her, when she was going to bed after the film had finished though.:D
she wasnt very happy with me.

Just watched Cinema Paradiso (theatrical cut) and really enjoyed it. Had seen it before nearly 20 years ago so didn't remember any of it but it was much much better than I remembered thinking then. Few deliberately unanswered questions from it but came away feeling both happy and a bit sad as I'm sure is intended. 8/10

Return Of The Jedi - 8.5/10

A great movie and fitting end to the trilogy. The Emperor is still one of my favourite baddies of them all too. The space battle looks brilliant in 4k as well.

All downhill from here as on to the prequels...

Mulholland Drive (4K) - 8/10.

An awesome Christmas present and I’m only 23 years late to the party.

Went through a lot of the film thinking ‘WTF’ (as you do with David Lynch) and then it all came together in the last 20-30 minutes.

Really enjoyed it on the whole and very atmospheric at points, thanks to Angelo Badalamenti’s score. Might see if I can source the soundtrack.

American Gigolo (1980)

It may have passed as an erotic drama back in 1980, but it hardly passes for a drama nowadays and there's nothing erotic about at all. No chemistry between the two leads and a story that's barely coherent, let alone believable.

To paraphrase from a truly great film. Some things age like fine wine. American Gigolo aged liked vinegar.

On the plus side it did produce a great Blondie song.

3/10

Paddington 2

Similar to the first film although not quite as charming IMO as celebrity actors are a little distracting.

Paddington himself is very likeable. I enjoy how the film is brazen enough to just allow the bear to wonder around and interact with everyone (nobody batting an eyelid) without typical ‘over-explanation’. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, but these Paddington films show that less is more in these regards.

With that said, I found myself frequently bemused at how liberal the film was with its locations:

“Iguazu falls isn’t in Peru…?”
“… isn’t that Kilmainham Gaol?!”
“I wish the actual train route from London to Paddington was this whimsical…”

My suspension of disbelief was totally and utterly destroyed when Paddington disguised himself as a bin in Paddington Station. If you’ve ever been there, you’ll know there isn’t a single ****ing bin anywhere near the platforms - it’s maddening I tell you!!! :p

Good fun, will try to catch the 3rd film in the cinema :)

7/10
