What film did you watch last night?

I've just seen the new Wallace & Gromit on BBC 1.

I'm sure there is some CGI in this day and age, but it still looked visually faithful to its stop motion. It had some James Bond themes such as the bad guy stroking a fluffy white pet while sat in his Mastermind-style chair and the chases were Bond-esque. Still all very innocent though.

6.5/10

I was underwhelmed, it was too long and not so tightly plotted as the wrong trousers, a grand day out etc.

5/10

I'm not sure it was just the plotting at fault with the new Wallace + Gromit.
The gnomes themselves just didn't quite fit the vibes of the previous installments, and the whole world felt just 'off' somehow. Some of this was I think the modernisation of stuff.....

Eminently watchable, but nowhere near the class of the predecesors.

Dark Game (Netflix) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5613018/

An easy one to get into, however, at times, I thought the acting was a bit weak, especially the lead detective.

But overall, an enjoyable watch that didn't out stay its welcome. The antagonist played his part very well indeed!

With less than a 5 out of 10 rating on IMDB, I'd give this higher than that. Not quite sure what, but around 5.5 — maybe a 6.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) - 7/10

Enjoyable and exciting with some funny moments amongst all the quips and good animated effects.

The plot has its heart and humour in the right place with the emotional heft of the story well told, although the explosive finale makes little sense and the ending goes on for a bit too long.

Great villain double act with the right amount of silliness, enthusiasm and entertainment from Carrey and plenty of fast paced if predictable action scenes.

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) - 5/10

Impressive to see with its stunningly animated scenery and creatures but the excessive realism makes it hard to distinguish the creatures apart and as such, they lose some personality.

The plot is nothing special for an origin story and as it’s a prequel, you know how it’s going to end and the danger scenes lose all suspense. Even though it bounds along at a steady pace and frequently cuts back for a barrage of fourth wall breaking jokes it still manages to be boring at times.

Passable entertainment but since the songs replace the narrative rather than being stand-alone pieces, they aren’t as catchy or memorable.
