What film did you watch last night?

Been a bit busy to post over the last week or so.

The Block Island Sound (2020)

Starts off quite well with an interesting premise, but it's generally a bit dull and only curiosity keeps you watching

5/10

Paper Moon (1973)

A black and white film set during depression. Ryan O Neal and his daughter, Tatum star and she steals the film. We both really enjoyed this one, highly recommend.

8/10

Venom: The Last Dance (2024)

Easily the weakest of the three films, which isn't saying much.

4/10

The Substance (2024)

Credit to Demi Moore for literally laying herself bare for all to see and be critical of her aging face bod. Admittedly she's had obvious work and still looks good. But that's sort of the point of the film. Either way it doesn't make it a great film, but it's not terrible either.

5/10

The Eiger Sanction (1975)

Take away the outstanding climbing cinematography and Clint doing all his own stunts and there's just a husk of a spy thriller left. Poor.

4/10

Signs (2002)

Didn't do for me. But I must be in the minority, considering the amount of money it made. I just found the whole thing daft and full of movie stupid.

2/10

Alien Romulus

its got some nice stuff - ring smashy action was pretty, andy guy was good, some good ideas but ultimately a bit meh - doesnt really add anything to the concept, kind of bashing the toys together type film

The French Connection. Multi Oscar winning but IMHO of its time and now overrated in retrospect. It’s ok but the first act is disjointed and the characters are one dimensional so I didn’t really care for them too much.

Interesting. I love that film and the whole premise of things happening for a reason even if you don’t understand them at the time.

Better Man - 7/10

Enjoyable biopic of Robbie Williams career from childhood to early 2000s. Felt it handled high mental health and drug/alcohol issues well and the cast were all good.

Sure if you aren't a fan of RW then it will have less appeal but it's still a good watch. The fact he is presented as a chimp might put people off but he doesn't see himself as normal and has said he felt like a performing monkey at times so that's why it was decided he would be that way.

Presence (2024).

7/10. A nice change from the sort of films I've been watching lately, not overly long, and kept me engaged throughout. :)

Nosferatu - new one. 9/10

Dang that was some good ****.
Best film I seen in a while.
Beautifully filmed.
Great acting by everyone... Literally everyone.
Really nicely done rendition of the old ideas and stories.
Hate to say it but I found it pretty dull. I agree that stylistically it looked nice but I was clockwatching while it was on, an instant sign that something isn't great. 4/10 from me.

Alien Romulus.
Quite enjoyed it but not a patch on some of the others.... 1, 2, Prometheus and Covenant.
Just watched this on a plane to Doha. I think I probably spoiled it for myself watching it on a 5 inch screen instead of at home on oled with Atmos but I'd give it 5/10 with a possible upgrade to 6/10 as I bet it's visuals and audio are far more immersive than I experienced.

Bram Stoker's Dracula 4/10
I remembered this being better when I first watched it, boy was I wrong. This is more Romeo and Juliet undead, than a Dracula movie.

Nosferatu 2024 6/10
Kind of dull but looks great and the story flows well enough to keep me entertained

But Count Orlok voice kept reminding of Nandor and I couldn't take him seriously.

Dangerous 4/10 2021

Scott Eastwood (Clint's son) Mel Gibson and Famke Janssen star.

If you like Jack Reacher, then you might like this. I just thought it was plot we've seen so many times. Don't mind the cliched baddies take over somewhere, but the story, location was just - naff.

Wouldn't have realised it was Clint's son! I was thinking Sondra Locke is his Mum (it isn't). Watching Scott in this film, it's the first I've seen him in I think - He has some of his dad's mannerisms and understandably, likeness; Not obvious though. Wouldn't have guessed his dad without knowing beforehand though.

The First Omen - 7/10

Surprisingly pretty good for a prequel to a horror series with more misses than hits. Director's first film too! Probably suffers a little from having to fit in with the original film rather than being it's own tale.

Cliffhanger - 1/10 but also 10/10 simply because it ended, there was no cliffhanger, so disappointed even though it was cool to see a retired Rambo trying to live a peaceful life as a mountain rescue only for villains to force him out of retirement before he eventually moves into space and becomes Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy which makes the ending when he pays his respect to Yondu that extra special because they've clearly been friends for a very long time going back to their mountain rescue days, because yep, pre Yondu Yondu is in the film as not yet Stakar Ogord's friend or perhaps frenemy because he blames retired Rambo for the death of his girlfriend but the character arc ends up with them being friends again because they beat the villians through some memorable deaths. Dr Dick Soloman as the alien pretending to be the English villain was okay I guess but his English accent was terrible, I do hope he improved it when he went back in time to pretend to be Winston Churchill in The Crown, I haven't watched that yet so don't know

I'm struggling to read any of that, but that was a classic back in the day; I loved it.
