What film did you watch last night?

La La Land
Did know anything before starting. Was going to walk away after first scene and opening, but stuck with it and really enjoyed it.

Oh that's good to hear. I remember watching a few years back and switched off after the first scene too. Sounds like I have to give it another go.

I even tried to go on a Cronenberg marathon, especially since 'The Fly' was fantastic, but his films are definitely not for me despite me being an albeit mainstream horror fan.
You need to watch Cronenbergs films while ‘enjoying’ hallucinogenics, I recommend mushrooms. Then you’ll not be sure if what you’re watch is actually part of the film or some mad trip you’ve taken, which makes his films infinitely more fun.

Cocaine Bear - loved the premise, but found the film a bit flat. 6/10

Alien Romulus - I love the first two (and Prometheus) and felt this was a worthy addition to the franchise. Some very cool moments, lovely cinematography, decent enough acting (usually I can't stand things where 'kids' are the main characters). The actor who played Andy the AP did a fantastic job. Nice nods to the other films, a genuinely scary xeno-baby at the end and planet ring CG action goodness. 8/10

Flow. Animated drama about a cat and some other animals in a humanless world dealing with a flood. No dialogue just animal noises. Good one for all the family and barrels along. Short runtime in relative terms. 9/10

Top Gun: Maverick

I'd heard this was better than expected, but I still wasn't expecting much. In fact, it delivers extremely well. Yes, the story is predictable, cheesy, and not terribly believable. Yes, it leans heavily on callbacks to the original movie. But it's got a good heart, looks good, has a great soundtrack, Tom Cruise is a great actor alongside a strong cast, and it hits each of its beats with aplomb. It really is the epitome of the old style of blockbuster movie and the right kind of enjoyable candyfloss.

Great fun, and well worth a watch 8/10.

Back in Action (2025) - 7/10

A bit of everything with action, comedy and family drama, but mostly, it’s a lot of fun.

There’s good acting and chemistry between the leads, the kids are funny and the over the top action is entertaining with some good music choices.

The story and premise is nothing new and the pacing and editing could have been better, but it was quite enjoyable if you don’t try to take it seriously.

National Treasure, Book of Secrets. Not really a fan of Nicholas Cage but it’s the kind of film I do enjoy, moves a long at a good pace which passes 2 hours quickly.

Heretic. Started off well, but 2nd half was mediocre.

Subservience. TV series "Humans" was so much better.
