What film did you watch last night?

Working my way through Batman V Superman but one thing that is getting on my **** ....

Amy Adams .... what a crap actress and she's playing the lead lady which for me has bought the whole experience down a few notches

I'm pretty angry actually
Standard or extended cut? Hopefully the extended it's far better,

Couple more Disney films knocked out. Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast (original animated version)

Yup. they're Disney films. Beauty and the Beast has some nice use of CGI for the ballroom which is pretty impressive for the year it was made.

Got just over 2 months to knock the rest out. Need to get busy. Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, Dinosaur, Little Mermaid (original version), Emperors New Groove, Aladdin, Sword in the Stone, Mulan, Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, Winnie the Pooh, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Three Caballeros, Fantasia, Pinocchio, Enchanted, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bedknobs and Broomsticks aaaand finally Goofy Movie. Ooof..

That's the Disney I've always liked. The classics era while Walt Disney was still alive, the 1990s comeback decade (Beauty, Aladdin etc) and the 2000s with Lilo & Stitch. I can also extend it to the 2010s with Tangled, Frozen and Moana, but I lose interest as soon as there are any politics involved. I'm also not interested in Star Wars or Marval. Disney to me needs to be just Disney, and is very much like what your post is ^^

I'm in 2 minds about the new Snow White. I want to see it because it's one of the Disney classics, but at the same time, there's been too much politics around it e.g. the appearance of the dwarves.

I'm very much looking forwards to the Lilo & Stitch remake though!

Honestly beg to differ on this one

She's God damn awful.... Please suggest a movie in which you feel she performed well so that maybe I can make a better judgement

Amy Adams plays Giselle in Enchanted (2007) and Disenchanted (2022). Give 'em a try :-)

The Blair Witch Project - Second Sight Edition - 8/10

I found this version a lot better. This ‘proper’ intended version is a little more convincing and immersive. To me, visually it really is night and day. The acting is still a little wonky, of course. (Yes, Mike, I’m looking at you.) And the shrieking from Heather still makes me cringe.

Here’s some of why this version is worth a pop if you enjoyed the original.

TLDR: The original print had to be manipulated for the cinema release, so wasn’t quite as intended visually and FPS-wise. This same cinema print was then used for the DVD/BD releases until this new Second Sight version.

The film was shot on hi-8 and 16mm. The 16mm was transferred to video, taking it from 24 frames per second to 30 frames per second (the standard for video at the time). All of it was loaded into an editing machine and the final edited version was then "burned" onto DigiBeta tape. That tape is technically the "negative" of the movie. But in 1999, movies only had film negatives, there were hardly any mainstream distributed films shot on video. To distribute the movie, as well as screen it at Sundance, they had to make a 35mm print, as no theaters could show video at the time.

So the theatrical version everyone saw was hi-8 (30fps) and transferred 16mm film (24fps converted to 30fps) all converted to 35mm film at the standard frame rate of 24fps. It wasn't ideal, but it was all that could be done at the time.

Micky 17 (at the cinema)

A person signs up to a space mission where he keeps being brought back to life (or ‘re-printed’) when he dies.

God, this was weird.

It’s advertised as being a light black comedy sci-fi, but it’s far less ‘conventional comedy’ than I expected… almost ‘dry’ at times. I’d say it’s more bemusing than outright funny… but I was chuckling at the silliness now and again.

Some characters were good and had personality. Others were a little too satirical. In particular, having an ‘all-powerful, ego-maniac idiot leader’ is rather on-the-nose right now :o

Lots of scenes lingered in bizarre and irrelevant ways, which together with the offbeat humour gave it a strange tone. The ending was a little strange as well and I imagined a lot of people just thought “what the heck was that.”

Points for being a bit different though.

Legends of the Fall (1994)

A film that would've passed me by when it was released. After all, it was the same year as Pulp Fiction and that's one of my favourite films of all time.

Having watched it now, I still wished it had passed me by. Even though the cinematography is great and it has Brad Pitt doing his smouldering thing, with hair that could've only been washed with Timoteí. It's still a quite dull and predictable melodrama, that feels like you've watch a three hour film by the end of it, despite it only running for two and a quarter.

The Gorge, 6/10.

Watched this on ATV+ last night, films around 2hrs long. I really enjoyed the film, and not just because it had Anya Taylor-Joy in it. Story is fairly light, go to some random place on the planet to stop X bad things escaping, find love in said dark place and end up in some predicament where you need rescuing.

Story moves along at a reasonable pace never really felt like it was dragging, the action scenes are pretty good and Anya Taylor-Joy really does have a fantastic figure.

Not a film you’d watch over and over, but one I’d have no problem watching again if I couldn’t find something that interested me one late night.

BJ - Mad about the boy, wifey made me watch it!

Wow, HG looks ancient as does RZ who is rough and almost unrecognisable. I know that's life, but they got old :(

It was quite dark at times, all the previous true love wins was undone in the first few mins, which shadowed the rest of the movie. However, all comes good and the ending was well done.

I don't like what they did with Mr Darcy's character, but as they were adamant on cashing in on another sequel, then i understand why they did it.

Worth a watch for the wifey brownie points i got.

Citizen Kane (on BBC iPlayer)

A famous billionaire dies, leaving people to speculate what his confusing last words meant.

Watched about a week ago. I’d never seen this so… about time! It suffers from being dated in all the ways a film from the 40s would be. Otherwise, it is a very good film.

I can see why people might find the ‘fuss’ about this film a little overstated / overrated. At face value, it might all seem a little pointless; there isn’t really any hero to root for or any villain to hate. But there is a lot to read into the subtlety. Quite the cautionary tale.

My own thoughts, having not read any commentary:

Even though he was abusive and mistreated others, I ended up feeling very sorry for Kane.

His whole life he seemed to be subconsciously compensating (and pining) for the love and attention of the parents who abandoned him, too perpetually hurt to ever really focus on other people beyond what they could mean for him.

The ending shot of all the tat he had collected was effectively a symptom of, and a blunt metaphor for, all the baggage that he carried with him that he couldn’t move on without.

All he ever wanted in the end was to feel how he felt that day when he played in the snow.

Very sad.

One that’s stayed with me after watching - deffo thought provoking.

9/10 - timeless in many ways, but dated in others which some may find distracting.

Princess Mononoke (1997) - 8/10

An elegantly told story of how humans forget the old ways in the name of progress.

It’s a bit slow at times but is inventive and inspiring with plenty of spiritual eastern folklore and fantasy characters, each of whom have their own personalities and growth arcs.

The animation is beautiful, the soundtrack is stirring and there’s a good amount of action and a small bit of humour, but it seemed to meander through its plot and ending rather than know what it wanted to say.

Yep I always found this a bit plodding and unnecessarily slow to resolve. I found myself wanting to enjoy it more than I actually did.
