The Northman (2022) - 9/10

An epic film with a straightforward story and effective use of Norse mythology.

Its intense rituals, powerful imagery, guttural and pounding music and display of culture in its authentic setting makes for an entertaining and memorable experience.

Stunning scenery, brutal and bloody fight scenes and great acting performances, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Just watched Shutter Island. Found it rather tedious, the numerous flashbacks, cutting back and forth and ponderous scenes playing over and over all rather boring. I see the word 'gripping' used in a lot of the Imdb reviews, the constant tedium prevented that ever taking a hold for me.

Come the end and the alleged reveal, i just didn't care. Probably the most underwhelmed I've ever been with a DiCaprio role and performance, Ben Kingsley on the other hand was fantastic.

A fan of mystery thrillers, but this was pondering stretched out boredom.

I'll give it some points as a few of the action scenes were ok.

Exactly how I felt about this film! A couple of good sequences but the rest.

Normally I'll re-watch a Bond but zero desire to do so with No Time to Die as it makes me angry. ;)

Spectre was the start of the downward spiral, daft plot and even watching Spectre again, in comparison to No Time, its half decent and that's saying something.

Hopefully Barbara Brocolli realises that Bond does not need to change with the times? Hell, why not recreate the series at the time of the books - at least then it would cancel out all the nonsense creeping in.

It's gone gradually downhill from Casino Royale I'm not a big fan of Craig as Bond, but Casino Royale was just a good film.

No Time to Die was just bad, and probably Craig's worst acting performance too.

I agree. I reboot set back in the previous decades could be good with the right director, and actor as Bond.

Casino was a huge success as it removed all the nonsense and went back to basics, I agree it is by far the best Craig film.

The later films, the change of core characters Felix, Blofeld, etc, I don't want to go into too much details as it will spoil for others. omnom hopefully this answers your "question".

Not really no. Im not sure thats "nonsense" tbh, what was wrong with the change of Felix? There is a "spoiler" feature here...

Kinda takes a few left turns which took me aback a bit, as I wasn't expecting that kind of subject matter at all. The way it plays out at the very end felt very 0-100; it all seems to hit within the last 5-10mins. I had to pause the film and just step through what happened to work it out. I was thinking I was going to be blown away by the cinematography given the hype about what a pretty film it is, but it didn't wow me the way, say, Blade Runner 2049 did (different genres, but still). Benedict was very good in it. 7/10

The Northman
Watched The Lighthouse recently and really loved it, so I was kind of excited for this, though the plot seemed a bit generic and less room for the crazyness that was present in The Lighthouse. It was decent. Nothing particularly stood out for me. Nicole Kidman was ok I guess, but the story was, as I thought, a bit generic.
The thing I really didn't like was the prophecy at the start was too on-the-nose. Like just about word-for-word. It didn't feel like I was watching a story unfold, I was just following my finger along a maze that someone's already finished
