What film did you watch last night?

Blink Twice. 2/10

Thought this was supposed to be a good movie.

Was boring for the first hour and a bit and then got some violence towards the end.

Wish i watched Cliffhanger instead. :D

The Cliffhanger reviewer there clearly not old enough to get a "and John Walton Snr, off of The Waltons, moonlighting as a helicopter pilot, when he should have been helping John-Boy with the saw mill" reference in.

Monsters: Dark Continent (2014) - 2/10

Sequel to the original Monsters (2010), which has nothing to do with the initial film at all...apart from using some monsters as scenery. It is very odd.

The first film was about aliens landing on earth and an exclusion zone being established in Mexico which couldn't be crossed due to risks involved as this was our means to contain them from spreading. A reporter or something has to escort a rich mans daughter through the mess and onto a plane/boat home. During the course of the adventure they fall for each other etc. It is a charming film where the 'monsters' aren't really hostile and they're just trying to survive as our two lovers head to the border.

Dark Continent is a desert war film in Afghanistan with some of these monsters in it. It is a very odd decision because the film is just outright rubbish and I've no idea why I am writin...

Nosferatu - 9/10

A visual and audio masterpiece. I love Bram Stokers Dracula and I couldn't wait to see this one. There are so many incredible visual moments where you just gasp at the use of lighting, followed by a great cast acting their heart out (hurrr) and to top that off, our big bad is terrifying. It took me ages to realise that the actor playing Thomas Hutter was the same lad I watched in Skins decades ago!

Nosferatu - 7/10

I'm not totally sure on scoring this one, it was a really well done film, good atmosphere good acting but it just lacked a little something to bring it all together for me. Definitely an arthouse/theatrical type of film, so won't be in everyones tastes, with some great nods to the old original.

I've only seen Northman by Eggers and it's got his vibe all over this one as well. The Lighthouse has been on my watch list for ages, I'll have to get around to that one.

Pretty much my opinion on this film too. It looks fantastic, but it's definitely missing something to make it a really great film. The pacing is definitely off and to me it's just not scary enough.

The lighthouse is a really weird film, definitely not for everyone. Very art house. Worth a watch though.

The Lighthouse I think is still on 4OD or whatever it’s called these days. Definitely been on Film4 recently.

I think The Norseman is fantastic.

Nosferatu - Absolute pants

What a waste of actors ability.

They did nothing with Nosferatu

Don't waste your time
I'm gonna watch it over weekend, not sure what to expect, I've seen The lighthouse and liked it, I've seen the Norseman and liked that too, I've read that Nosferatu is a bit more mainstream?

Last night - Shawshank redemption 8.5/10 it's a great movie but it ain't the greatest movie ever, not by a long way.

If you've liked Eggers other films I'd say you'd enjoy this

Nosferatu, I haven't watched it yet but has sparked such a vast array of different reviews :D

The arthouse style is really marmite tbf

Gladiator II - 6/10

The original is one of my favourite films, but this was dissapointing. The story was weak with too many nods and winks to the original and the collesium fights nothing to write home about.

Nosferatu

This initially feels ‘fresh’ with how slow and ambling it is, but it quickly becomes very boring. It’s the same vampire film you’ve seen / read a million times. If you’ve read Dracula… well, it’s not exactly that but… yeah, pretty darn similar.

The ye olde language choice becomes distracting at times. Just imagine Willem DeFoe saying “hear ye hear ye olden men and maids!” and if that sounds grating then chances are you will also find this film grating.

I don’t think it’s a complement to say that the infrequent strong but mostly implied violence adds a bit of pep to the trudging vibe.

Final comment; it does always make me laugh that these epicly powerful vampires are slowed down by, and always diligently comply with, the bureaucracy of a real estate transaction.

5.5/10

Oddity 7.5/10

Very unsettling, couple of great jump scares too.

Watched this based on your comments - wifey loves supernatural stuff. When the one eyed guy came to the door, i realised it was a clip i had seen on FB and thought, "i must check out the name of that move" and never did!

We both enjoyed this, although it did take 45mins to actually get going. You're right about the jump scares! The very first jump scare was on par with the Haunting of Hill House car scene. The wife screamed and had me pause the movie to catch her breath - she's not normally a screamer (oo-er).

I don't base a movie on jump scares, it was just a good movie, creepy, good story and the actress playing the sister and the Doctor were very good.

Flight Risk (2025) - 6/10

A serviceable run of the mill thriller with a more traditional presentation style.

The ‘cabin fever’ of the setting doesn’t really get intense enough and as the story adds in more elements and comical characters, it muddles the atmosphere.

The scenery was nice, the acting was good and the special effects were alright, but nothing really stood out as good or bad and the ending pretty much unfolds as expected.

The Brutalist - brilliant film about a Jewish immigrant who is an architect who escapes europe around end of ww2 for the USA and chases the American dream. Has a 15 minute intermission built in due to 3hr 35m run time! 9/10

Flight Risk - Acceptable thriller set on small plane about a US Marshall escorting a witness to safety however the pilot is an assassin for the mob who want that witness gone! 6/10
