What have you done to your car today?

Figured out a novel way to keep a small flight case without it moving about in the boot, using highly sticky velcro pads. Made use of that shelf space. Finally as well. two birds, one stone.

Had an annoying couple of days on pa's Land Rover. It's currently got a Weber 28/36 DCD carburettor on it - I don't know what jets it has in there but it's quite clearly too much carburettor for a 7:1 comp 2.25 petrol Landy. It barely gets into double figures for fuel consumption, which even for a Land Rover is pathetic. We bought a Zenith 36 IV to go on it a while back, which pa rebuilt with a kit so we knew that it was jetted correctly for the Land Rover engine.

I figured it would be an easy swap back to the standard Zenith, but I hadn't reckoned on just how much had been taken off or adapted to fit the Weber. Turns out that part of the throttle linkage has been removed entirely in the past, as the Weber has the throttle control on the side facing the passenger side of the car and the Zenith has it facing the firewall. There's supposed to be a sort-of bell crank arrangement that mounts to a spindle in the inlet manifold, which is now long gone. Going to have to either find one or make something. Also, there's a piece between the inlet manifold and carb that adapts the bolt pattern to the Zenith that has been taken out. Unfortunately, I only realised just how much was missing when I had the Weber off the car and offered the Zenith up to see how fitment was going to work. I ended up just making myself some new gaskets to refit the Weber, and tuned on it for a while to try and lean it out some (it was that rich before that you could fire it off without the choke even on a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery cold day). Between some mucking around with ignition timing (no timing light, just guestimating it based on how the engine sounded!) and fiddling with both mixture control and idle speed I have it running well again. Still hosing far too much fuel through, so options are finding the bits to make the Zenith fit as I said earlier or re-jetting the Weber. Oh, and the 3rd option - get a cylinder head that's 8:1 compression, have it milled for 9:1 and throw a hotter bumpstick in, do some work on the ports and take advantage of the extra fuel and air that the Weber is supplying :D
 
Impreza's cambelt was due in May, well under on the mileage though. Haven't really used it much recently but made a start on it tonight. Was working until 7 so only got an hour or so before I ran out of light but made good progress. The engine bay looks so full on first glance but once you remove a few things there's loads of room to get your hands (and in my case, body) in there.

Well, I seem to have nearly all the parts required for my power steering conversion either delivered or out for delivery today. Need to order a few specific bolts from the local dealer to collect one evening and jobs a good'un.

Fun weekend ahead! Just need to figure out how to detach the electric motor from the current column without the car throwing a wobble, consensus seems to be to remove the pinion gear somehow, so will have a look at that!
 
Replaced the rear shocks as a MOT advisory:

Pushing the old ones down and they stay that way:

Replaced with a pair of Sachs for £70.

May have a go at replacing the front ones if it's not too complicated, the rear is torsion bar so simple swap out but the front has springs.
