What have you done to your car today?

MOT for another year, another clean pass, not bad for a car that will be 3 decades old next year

lack of use may have something to contribute to that mind :D

E30 will be due its MOT soon. I don't think I'll be as lucky this time, I have a feeling it will fail on a few bushes and things. But I'm just going to stick it in for a test and see what comes back.

Took the Crown on a 400 mile drive, which was about 70% motorway and A roads at 65MPH (GPS) and the rest town and country lanes, and averaged a whopping 30MPG.

And got caught speeding by a local speed camera in the last few miles of the journey... I think I was doing about 37 - 39MPH in a 30MPH. My head was full of thoughts of home, and I somehow just didn't notice. :o

So that will be either £100 and the course on Zoom, or £60 and 3 points. I guess we'll see. Maybe we'll get lucky and I won't get anything. Who knows! It will be my first recorded offense since I started driving 10 years ago. :p

Random test intervals!
Early 22 it was off the road to get the chassis/subframes blasted, powder coated and polybushed. Though admittedly I can't remember the exact reason for the 6 month gap prior other than likely just not driving it.... this year, well the weather has just been to crap to bother.

A Jaguar indie specialist in Charlton has taken it in. Diagnostics yesterday were inconclusive as to whether it is plug, coil or injector. Scheduled to be properly investigated on 13th April. Until then they have lent me a 2003 XJ6 which is a slightly different ride!
My F-type trials and tribulations continue. Full set of sparks at £700 did not resolve the problem. Warranty company is being arsey about approving the necessary work to remove and replace the injector. Injector is also almost certainly jammed (common problem with Jags) and I want to know if they will pay for a) a specialist injector remover or b) pay for the possible work if the injector snaps.

There is a serious design fault in the f where the bonnet vents allow rain to get to the top of the engine and pool around the injectors and under the supercharger that leads to injector failure and also corrosion that makes getting them out very difficult. Driving them in the rain isn't an issue as the water will evaporate away; it's leaving them standing in the rain that seems to be the problem.

what was actually done underneath - with the transmission/drive shafts all removed ?.... new suspension arms, seems like major heart surgery.

Stripped to shell and repainted. Box, transfer case and rear diff sent away to be rebuilt - revised 3rd and 4th slightly taller, plates set up properly in the diff. ACD pump refurbished. Lots of powder coating. Bolts and linkages either replaced or refurbished. SuperPro polybushes throughout.

Engine rebuilt, engine bay and front end repainted. Interior retrimmed, all interior plastics carbon layered. Pretty much everything has been replaced or refurbished in the last 18 months.

Have had the same done with my Impreza but that hasn't had major engine work. The total cost of the Evo engine and loss of "stock/original" put me off.

snapped the plastic trim "grab handle" off the boot off my nissan QQ... :( its a common fault on my model of car - 2012 old shape.

its an awful design and completely forseeable.

so my next man job

Have you had to replace a rear tail light yet?

My eldest has one of these as a baby chariot and I could not believe you have to buy a whole new light cluster!

no ...... fingers crossed i dont have to then!. what a disgraceful design.

bulbs are a consumable item and should be a simple swap out for the owner.

mind you my other car is a pug 308 and i ended up having to get the local mechanic to change my battery............ and it took him over 20 mins with all the tools.

Presumably this is related to newer ones with LED clusters or something?

There's loads of videos and guides about replacing tail lights on these

Don't know on the new QQ but this was for the MK1.

The rear light is LED and fixed into the cluster - in fairness, you could probably bodge it but the cluster had blown anyway so was easier to change.

On the M.O.T I had an advisory for brake balance in general. Whilst the wear on the front pads was okay and even one of the boots was split. Rears looked fine yet one side the pads were very low so think that had been sticking too. Bought a front and rear rebuild kit and painted them up. This will be my 4th set of callipers I have done now. Quite therapeutic actually.

Purchased this little neat gizmo that runs off a compressor. Makes bleeding the brakes a breeze. Simply squeeze the trigger and undo the nipple. Even comes with a vial that goes into the reservoir to keep it full of liquid. The old stuff was quite dark but flushed it out with RBF600. Brake pedal feels divine now.

Updated my '02 CRV to 2023! Now have wireless Android Auto, while keeping the car completely original.

I know to most people it probably seems mad to even worry about it on such a mundane car, but it's a car that's part of the family:D

Nice install. Is that not really low down and impossible to use while driving though? Especially set back in there like that.

Thanks!

I did it more for listening to music than maps etc, but it's easily within arm's reach if needed. "OK Google" works a treat for skipping or changing music

My 3 Series has the Hifi sound system which is nothing special but is ok. Eventually I will consider buying a replacement amp for the OEM one but not just yet. I read some posts that say that there is a space by the front centre speaker to mount a tweeter - the Harman Kardon system has a tweeter fitted here but Hifi does not - and fitting a tweeter does actually make a good difference to the sound. The car already has front left and right tweeters so I wasn't sure how much difference a 3rd at the front would make, but I thought it was a cheap thing to try.

The speaker has the connector for a tweeter already so it is literally a plug and play thing and takes only a couple of minutes. Didn't take a before pic but here is what it's like as stock:

£14 and 5 minutes later:

Most awkward bit is getting the screws in at the back where it's so close to the windscreen.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised. Cheap as chips and there is definitely a noticeable difference. I like it. I know some people actually disconnect the centre speaker because it messes up stereo separation, but it's in a car which is hardly an ideal environment for audio anyway. In all honesty I'd barely noticed the centre speaker having any effect on anything at all before adding the tweeter.
