What have you done to your car today?

Your terminology is all wrong, but I know, and I will test drive one, but I also wan't a car which sounds good....... :p

May also test drive an Octy VRS/Leon FR.

Shame I didn't make it to the meet, you could have had a go in mine - it wasn't much more money than that Toyota and is much quicker!

Or just buy a car with a bigger engine and live life happy.

Only downside of larger displacement is fuel economy but in pure driving terms a larger displacement 6 cylinder is definitely better - nicer noise too :)

Tis a kind offer, but I would have had to stay in the car park, else we would both risk getting in deep trouble. :p

You don't have DOC cover? Watch out when you're test driving with dealers! Some will just assume you've got it

I believe I am too young to have DOC cover. And I thought most dealers have insurance which covers me being able to test drive their cars? I make a point of asking if they have trade insurance to cover me driving the cars. - They have all said yes.

Acme I don't really know your situation but I see your posts in this thread mentioning the budget etc.

Does your situation not lend itself to a cheap 330 bmw? I've had a string of m54b30 powered BMWs over the last few years which I've mainly used as cheap workmobiles (i do a lot of business mileage), they are dead cheap now and you seem the type to be happy to fettle a car when it plays up.....

Ask to see a copy of it! The type of dealer having a 3k car might not bother

My budget is a little bit fluid, for want of a better word.

I have just started working full time, so right now my preferred budget is around £3K, but in a couple of months time, I could spend around £5K.

It was my intention to wait until I had saved a little bit more, but I couldn't resist going to look at that Corolla, as it was local, and looked to be mint from the advert.

You should drive some other cars with a bit of power, the Toyota really, really isn't a very special car.

I know there seems to be a lot of unusual love for it on here, but coming from a position where I have no particular draw to any type of car in this price and power bracket I think they're rotten inside, rotten outside and bang average to drive.

To be perfectly honest though, I love the facelift from the outside, I didn't think it was bad at all on the inside, and as for the comment about the drive, I can't comment really as I haven't driven a wide enough variety of cars, but it has the 2ZZ-GE engine, which is a very good motor. As for the handling characteristics and such, as I say, I can't really comment, but it is obviously better than what I am used to, so it felt great!

That Corolla is one naff looking motor. Acme just save up another few months and get a proper hot hatch like a Mazda 3 MPS or Focus ST225.

I like how they look from the outside (In black particularly!) and the interior of the one I drove was reasonably nice, though I suspect that was partly down to the alacantara upholstery.

I think I secretly love Jap cars, I just haven't "come out"... :p

I do like the MPS, but they cost too much to fuel, too much to insure, too much to tax, and frankly I think they may be too fast for my needs.

The ST225 is a good car too, but I heard horror stories of barrel linings cracking or something, plus they are very thirsty, and I'm not a huge fan of how they look.

Acme, you need something with some practicality don't you? If not go and test drive a 1.8 MX5. They're bags of fun, and enough power for you to enjoy without being enough to get you into any real trouble unless you are being a daft bugger in the wet

Fair enough we all have different tastes. You should try and find a nice private example Corolla that's been someone's pride and joy for years and go try it for a test drive to see what you think second time round as that one you tested sound like a shed.

I do need something with some practicality, and I don't really want an MX5 anyway. :p

This is exactly the reason why I don't make "spec me a car" threads. It is safer to let me do my own thing and pat me on the back. :p

I also like the fact that the Corolla is a little bit unusual, you don't see that many of them, and they have a bit of sleeper status. :)

removed the backseats from the clio and fitted a carpet and rear brace. I rarely if ever need the back seats, but do use the space quite often for hauling stuff around, already done a dump run!. The carpet keeps the noise increase to a minimum, keeps it neat and tidy and the weight saving is welcome.

on the corolla t sport I always preferred the pre-facelift without the skirts and other bits that I never really liked. It just looks a lot less fussy, part of the appeal is that it was an inconspicuous car that didn't draw attention. I had one for a while and I have to say the handling was pretty terrible, I never drove the facelift though. Comparing it to an ep3 stock the corolla got a spanking.

I ended up trying lowering springs which lasted a matter of weeks before binning them in favour of kw v2's which were actually brilliant. Lowering the car had a big effect on the acceleration past 100, presumable because the comically high stock ride height had some terrible effect on the aerodynamics. However lowering mine to the point it would still get over speedbumps, removing the rear seats and removing the hot airblower from inside the front wing, had a remarkable effect on its performance and it was quite a lot quicker, it was quicker than a standard ep3, and a match for one locally that had been modified with a few bits and was of a benchmark for me to measure the car against as I compared it at each stage of modding.

The 2zz is a decent engine although the dip in power just before the high cam kicks in becomes quite tedious pretty fast. I believe that the 2zz in the corolla's have been consistently shown to make better power than in the celica, although no idea why that would be. I had a blitz intake and remus exhaust and it was quite a quick car in the end, pulling well up to the top of 5th and deep into 6th. It was never a great handling car though, traction was poor, gearing was a little odd, you sit too high, i'm sure it could have been good with more work though. The interior wasn't exciting but it was quite nice, and strangely the materials were miles better than those used in the same age celica, good car for long journeys.

Its not much use if you have to mod the crap out of the car though to make It half decent. This was mine.

Having had a few cars in between and now gone back to something similar, small hatchback, similar power output etc in the clio rs, its eye opening the gulf between the corolla and a properly sorted and well rated car, its a shame as the corolla could have been a good car, it had most of the ingredients, Toyota just didn't cook it up all that well.
