What have you done to your car today?

So my dad bought an S1 at the weekend. Quite quick little thing. Looking forward to giving it a drive once I get on the insurance policy. It has four exhausts which is a little OTT but sounds nice.

Washed the wheels on the Puma

Turned out a bit rubbish, found some Wonder Wheels I bought many many years ago back at my parents house and decided to give it a try.

Worked better than I expected! I know it is nasty stuff, wasn't on long and well washed off once done :)

Did my twelfth oil & filter change on my car. Annoyingly, my gearbox oil didn't turn up. Only noticed after arriving at my parents place where I do the work.

Next up, fuel filter.

my car trickled over 50,000 miles today !
my first car to do that !
last car I had I bought it with 55K on the clock, current car I bought at around 46K

Did all the usual fluids on the Jimny, oil, coolant, brakes, and fitted an LED interior light as the current one was like lighting a candle on the dash!

Ordered filters, diff oils and a few other bits to go on. As I'm about to start a big house renovation project it will be kept largely stock for now, however will eventually get quite a few goodies to make it slightly better offroad :)

Also got a few rusty bits to take a look at, and one of the front bleed nipples is ceased so ordered some more :)

I require photos of the Jimmy going over some ridiculous terrain

So far in the 3 days I've owned it it has been taken over some slightly uneven grass, does that count? I think I needed to engage the low range for that :D

In all seriousness it will be going on some offroad adventures, just not quite yet :)

Pulled a bit more of the sticky black tape/gunk from the dash/facia on the VX, also sorted out a short on the head unit, one of the previous owners had just smashed the unit back in to the dash and one of the clips on the cage was bent inside the unit. Least it's working properly now, but not like I can hear it.

Next job is to determine the cause of my boost loss. A quick feel around the solenoid proved the pipes are still attached, was really hoping it was going to be a pipe off.
Going to have to take the intake out up to the turbo and actually check the solenoid to see if it's naffed.

Looks like I've got a slight coolant leak. The level in the expansion tank has dropped from max to min over the course of 4 months and about 4k miles, so not exactly a gaping hole. I walked to the little Ford garage near my work to buy a bottle of coolant so I could top it up and monitor it more closely, and they said "just go get the car and we'll check it out for you and top it up". After they had a bit of a poke around, where couldn't see for sure, they topped it up and put some UV dye in and I'll be taking it back next week at which point any leaks should be visible.

Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious or expensive, but I can't imagine it being too costly. We shall see.

Naturally this was my first suspicion and I had pretty much mentally resigned the car to the scrapyard, but the undertray had damp/staining so that points to it being something a little more.. down to earth :D.

If it's a slow leak, it could be a tiny pinhole in a coolant hose or radiator that only leaks when under high temp/pressure.. Check it for leaks when the engine is hot.

-But be aware of any hot coolant!

Funny looking Continentals.

How are they at VMAX?
LOL VMAX. 2.0TDI means there isn't enough straight road in the world to get to vmax, although I think I had some torque steer when I nailed it yesterday

Really happy with these funny French things, although I need to get the pressures right as they tramline a little.

Mechanic sent me a video of my car running with its new manifolds fitted. They fit properly, don't leak and now it sounds like it should

Sounds wonderful and looks great. I've really enjoyed the series of articles so far on Autocar, will be great once it's all up to speed.

I know you've got a lot of experience with these kind of cars, how's the size and LHD in the UK?

After chopping the back-boxes off, my car was a bit too loud (TBH) so I got a whole bunch of noise complaints to my missus from a neighbour who rents from the same landlord (which is why I had to do something) so I ended up refitting the stock back-boxes last Saturday. You can barely hear it now :(

So today I decided to see if it was still an issue so I used a dB meter to get some readings from her house to the car which is parked 20m away and I'm reading 30dB with the engine off, 51dB with it running, 65dB walking on the gravel to get to my car and 75dB when a car drives past on the road next to her house. If she complains now she'll be told "No".

The car "feels" smoother but that's just a placebo after having it quite loud/vibratey before and in no way makes up for the loss of theatre caused by the new quietness :(

Ah well, at least tomorrow is MRC day so she'll be back up and running at 100% after my trackday woes and, depending on a conversation I plan to have with Doug, there maybe some semi-cheeky plans around xmas
