What Restaurant did you eat at last night?

you've got too much time/money ;)

Make the most of groupon and all the others and it's a reasonably cheap night. This was £78 for 4 of us iirc. Two of us had wine flight at an additional £18 each and service charge was £4 each.

Another lovely meal, 7 course taster. Think the salmon cake and pudding where the two best. Pork was the worst but still lovely, just not enough sauce. Couldn't fault the food other than that one needing more sauce. Waiters on the other hand weren't very professional. Our's thankfully was rather good, she needs promoting, but watching the others they need a talking to. Stood around talking and on phones, and unfortunately the till place is in the middle of the floor. another one had an issue with a table but wasn't able to give more than a 25% discount without manager. That's poor management someone in the place should have authority to do anything.

Celeriac, pancetta & parmesan soup

Pan seared prawns, with sticky rice and I forget the sauce, but Asian style heavy in 5 spice.

Salmon fish cake, mash potato, pickled cucumber and mustard and dill sauce.

Goats cheese pickles beetroot and horseradish cream

Belly pork, black pudding and potato dumplings with apple sauce

Confit lamb shoulder, lamb rump, Dauphinoise potatoes and due.

Baileys and chocolate pot with raspberry gell

went to Hawksmoor 7 dials at weekend, 2nd visit and while it's quite good I don't think it lives up to the hype

may just be a case of me having visited many Vegas steakhouses and in that respect Hawksmoor falls quite a bit short

If you want a cheap good value meal out, don't go to Switzerland. Ever.

Saying that, if you cast aside the fact that it'll cost you a pretty penny, it was very good. I just got back from taking the wife to the Grand Hotel Trois Rois in Basel, or the Cheval Blanc restaurant in there.
2 Michelin Stars and 19 something Swiss award point things.

I thought that the business menu was on, so going for lunch would expensive, but not too bad. Apparently they didn't have it on, only the full taster menu. Oh well!

Food was in fact superb. Really well balanced, flavourful and thought out. Attention to detail was impeccable as well.
Didn't have too much to drink, just Champagne to start, Chablis with my fish and a stunning Barolo with my lamb, followed by a coffee.
With the exchange rate having made CHF to EUR more 1:1, it was damn expensive. 602CHF, with no tip, but in Switzerland they don't tip, so that's something! Really very nice, but for the money I'd go back to Auberge du L'ill in France which was 200 less and 3 stars.
Made my wife's day though, so money can't buy that.

Really? I don't think US steaks have nearly as much flavour as hawksmoor or goodmans!

I suppose it depends on where you try in US, I have only been to Vegas ones and they are miles ahead of Hawksmoor in all respects, will have to try Goodmans some time

Having said that Hawksmoor is as good as amy steak place I have been to in UK, there isn't much competition though

Looks stunning! That's not that bad an amount of money compared to some 2 star restaurants in London, although you did only have a small amount of wine. Was that expensive? (I'll assume the Barolo wasn't cheap).

I thought the steak I had at Goodmans was better than Hawksmoor, but the Tira De Ancho I had at The Bull Steak Expert (Holborn, London) was the best by far.

Basel and Switzerland in general, is damn expensive. Like, really expensive. So everything is over what you'd pay anywhere in the world, but hey. It was my wife's 30th so it was a special occasion and we'd not been there before.

London 2 stars I didn't find too bad, really. I've done a few of them and none were this much lol
The wine was pretty costly; champagne was 28CHF a glass and Barolo 20CHF a glass, but it was really nice. The mark up on wine in Switzerland is mental too, considering how close you are to France. A bottle of Louis was 120CHF, it's 38 in the shops near me.

I've found out as an under 35yr old I can get a special card, which gets you cheap michelin star access around here, so I might well have to do that ha

Price isn't that far off 2* places here tbh, looks superb though

Just wish folks posting tasting menus would put a description with each :p

You local 2 star, would that be Midsummer House? That is at the top of my restaurant wish list.

Yeah. I've been there a couple of times. It's come on a long way since my first visit (only 1* in those days and it felt a bit stuffy in those days), and I'd like to go back again.

Now he's a TV chef etc etc..

Alimentum in Cambridge is very good too (1* and only ~2/3s - 3/4s of the price). Run by an ex protege of Daniel Clifford's; Mark Poynton.

Edit: IIRC Midsummer house only does 7 or 10 course taster menus on most nights now while Alimentum still does an A la carte, and if you go for the early evening sitting early in the week, you can get 3 courses for ~£25/head which is very accessible for a 1* IMO.
