What Restaurant did you eat at last night?

Ah that makes sense. I had in my head you were having the reception then schlepping out to the restaurant. If it's not on the same day as the wedding etc. it might be a bit clearer. But I'd still be careful with the wording :p

Was there last night. Book a while ago and went with another couple. Very intimate place, touching elbows almost with other tables/people etc. Arrived at 7pm for our reservation but table was still in use. Asked if we wanted to wait or go for a quick drink so nipped a few doors down for a swift beer!

Back around 7.20pm and table was ready.

Basically the menu was all the favourite dishes from last year as voted for by dinners - social media votes etc.

Anyway - £25 for 6 courses and the same again for the wine flight.
  • Chips and cheese. Superb - really cheesy with the curry oil at the bottom of the dish and the potato crisps etc - a superb dish for me - great start. (i'd already started eating before I took a picture!!!)

  • Steak Pie - beautiful beef, melt in the mouth, little brioche cubes were lovely and overall a lovely dish.
IMG_20180113_195640.jpg

  • Mac & Cheese - strange as this one the one I was most looking forward to and felt a little let down. The actual mac and cheese was nothing particalarly great, the chicken wing was tiny, the truffle sauce was excellent and powerful but the whole thing just tasted of cauliflower for me. It overpowered the dish.
IMG_20180113_201520.jpg

  • Sea Bream Taco - Again a lovely dish but felt the guacamole could have done with being a little more "chunky" as it was a bit "sloppy" on the plate and the lime and onion salsa lacked a bit of punch. Fish was beautifully cooked and crispy skin.
IMG_20180113_203344.jpg

  • Duck - very tasty overall, blueberry was excellent with the duck, didn't really taste the cocoa but overall a lovely dish
IMG_20180113_205817.jpg

  • White Chocolate - a belter to finish - passionfruit was lovely and punchy and was excellent with the white chocolate.

Wines were very nice with each course - service was very good explaining the courses and wines etc but one of the staff was a bit sullen, Overall a lovely experience - if you didn't take the wine flight £25 for 6 courses is very decent value.

Had Saturday lunch at Chez Bruce as to our surprise, the more local Albert's Table has gone out of business.
Chez Bruce is just down the road. Never exciting, but always consistenly good food (and wine list) :).

Been to a few restaurants since posting here last.
A couple of trips to Paul Ainsworth at No6 in Padsstow; lovely meals and great to meet and chat with Paul.
Restaurant Nathan Outlaw: superb meal - the Porthilly sauce is amazing!, great wine too.
Five Fields in Chelsea again. Fantastic.

On Saturday we went to Dastaan in Ewell, Surrey. A highly recommended Indian restaurant, it didn't disappoint. The prawns and stone bass for starters were beautiful. Lovely freshly made poppdums, the bhaji's were packed with flavour and crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle. Chicken and lamb mains, with generous pieces of meat and lovely sauces were fantastic. The soft freashly made naan bread was as good as I've ever had.
I think it's the best Indian food I've eaten.

We went to L'Enclume last night. Brilliant food and great service.

We started doing Michelin Star places a couple of years ago and so far our scores would be.

Sat Bains / L'Enclume 10/10
Raby Hunt 9.5/10
House of Tides 7/10

I'd recommend the top 3 to anyone, House of Tides was a real disappointment, which is upsetting as we live in Newcastle.

I've had Raby Hunt on my shortlist for a while, I bet it's getting a load of extra bookings since being on Masterchef. Sat Bains and L'Enclume are both great, and in a similar vein I'd also recommend The Ledbury (if you get down to London) and Restaurant Nathan Outlaw (if you get to Cornwall) :).

I have family near Nottingham, hence Sat Bains, otherwise it's quicker to get to London on the train than it is Nottingham!

I'll put those on the list though.

I also like the idea of Tom Kerridge if anybody has tried his place?

Which place, he now has 3 in Marlow? :p

Loved the Hand and Flowers when I ate there about a year ago. Incredible Gins, epic super posh pub grub and a nice non-fancy restaurant atmosphere.

Ate at The Coach the other week and that was equally epic. Turned up and they had a few seats left, stuffed our faces on more incredible small plates and left very happy. The burger was divine, Pigs head dish equally perfect, but the Venison Chilli just won the night.

Popped in for breakfast the next day and destroyed that also. A bargain for a full breakfast and Tom was in there also having breakfast with his family.

Proper legend!

:D I did mean the Hand of Flowers, but burger and Venison Chili does sound good.

Last night we went for a dinner date to Salt Flakes in Twickenham. It took some convincing as it's a new place with French cuisine, but it was worth it. I've had duck ravioli for starters and for the main slow-cooked lamb shank in red wine. It turned out pretty cool. The staff was friendly and that's something I like about restaurants. They pay a lot of attention to food presentation. Really great job. Here's the restaurant if anyone's interested http://www.saltflakeslondon.co.uk

Went to Dishoom in Covent Garden last night for a friends birthday party. I've heard of overrated places before but this took the bucket. Massive queue outside as we approached, luckily we had a reservation and a party of 11 so we got in right away...and were placed on a large table nexto the window. Suffice to say that attempting to eat and having people from outside peering in isn't a nice experience. It was also quite dark inside so difficult to take decent photos.

The food was dire. The starters, Chili Cheese Toast, Gunpowder Potatoes and Lamb Somosas were all tasty. I went for a Chicken Ruby curry as my mains - the gravy was very sweet and the curry had 3 chicken chunks in it (very tender mind). This was washed down by some craft beer by the name of 'Wu Gang Chops the Tree', it took some getting used to!

The rest of the folks weren't too impressed either. Bill came to £438 with a £50 optional service charge. We all left afterwards feeling a tad hungry still.

Dinner at Nopi with the missus (who'd accidently booked us onto a shared table with about 12 other people ... which was interesting way to spend a valentine meal :D)

Had been looking forward to this for a while as the food on Ottolenghis Mediterranean Feasts always looks great

Anyway both food & service were very good - we took a selection of small dishes and shared everything..

Roasted aubergine, saffron yoghurt, walnuts & pomegranates - a really nice subtle dish
IMG_2784.jpg

Truffle polenta chip - we'd tried to make these recently based on one of his recipes - Yotam's were better :D

Seared scallops, pickled daikon, nam prik pao - a yummy dish - loved the combination here

Courgette and manouri fritters, cardamom yoghurt - one of my face dishes from the meal - absolutely delicious

Venison, caramelised yoghurt, peanuts, blackberries - I was really looking forward to this but in the end felt let down - just all seemed a little bland in comparison with the other dishes
IMG_2774.jpg

Pork belly, Delica pumpkin, apple and walnut salsa - another highlight for me was this pork belly - cooked to perfection and the crackling was great
IMG_2787.jpg

Quince tarte with a goats cheese(? was a goats something) ice cream - another absolutely delicious dish - loved the ice cream

I've been back to Peace and Loaf (Dave Coulson) in Newcastle a couple of times in the last few weeks.

It remains my favourite place in Newcastle, streets ahead of the Michelin starred House of Tides.

I had an amazing Guinea fowl main with sous vide egg yolk and their little snacks between courses always hit the spot.

Man, don't say that! My wife is from Newcastle and we keep trying to fit it in when we're there but haven't managed yet! Will have to for sure now.

For me, the only reason it's not got a star is the overall experience, the food is good enough.

It's not bad in anyway, relaxed staff that make you feel welcome, there's just a few tiny details that deny it that top status, e.g. I sat down and the chair was severely wobbly....

Nopi looks amazing. Colleague of my girlfriend's managed to get food poisoning there though :p

I ate at the Savoy with work on Tuesday. Afraid I didn't get any pictures but I had the crab salad to start, then it was 7 times beef welly all round :D Much wine was had, then we all finished with flambéd crepes souzette. Well, we were entertaining some US colleagues... But then they made me pick up the bill :(

Just put it though expenses...
