The wellington at the Savoy is excellent and a surprisingly generous portion too. Yum.
Could have done with some more mushroom pate but it was damn good. I made a point of trying my first ever gin martini there too. When in Rome* :p

*I also made us all get a black cab there, obvs :D

Haven't been to a restaurant in, can't remember. Love our local "Noodle Camp". It's less like Wagamamas - the MacDonalds of Noodles (rushed service and skimpy on portions). It's very 'home-made' but with a great professional twist and big portions. The best thing is that the whole family can enjoy and we all clear our plates - NOT leaving hungry is the best sign for me. Wishing I could eat there more often but at present we go out for birthdays and really big celebrations - makes it a special time for us.

Now I'm feeling hungry!

Not quite last night but Saturday night we visited Wild Shropshire for the 1st time.

https://www.jamesinaspace.com/

A large booking had re-scheduled at short notice, so it was 25% off (£30 instead of £40).

Great atmosphere, informal but still excellent service. James visits each table before you eat for a chat about the tonight. You actually get the menu once you've finished eating. That might sound a bit pretentious , but it means you completely park your preconceptions of "I like this, I don't like that" and dive into each course trying to figure out exactly what it is. I think it was 7 or 8 courses - every plate went back empty. We got some of the ingredients right but completely missed others. James comes back round again at the end for another chat, so you can ask questions about the menu.

I really like a surprise menu. I ate at The Pass a couple of times when Matt Gillan was head chef and they did a surprise menu. It was less of a surprise in that you knew the headline ingredient for each course. I like the sound of your place though, I shall have to book.

We'll certainly be going again. I think there were 16 covers total that night, with one sitting at 7pm. Small but well chosen selection of drinks.

I ate at Wild Shropshire last month, really liked the offer of not seeing the menu until later and like you guessed a few things but not a hope on a couple of them. Really really good meal and nice to chat to James afterwards. Even at £40 I think its great value.

Here's a few pictures i took from Manchester House on Saturday. It was the first Taster menu i've had so was expecting to end up eating a lot of things i've never had before (Quail, Langostine and Oyster as the main parts, sweetbread and a few other things as accompanying sides)

My wife is always apprehensive of what she refers to as "*****" foods and isn't always brilliant at trying new things if she deems them disgusting. However she really enjoyed most of the dishes. The chefs were also brilliant in catering to a few of her intolerance's to the point she got a separate dish if they felt that removing some elements would compromise the main dish.

Because i'm rubbish, i didn't take photos of everything. I have also forgotten most of the wines that i had. Although the Charles Heidsieck 2006 vintage was amazing. It's a long time since i've had a champagne of that quality.

Menu
sgWwTYC.png

Millionaires Sandwich - This was a pistachio sponge with fois gras and some kind of jelly. Delicious, the sweet and saltiness of the pistachio and then you got the fois gras flavour coming through afterwards.

vcWtEUK.png

Fried Salmon Skin with Caviar and wasabi - This was probably both of our least favourite dishes, although speaking to the waitress it's one that definately divides opinions. It had a very fishy smell and i've never been a fan of the taste of wasabi

yVLtewZ.png

Raw Beef with habanero and egg yolk - This was lovely. A huge flavour to it all which helped move the lingering taste of the wasabi from the previous course. Oddly this was paired with a white wine, however it worked brilliantly.

mIZ7qW1.png

King Crab in black ravioli - This was my wifes favourites (and she was nervous about it when it arrived). It had such Thai flavours and was lovely

bT4Z5qq.png

Quail - This was probably my favourite, there were lovely spicy indian flavours coating the quail and the mango was lovely and spicy too. My wife didn't get the yoghurt part and i think that helped balance the spice for me so she missed out a little there.

5in3hdp.png

Missing Photo - Langoustine - This was joint favourite for me. The langoustine was topped in a sweet jelly which worked brilliantly with it. Neither of us could place the flavour so we asked what it was. Turned out it was Cauliflower jelly. Both my wife and i hate cauliflower (the langoustine was served on some and we just about ate it) but in jelly form it was deliciously swet. No idea how they managed that!

Oyster - This was breadcrumbed and served with a smoked potato cream. My wife for a tomato dish for this and i think she missed out. Was amusing looking around at this point as it was clear lots of other people were unsure about oysters.

5in3hdp.png

Missing Photo - Lamb (Wife had the halibut), both options were excellent. The lamb was served 2 ways. I thought she said there was both loin and fillet which i had always assumed were the same thing. Perhaps i misheard.

"Refresher" - This was amazing and tasted exactly like a refreshed sweet.

Deserts. This is pretty much where i forgot to take photos.

The Plum dish was lovely and came with vimto tasting ice cream and sugary shards. The passionfruit was arguably the most tarte thing i've ever tasted. Delicious in it's own way.

We didn't go for the cheese as my wife has lactose intolerances and i couldn't handle it myself!

Overall we both really enjoyed it. Was a very relaxed atmosphere which i think helped my wife enjoy it, as she'd expected it to be quite posh and formal.

She's shot herself in the foot now though because i'd always avoided taster menus because of worrying how she'd be trying new things but think i can drag her along to a few now!

We've been eyeing up "Where the Light Gets In" which sounds amazing. Anyone been?

On Saturday night my other half and I went to Ynyshir in Wales. It was all booked last minute, we decided we wanted to go out somewhere for dinner but didn't want to go to London. I'd looked at Ynyshir in the past and liked the look of the menu so we called and got the last table. It's a small restaurant with only 5 tables. The M6 was rubbish so it took us about 4.5 hours to get there.

This may be one of my favourite restaurants now, we both utterly loved it. The food was faultless and service was excellent, very relaxed.

I didn't take photos of the food, only of the menu. There were 2 options, we went for the slightly more expensive menu as there was 252 day aged Wagyu beef on it.

PUgYvQ9.jpg

Some of the courses were served in 2 steps - the duck, wagyu and pollock. My absolute favourite was the first part of the wagyu beef which was a small burger with confit shallot and sourdough mayonnaise. Bread no.2 was a stand out too, it was their slow proof (7 days I think) sour dough in a broth. Delicious.

Definitely one we will go back to.

The wagyu was absolutely amazing, the burger was one of the best things I've ever had. Such a rich beefy flavour and indeed very different to other beef.

I couldn't fault the food, the menu was superb.

Not last night but today at lunch. Was in Haywards Heath with the missus and boy. Walked around decided we'd have lunch in cafe rouge. Worst decision ever.

I ordered a tuna nicoise salad and my missus asked if she could have a mushroom croque without the goats cheese.

So they both arrive at the table. I start on mine and she starts on hers, within 10 seconds I've realised my tuna is still raw and in some parts frozen. So I've complained to the staff, they took it away without even an apology.

Whilst this is happening my missus has discovered her croque is loaded with goats cheese despite the waiter saying they would do one without. So she had very little to eat now.

My tuna nicoise finally reappears except now the same fillet has been reused and now its completely overcooked, dry and the rest of the salad has gone to mush. Still no apology for the mess it was in.

I know cafe rouge isn't much better than the other restaurant chains but expected better of their food.

I've left a tweet on their page earlier about the abysmal food but no reply as yet. Never going there again.

I'm assuming you got up and left without paying, and ate somewhere else?

For me, dinner at Noize in Fitzrovia. It opened towards the end of last year by the former co-owner of Pied a Terre (which is round the corner) and has had plenty of good press. Rustic French cuisine with a really good wine list, definately worth a visit.
