Whats Your BMI?

BMI is rubbish, anyone that does a modicum of exercise will tip it over, muscle is denser than fat, furthermore the more muscle you carry the denser your bone structure becomes.

According to that I'm touching on obese which is rubbish as my bodyfat % is 12-13%.

For someone weighing 100 kg who is 185 cm tall (15st 10lbs, 6'1"):

You have a Body Mass Index of 29.21 .
This means that you fall into the overweight range.

I'm aiming for 105kg (16st 6lbs) which will tip me to obese!!!!!!! Can't wait! :D

My BMI is currently 20.96, not like anyone cares.

BMI is a good indicator for 'normal' people who aren't professional athletes or body builders [which is most people, let's face it]. And your post comes across as written by someone who's unhappy with their weight and is thrusting blame in any direction apart from towards themself.

mostly, the majority of the population the scale is aimed at, are fairly accurately classified via their BMI. The amount of people who go to a gym and do anything other than curls or a bit of cardio and eat right is stupidly low. IE most people who go to the gym aren't gaining anything from it, and the majority don't go to the gym anyway.

It specifically states its not aimed at athlete's yet he states as a reason its no good that rugby players are all obese, mostly they are athletes, and lots are what you'd call fat, maybe not obese.

But thats mostly because people think thin/fat has any bearing on if you are fit/unfit, completely different things. How do I know, i'm unfit, I was unfit with a BMI of 39, and I'm unfit with a bmi of 30, i've lost a crapload of weight without an iota of exercise, mostly because I can't. I'm hoping when I get low enough in weight that my knee's won't be quite as bad and I can work on fitness aswell.

Fitness is more important to your health than weight tbh, though you're better off a healthy weight an fit, than unhealthy weight and fit.

You see marathon runners who are 22 stone rugby players who run decent times, and incredibly "healthy" looking people with a perfect BMI who couldn't run to the end of the street without passing out.

If you aren't lifting weights with the intention of bulking AND eating right, and are between probably 18-60 then the chances are BMI has you described pretty accurately.

You have a Body Mass Index of: "STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALES WITH YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD!"

So far I win this thread.....in a bad way. Go me :(

I was wondering about that. I was going to enter Schwarzenegger's height and weight from when he won Mr Olympia but couldn't find the stats quickly. I have a sneaking feeling that it'll say he was obese too.

There are 3 types of people for whom BMI doesn't work:

a) Atheletes
b) People who work out properly
c) Deluded people trying to convince themselves they are not fat

This thread appears to contain all 3 types.

Height: 6'4" (192cm)
Weight: ~12stone 4lbs (~78kg)

Which apparantly gives me a BMI of around 21, pretty well in the normal range but I don't read too much into that. Feeling healthy is a whole lot more important to me than what a simple statistical tool says.

You're in a comic mood today. First time I've laughed at reading two consecutive posts.

I feel a bit like FF I can't wait until I'm in the Obese catogry :D

I'm hovering at about 25 which is the borderline for overweight And when I hit about 30 which is the borderline for obese I'll be approximatley my idea weight..
I remember a couple of years ago when my BMI use to be about 18.5 :D

According to the BBC,

Height - 5 - 10
Weight - 16st-10
BMI - 33.63

Yes, I know, obese! I am quite wide and have heavy bones. On the otherhand, I do eat loads of rubbish food and I am pretty fat!

hehe, I think I "was" the highest in this thread, 6 months ago at least. Ketosis ;)

Get going, I've tried to lose weight before but, depression, lack of exercising and eating better but not right I never got that far before I ended up gaining again. I finally decided, if I don't do it now, I'll just end up fat all my life and decided, screw that. Its been far easier than I thought mostly because when you eat right, you lose your hunger, making it even easier. WHen i started it was 4-5 days to get into ketosis, 4-5 days to lose all temporary side effects(which weren't bad and easily beatable) and another few days before I just didn't feel hungry anymore.

A diet where the hardest thing to do is eat, because you don't feel hungry, is a damn easy, and in this case very healthy diet. win, win , win.

It's true though. I just don't understand why someone would rather kid themselves about their weight, than say to themselves "ok, you've got a little porky, i'll stop the crap food and get my arse to the gym for a while".

I recognise that i've put on weight over christmas, like i do every year, but as soon as christmas is over i always become active again and lose it all.

I personally didn't laugh at it, it was just a statement of fact.

Love the attitude there FF :D
Shame we can't all adopt it tbh :p

I aim to please! :D

Well as Fox pointed out, I'm not really in the catchment area that the BMI is aimed at ;)

Still, it's fun chucking a few stats around. However that extra 5kg will take a year or so doing it slowly but steady keeping the bodyfat low I don't do the whole bulking thing. Besides I need to keep my speed up for my rugby. :)

For someone weighing 70 kg who is 182 cm tall:

You have a Body Mass Index of 21.13 . This means that you fall into the normal range.

yay?

Should really weigh myself proper then try,

had a quick guess and got 32.5 somethin, so went out n ate some pie :)

For someone weighing 54kg who is 177cm tall: You have a body mass index of 17.23. This means you fall into the underweight range.

Doesn't really bother me, I eat plenty of good, healthy food (and a nice amount of chocolate!) and hit the gym 3 times a week. I think I'm perfectly healthy :)
