Which car would you chose?

I'm not saying that an M5 will be a disappointment coming from a 530i/d but I feel that you should save the E39 event for when it'll be REALLY special and really amazing. You've already got access to an 530d - and as you said, you enjoy driving it but is that really what you want?

When you come to an M5 - do you want to think "Looks the same as my old car, just goes a bit faster" (ok prehaps a bit of an exaggeration but you get my point) or do you want to think "wow this is amazing I love this car, the looks, the performance, the interior".

They aren't that bad.. just sell your parent's car.. you parent's house.. and err.. your parent's... you know you want to ;)

Don't get a 3 series. They're common as muck these days.

Personally, I'd go for the Scoobie. You're only young once, and you might as well take the exciting option whilst you can still handle it.

Remember - decide at the age of 40 that you want something similar to a Scoobie and people will start accusing you of mid-life crisis-ness. Get it out of your system!

Around here, the only people who own 3 series' are drug dealers and pretentious hairdresser women trying to make out they have more money than they really do. And that accounts for a whole lot of 3 series'...

edit: Bums! You said 5 series...

Errr, they're far too executive for you at the moment. Live a little.

e39/e46 SE's are common as muck. e39/e46 facelift Sport's are not, and look stunning. Hopefully by the age of 40 we'll all be able to have proper mid-life crises and buy 911s/M5s.

Just because we're young shouldn't mean we're limited to Scoob's and the like. I'm 22 and would never touch one. Yes I can see the appeal - my mate's just bought an Evo 6, and it goes like stink. Another mate bought a new Impreza STI WRX last year, and that went like stink too. However, that's all the cars have going for them.

I want a lot more in a car - firstly I don't want a car that has a shocking reliability record or that will cost the earth to keep on the road. Secondly, it would have to be fast. Thirdly it must have a comfy and nice interior, with lots of toys and a modern feel. Fourthly it must be quick and must handle well. Fifthly it must look awesome; and lastly, it must have a quality feel.

An e39 530i Sport would have all of these attributes, an early Scoob would not.

Option 4 Impreza.

Try and get a test drive in one. If you dont feel the need for speed then rule it off your list.

I fail to see how that's relevant or any of your business?

Some students work damn ouside of Uni time to earn some cash. Others, such as myself, take a year out to work (usually as part of their degree program) and get some cash this way.

If it matters my net spend on car purchases (minus sales) since I've been at Uni is around £8k. Is that a problem as well?
I havnt got a problem with it at all, Jesus.

Im just wondering if it is a one off gap year, hows he guna be able to afford a house and the car when the want to move out comes along, which will be very soon after degree + job.

Assuming he even gets a decent job after he gets his degree, i assume this cause iv met the guy and cant see him ballsing up. Even still, is buying and running a car not moving out for however long it will delay moving out? How long will it delay moving out, if it will at all? etc etc etc

I didnt say it was any of my business, nor did i expect to find out, i just said to answer the question more effectively id need to know somthing about it, and therefor didnt really give an opinion.

If he is a drug dealer and is buying the car in the same ray of light, then id say BMW or ST220, more inconspicuous. Iv not got any problem with students owning cars, let alone expensive ones, i mean, i get grief for owning what is essentially a chavved up w plate fiesta in most peoples eyes, and im a student.

Buy the bimmer, take up drug dealing and hog that outside lane. You know you want to, nowt else comes close to it for what you want i think.
ST200 seems a bit pointless, ST220 is nice but not better than the beemer and is more, and i think you will grow to hate the scooby after your initial grin has gone.

Firstly I'm not a drug dealer. Secondly whilst I'm not going to go into my detailed financial circumstances on an internet forum, I will say that moving out is not a priority at this point in my life. When it is, I'll sell whatever car I've got, and start sorting that out. At the moment, I wish to enjoy myself and spend the fruits of my labour on a nice car :)

Damn right, there's no point in moving out for the sake of it. I'm 22 and happy living at home. My parents don't care and I'm able to enjoy life and buy exactly what I want (car included). I've got saved enough for a house deposit too. I'm not going to flitter away cash renting a 1 bed flat for a little more independence.

Living with parents is clearly not an option for everyone, but when it is, what's wrong with taking it?

Im not talking about renting, that really is a silly thing to do if your happy at home.

Saddling yourself with a mortgage and a house to live in on your own sounds about as appealing as buying a brand new Corsa SXi :p

Moving out and buying a house is the sort of thing you do with a nice girl.

Sure you don't want to buy one of them instead? The girl i mean, much more fun than a house....

You can do it with blokes too you know.

One day your prioritys will change overnight though. You start thinking sensibly

My point exactly - but the options for me are buy a 1 bed flat with a humongous mortgage, live like a poor student, and drive a car I hate, or stay at home, buy what I want and drive the car of my dreams.

I agree
Personally I would go with the ST220, the long term running costs will be lower too, servicing will be less and god forbid if anything goes wrong on the bmw you will be screwed.

Out of those 4, I'd choose the BMW... In your situation personally, i'd be looking towards something with even more luxury and presence, but thats just me :)
