This picture decides it for me
Well, it's not quite as simple as that though, is it. If the PS4 runs hot and becomes unreliable (or automatically throttled down, which is more likely), that extra headroom will be wasted.

I'm no fan of the modern Microsoft corporate machine, and lean heavily towards Sony at the moment, but the first few months will be very interesting as the dust settles and real, rather than theoretical, differences materialise.

It's not theoretical those are the specs.

I don't think Sony who are known for making great hardware would risk there systems becoming too hot and possibly having to replace all that they sell. In all the years of its development you think they would push the PS4 out and say "oooohh we forgot to test the temps on that thing".

The PS4 throttling down? Now your clutching at straws; there is no way this would be allowed to happen as it would affect the game experience the developers intended.

Specs correlate to results but they don't guarantee them. All I'm saying is that without knowing how efficient the hardware *and* OSes are in converting code into pixels the raw specs are pretty meaningless.

As for throttling... I'll be very surprised if there's no fail-safe mode in these systems to keep temperatures down. They are, after all, fancy laptops without a screen.

Anyway, I have a PS4 on pre-order, but I'm trying to keep my expectations sensible.

After playing the GT6 demo - I'm positively swaying towards the Xbone + Forza.

Will wait till I sample Forza 5 before I buy the One.

They're not laptops, they're games consoles. No doubt there'll be thermal protection built in, but it'd more than likely result in a warning message/shut-down, not throttling. It has a fan inside, and if it's anything like the PS3's cooling system, it'll ramp up as much as it needs to in order to keep the hardware running within acceptable tolerances. High temps will mean more noise, not slower games.

Lol. They wouldn't release a console that throttles down constantly.

The PS4 pad fixes a lot of these issues that the DS3 had. But the sticks are still in a stupid place ;)

This is the main reason I'm finally leaning towards the Sony hardware. I liked the console (ps3) but the controllers were not as ergonomic as the xbox's.

If the ps4 addresses the issues then I might become a believer...

Nobody intentionally releases buggy anything, but you can guarantee there will be bugs and I'll eat my hat if this laptop style SOC architecture doesn't have laptop-like abilities to throttle down, or dump cores, to keep cool under duress (I never said constantly).

We'll see though. All this is in response, remember, to the idea that the raw PS4 specs are vastly superior to the 180's. All I'm saying is that raw specs don't translate directly into raw performance. They imply, not guarantee.

But whether people agree with me or not, it's going to be a very interesting year ahead finding out. I'm sure both systems will be great. Eventually.

You seem confused in thinking that those scenarios where it needs to throttle down arent at the extremes, while in normal usage it will never require such measures to be taken realistically. None of my PC equipment has ever had to throttle because it so rarely goes out of standard operating window. Why would a console need to deal with this differently

Its laughable to think that while playing a game you foresee a console shutting down cores etc in normal service and that the result might mean that whatever performance difference is, will be quashed.

Its quite a conclusion youve made

ps3ud0

What the hell are you on about??? It's a bloody console not a laptop, throttling down or dumping cores in a console environments makes absolute no sense.

It's a pretty much certain both consoles this gen will not suffer from heat issues, given its essentially an already cool 7870 underclocked a signicant amount decreasing power draw and temps even lower on a 28nm procces. Along with a tiny low power CPU, again at a lower frequency, coupled with a custom cooling setup. The XBox will be even cooler than above given its huge heatsink.

The last couple years I've been more and more disappointed with Sony, and I used to be a huge fanboy although I have owned both Xbox and Xbox 360 but I always had more fun with PC and PS, I think a lot of this has to do with the controller, I really hated the left analogue stick being swapped with the poorly working D-pad.

Basically after ditching my 360 (I'd bought that before my PS3) my mind was already made up not to go back to their line of consoles unless they came out with something amazing.

Wasn't too impressed by the Sony conference, although I'm happy that they finally seem to be pushing remote-play, was disappointing that I could never use it with PS3 because none of the titles I wanted to use it with were supported. And I'm annoyed with PS+, it's a great deal getting all those games for £30-40/year but forcing people to pay an irrelevant third party to use their own internet connection is wrong.

I did watch the Microsoft conference too, it was a good laugh. Their reversals though don't change my mind about them.

So I'm sitting on the fence, but I will most likely get a PS4, main reasons being it's what most of my friends will be on and I don't really like having a PC as the main entertainment system of the living room, tried it out and prefer PC at a desk with a relatively smaller screen.

Still ps4 like before. Basically the people suddenly changing their minds and going with xbone were always going to and were just having a silly hissy fit, time to pick your toys up.

Agreed, they were just jumping on the bandwagon

What?

I don't you think you understand what mods are and what console gaming is massively missing out on with games like GTA IV and Skyrim.

He's not talking about those type of mods. He's talking about the people wanting to mod consoles to play pirated copies. Same term, very different meanings!

But he was replying to someone saying that a reason they couldn't give up PC gaming was due to all the mods you can get for games. So I'm guessing he just got confused...

Still, you can pirate games on the consoles anyway and I'm sure you will be able to on the next-gen ones. It always happens unfortunately.
