If I were to use your logic, the IMF and World Bank would be disbanded overnight and development projects in the 'third world' would cease.

Sure, you may think then "why us", but the fact remains - someone has to start, and quite frankly when it's all said and done, it's something to be very proud of. You don't achieve progress through filling your moat and pulling up your drawbridge - you achieve it through lighting that damn torch and walking into the dark.
Seriously DD, you need to start tearing down those stupid walls you've built up and look around you. Sure, there's things wrong, but don't instantly justify your divisions, instead remember the fact that we are all the bloody same, and take it from there. Building up walls has never solved anything - it only prolongs the issue.

This is just one small thing which the EU do. Charities are only able to develop at a grassroot level effectively - you ideally need a supranational organisation such as the EU to address things at the larger scale. Local governments can happily turn around and refuse to develop certain regions as they're deemed too expensive whereas the EU have much more sums to draw upon. There are underdeveloped places in Britain simply because the government see it as uneconomical to redevelop the area and lose the populist vote in the process. The EU doesn't necessarily suffer from this consequence.
Throwing money at Ireland actually helped them to boom almost over night into a very strong economy who also happen to be our close neighbour. We do benefit economically - it was money very well spent. That aside, it will also help address cultural tensions between our nations. Interesting how the IRA disappeared as things started to change for the better, isn't it?
Throwing money at our infrastructure will not necessarily help in the same way it helped Ireland. As long as we have this cultural quagmire and black-hole, we are effectively a massive drain.

Money is nothing but a means to an ends, you should learn to care about it less.

To be fair, though, they don't really 'exist'. I think in political circles they're seen as a bit of a joke (which is why the big three don't pay much attention to them). Mostly they're just ignored. They'll never get anywhere.

The EU on an individual basis is not equivalent to taking half of your earnings at any given point. You seem to think that the money would suddenly find its way back into your pocket or it would miraclously improve this island. I call that naivity.
You're wrong. Comparably, the money which finds its way to the EU is pittance. It'd be more apt me giving you 50p and you spending it.
Oh, and for comparison, the Emirates Stadium - one building - was £430m.

Haha, I was just thinking the same thing. There's a hilarious thread about whether or not it's ok to do "non-white martial arts", and some people are saying no, and others saying protecting themselves will be important for the future...
