Who can be an English football role model?

paul robinson. as far as i know he's not done anything dodgy, other than fall foul to a cruel back pass incindent. this knocked his confindence, he was (still is) a competent keeper with a very good attitude. i can't blame him for knocking back capello. i remember when united put 4 past him and the chants of ''englands number one'' started from them. i'd have felt sorry for any keeper in that position but for it to happen to robinson was doubley hard. nice, decent, down to earth bloke who just wants to play.

This is a big reason why I just haven't found it in me to support England's football escapades over the years. Why and how can I when the team is full of utter scum bags? Cheating on their wives, crashing cars, hitting women, 'forgetting' a drugs' test, being David James etc. etc., are all serious issues. Not only that, but the very top level of English players are largely arrogant tossers, I fully understand it being part of the reason why for so many years Wenger avoided them.

Big lol's!

Agreed on Owen, I think we've found a role model :D

Agreed there, shame he turned a bit s*** due to injury as his career went on.
Seems to have a brain on him too, made quite a lot of money outside football too for himself.

It's just a matter of time before some kind of sex cheat scandal comes out about Adam Johnson. I can tell. The lad's clearly a wrong 'un.

Apart from being a mercenary of course...
Wait, so it's ok if Bullard holds a club to ransom over money, but not when Barry does it?

Just for ***** and giggles! I hope it involves Richards ! haha Them two ! Who would have guessed :o

Shame David James wont feature for england anymore as he is a good role model i reckon...promoting/saving the environment..seems a nice person in interviews etc and very experienced internationally and domestically.

He - allegedly - is one of the other players recently granted a super injunction. You sure can pick 'em.

No votes for Gerrard? As far as I can recall the only scandal he was involved in was the fight outside the nightclub for which he was found not guilty. Local boy made good, generally a top bloke (remember when he hit the kid with his car and went to visit him in hospital?) and one of the more hard-working members of the England squad.

His mate hit a guy, who raised his arms to fend off blows, and Gerard's defence (which worked) was that he thought the guys was going to hit him so he Gerard hit first.

Legally you can still claim self defence if someone is aggressive towards you and you hit them pre-emptively.

Not defending captain fantastic, just saying. :D

To answer the original question - I don't think you will ever have much luck looking to footballers for role models. It's not like they actually do anything to benefit society- they just kick a ball around which is enjoyable to watch.

The sad truth is that nearly all footballers are spoiled brats who will sleep with any hot girl regardless of whether they already have a wife/girlfriend. There are some exceptions but they are few and far between.

Yep, that's because they are the same as the rest of us. They just get far far more offers and eventually give up resisting. They are stupid thinking they can get away with it, like they could if they were a nobody.

I can't believe how thick Rooney was getting married, he will now be supporting her family forever. The only reason the family didn't care about his last whore was if coleen had walked the rest of the family was getting nothing.

not like captain marvel (beckham) he was great, and a managed to drag the team through some rough matches almost single handedly.

Oh god why do people get caught up on that one game against greece. Beckham dragged england through a grand total of 1 game. Most games after Greece he was as non existent as the rest of them. He was awesome in that game and never got to within half as good ever again. He lived off that game almost as long as John Barnes lived off that goal against Brazil and Owen the goal against the Argies.

Beckham didn't have enough about him to be England Captain, he rarely said anything, he just frowned a bit.

Is he a good role model. Well he got caught cheating once and away with it a few more times I'm sure, but he was a young man away from home and thick enough to think he wouldn't get caught as one of the biggest stars on the planet. To be fair most kids that have or idolise him probably don't even know or care about that stuff.

Tosh. Ecuador/Argentina/Germany (setup 3 of the six goals)/Greece - that's just off the top of my head.

I'd rather have 11 Beckham's in my England team than most of the current crop of *****.

Gave it some thought, and the last person I can really think of with enough fame / time in the lime light and the right image is probably Gary Lineker?

Yes, but one of the more guilty ones who misses a lot of England games during the domestic season (don't blame him personally). He's a heavy simulator as well, so for that on the pitch alone you can't really count him.

In terms of the nightclub incident, well, to be honest, Liverpool's golden boy was never really going to be punished in Liverpool was he now? ;)

Also don't forget that his marriage is a joke as well.

So no, by a long way Gerrard really isn't a role model.

no way , there were very few occasions when beckham did not perform or did not come through for the team, be it with a crucial assist or free kick goal.

id take him over many of our current crop any day of the week.
