In a very similar vein, if the front end of the car is jacked up so that both wheels are off the floor and you start the engine in neutral, the front wheels will start to spin slowly. If you then put your hand on the wheel to stop it, you get the same thing where the revs bob up and down. I think it's related.
The other thing though is that there is no harm in keeping the throttle body and filter as clean as possible, it definitely helps the revs be smoother at idle. I do my throttle body about once a year and get it as clean as I possibly can with carb cleaner. As for the filter, I have a pipercross sponge filter so I use a pipercross filter cleaning kit.
