Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Hmm, think you need to take the unreliable commnets with a pinch of salt, I owned my 172 Cup for 4 years and had the following go...

Starter motor
Battary
2x Springs
Exhaust Rusted off
Release bearing

Nothing that any other car of 8 years of age would need. The thing that made me get rid of mine apart from wanting something faster was how they're prone to leaks.

In terms of 'bang for buck' there isn't anything that comes close in the area of the market.

They are unreliable, but they are cheap.

Don't really agree, from my personal experience and that of the many other people I know with them, but if that's someone's opinion then fair play.

Mine was running amazingly well sat on 106k on the clock I think when I sold up, saw a vid of it on an RR the other day on Cliosport and it made 172bhp on the nose which was nice.

It never missed a beat and never let me down, things I had go whilst I had it were a snapped spring and a window regulator.

But mine was a superior phase 1 so maybe that's it :p That why you're wanting a px for a phase 1, you know it makes sense.

So have you had the box swapped on yours?

I've done almost 10k miles in mine since febuary, and no problems as of yet, touch wood. Gearbox is fine in mine dispite being driving very hard. My exhaust was rusted quite badly, but it was a known common fault, they are made of cheese, and I replaced it with a full stainless steel system which I was gonna do anyway. The cup suspension was in mint condition when I took it off and put coilovers on, so no issue with leaking shocks/broken springs either. The car also has no rust, and the engine made a very healthy 177bhp. Certainly no reliability issues here. These sort of cars get driven hard, any "reliability issues" that people get would happen on any car with this performance IMO.

Did 18k in mine stuff that needed to be replaced or fixed was brake pads and disks, which are usual, the aux belt because is started squeeking, and a rear shock that started leaking.

Perfectly acceptable.

There is no doubt you get good ones, most of the issues with mine have been minor build quality issues rather than all out reliability issues.

I'd like a ph1 because I don't see the sense in having a more expensive version of the same car that is just being used as a toy. Mine gets treated the way it drives suggests it should. It's not something I'm actively seeking out mind, but it'd allow me to keep a clio and get my van painted without spending a penny.

Gearbox will be done when I return from my holiday.

Would be interested on someone's opinion on how a phase 1 drives compared to a 2/182 and if there's much difference.

I haven't had a good enough go in a 182 to really have an opinion on it.

The Phase 1 drivers will all say the Phase 1 is better, the Phase 2 drivers will say the phase 2 is better. Neither have ever made a compelling enough argument to me to make me think they are anything other than pretty much the same.

The interior of the Phase 2 is nicer though.

The only opinion I've ever seen is that the Ph1 seems to feel a bit more rough and ready, which I do find a little hard to believe as the Ph2 hardly feels refined or anything.

If I ever meet any of you you're more than welcome to try my phase 1 and make your own mind up.

Mine will feel rough and ready though seen as its a dashboard with two seats inside :)

I think your just too used to a bit of comfort. I don't find the 182FF that bad at all.

I've had a lot of cars, most of which have been hot hatches/coupés, and the Clio is easily the least comfortable since my MK3 Golf which was lowered 60mm on cheap Raceland suspension and had shot bushes everywhere.

I've learnt to live with it, and seeing as my daily drive will be a Ford Transit in the not too distant future, the drive of the Clio will become even more acceptable.

Seems a bit odd, its hard yeah but mine doesn't feel too crashy or anything.

Even considering uprating the bushes, and Eibach springs.

My 2002 mk2 Clio 172 seems to of developed a farting type noise from the passenger side when first moving off after being parked, whether it's for 30 mins or first thing in the morning. This is either in reverse or forwards and does not happen druring the course of the journey.

I've got absolutely no idea what it could be, any suggestions to try and find this problem?

Cheers...

Exhaust somewhere? Sounds like it sorting itself when it heats up.

Coming from a wheel? I had a fart noise from mine when the rear caliper had seized.

Or as Begbie said, I have a vibration from my exhaust that only there when cold.

Don't know about anyone else, but my clio doesn't like being cold. Sounds much nicer, goes much better when nice and warm.

How many others in here need a remap? Could organise a group buy of a single RS tuner and an unlock code each, then flog it on?

Like most cars then? :p

My 182 sounds like a rally car when cold and runs like a sack of **** :p after a couple minutes its fine though. It needs a remap hard though

Everything is very stiff intially.

When it's been running for a while on hot days or sat in stationary traffic mine can sound a little like a tractor
