Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Can any Megane owners tell me about the 225 5 doors?

Looking at getting one (5 doors would be better for us than 3) and I've spotted one I quite like the look of.

It's a LUX so has the keyless entry etc. Are they just missing the Recaros, LSD and 5bhp over the R26? It's a 2008 so assume this is the 'Phase 2'?

Went to look at said car yesterday. Walked away for a couple of reasons :

1. Rear lower quarters (where they meet the doors) had the stone chip protector things on. For some reason these had been painted over and the paint was bridging the gap between the protector and the bodywork, they were on their way to looking really tatty and would have needed work in 6 months or so.

2. Engine misfire. Don't think it was serious, likely to be a coil pack or spark plug, but it was enough to put me off.

So, i'm back to looking at them again and considering F1. For the right F1 i would be happy to pay the cash. Would the region of £6k be reasonable for a tidy example with around (or less than) 80k miles?

Aside from the obvious eBay/AT/PH is there anywhere else to look? meganesport.net looks a bit... stale.

Make sure you get an R26 F1 not an F1 Team (no LSD)
Your budget should get you a good one, mine cost £5000 last August with 60k miles on it, full history, and favorable modifications.

Mine was advertised on Pistonheads. There was a steady stream popped up on Gumtree but all seemed quite ropey. Owners clubs are worth checking but find them very stale/slow compared to other car forums I've been on

Thanks for the info @dale1uk - it's typical that when I wasn't looking there was lots of tidy ones for sale. Many, many tatty ones now.

How can you tell the difference between the R26 F1 and F1 Team?

/Edit - ah - is the F1 Team the 225?

Check the windows work, window regulators have a habit of failing stopping the windows from working. Check service history make sure belts were done by Renault or a specialist.

Not that I want to jump to conclusions, but the trader selling that LY one takes lovely pictures outside a very nice apartment building, when you Google maps his registered address/location, it pops up a couple of miles away in the middle of a council estate.

I looked at the black one (online) but a few small bits put me off. I'm looking daily at the moment so have a good idea of the F1's currently for sale - some are not very inspiring at all.

@Phil W Was the LUX you looked at the 4k blue one with a private plate on Autotrader, not sure where you're based so could be way off.

That's a good idea, never thought of doing that.

Curious what puts you off, for me I just don't like the R26 decals on the bumpers so far from looking at the photos.

Yeah it was. The seller was nice enough, a trader that had kept the car for personal use. Overall very tidy but as mentioned, there was a misfire and the painted lower rear quarters bothered me. Oh, the rear electric windows didn't work either.

I've just come from a black car. They always photograph well but in the flesh are always a disappointment. Lottle things also put me off such as the decals (trivial I know) and the wierd camera thing at the base of the rear numberplate.

Many people still here with 182's?

I had one previously when they were 5 years old and absolutely loved it. Got a hankering for one again as I need a car to do 1-2k miles a year, but thinking this could work two fold.
Buy a 'minter' look after it and hold onto it as a 'future classic' or turn it into a track day car next year.

How are they holding up? Seems £2k gets you a good one. (I did have a 197 too but wasn't a fan, it just didn't feel as raw)

Is it the black one I linked? Still in two minds whether to go take a look or not.

Had a 172 a few years back and it's still the second best car I've owned only overshadowed my an S2 Elise. Tempted to look into getting another once I get house sorted next year :)

I owned a LY R26 a few years ago, and it was the most unreliable car I've ever had. Closely followed by my 172. However, when it was working it was amazing to drive and always used to turn heads. I spent quite a while choosing mine (for what it was worth..) and ended up buying one from a member of the Renault Sport Owners Club. Things to watch out for imo when buying one now, a decade on; avoid any that have had modifications made to the suspension, check the window regulators are working, if remapped check which company did it and ensure that you are given the data sheet created during the remap, an uprated Scrorpion exhaust system is a bonus, check if the engine mounts are secure and if they have been changed at any point. Lastly, listen to the exhaust note on tick over. If it sounds unsteady, the injectors need changing.

My 182 was the most reliable car I've owned! Easily the most fun too.
