Who here owns a Subaru?

Because I was saving for a house.

After buying said house and living here for 3 months I have much more left than I originally sold the car for... so more fool me. Clearly I didn't need to sell it :(

Never mind.

Test driving the latest STi in December, expecting to be underwhelmed and therefore hoping to find a Spec C of sorts instead when I come to buy.

Not sure the 5 speed can though :D

It can't. The five-speed box is notoriously the weak point of modded WRXs, and usually goes bang at around 340bhp - although driving like you stole it can see the box out at 320 or so. Usually it's third that breaks. It's very common with people who slap bigger turbos in without the necessary supporting mods.

As for brakes:

O I know, I've broken one ! On my Dad's original TD05 powered bugeye WRX I managed to snap 2nd!

Fixed under warranty somehow.. Then he went on to ruin 1st when launching it at Santa Pod. Again fixed under warranty. Got his money's worth from his extended warranty I tell you!

Tell me more about these supporting mods! :)

What usually goes wrong in the boxes? Stripping gear teeth?

Probably a 6 speed conversion! However due to the frankly insane cost for a 6 speed 'box I figure you'd be better off just having a small pile of 5 speed boxes and just replace them each time they break!

Ahhhh I got ya.

I doubt I'd ever go as far as that... I did a few gearbox rebuilds/LSD swaps on the Rovers but then there wasn't really another step up in terms of performance from the 420.

If it got to the stage of having to do a 6 speed swap or fitting bigger brakes, I'd just buy an STi.

There is some sort of 5 speed gearbox brace doing the rounds recently. Apparently stops the casing from flexing and therefore less broken gears. They're called blast plates I believe...
