Who here owns a Subaru?

I would assume that they were swapped because someone somewhere read that you get more power with tubular headers. So you - about 5bhp with full supporting mods and remap. However, I would be wary or reading too much into this "cheap" business. My understand is, no matter whose name is on the delivery note, the headers are almost all made in the same Chinese factory. That seems an odd place for them to break too: they usually fail at the expansion joint. It's possible that something was allowing them to get stressed, such as a faulty exhaust fitting.

If you plan on any mods, and you need new headers anyway, get them ported if you are using OEM ones.

Thanks for your help, I will have a chat when I get back to the UK in terms of getting this sorted. They did briefly mention they will send over the new parts under warranty. If that does mean new standard OEM headers, what does it mean to get them ported and how do I do that?

Right guys, just sold my car tonight, the search is now on for a 2005 Impreza STI.

Questions:
  • How often does the cambelt need to be changed, seems a lot of adverts advertising the fact their car has had it done.
  • What are the common things to check for with this model, are there any tell tale signs of a car that's not been well maintained, specifically with the Imprezas?
  • Is the Prodrive version worth waiting on?
  • Theres some massive differences in price, £7500 to £10,000 for a 2005 model. Why?

Finally, some questions specifically for ScoobyDoo69:

  • What do I need to sound like yours? Is the Blitz Nur Spec a full system or just a backbox? Does the SSQV affect performance or risk any damage to the engine/turbo?
  • What have you done to your front grill, is it a full replacement or have you just debadged it?

So excited!!

For what its worth G4orce, I have a full turboback 3" non resonated Cobrasports system, I recently changed the 4" jap angles rear box for a straight 4.5" exit and sounds a little different but only slightly more bassy compared to this clip which I made a few months ago.

God that sounds nice! Thats the type of sound I want :D

The cambelt is usually a big service that is typically done at 50,000 miles or 6 years, so adverts stating it has been done is just some reassurance that you don't have a big service due.

I've had a 2005 with Prodrive and without, nice to have if you are not planning any mods, but if you are then it doesn't make much difference as you'll remap anyway.

Prices will vary from £7500 to £10k mainly depending mainly on mileage, 30k miles to 60k respectively.

To port your headers you are essentially opening up the holes to make them bigger, giving you more flow. My Dad did his own himself:

He basically bored them out until they were just smaller than the holes in the gaskets.

Harvey Smith did mine, and I have one of his up pipes too. Comes highly recommended!

Roger Clarke Motorsport list is at 42k miles or 3.5 years
ScoobyClinic and other various specialists have it as 50/60k or 5 years

Clutch, gearbox syncros, whining noise from the back - rear diff, poorly maintained as in no service history or litte. Mods with no remap (especially things like big cone filters, screws the MAF readings) decats make them overboost and they can't fuel accordingly. Rear shock absorbers tend to start knocking, easiest thing to do is replace although you can re-grease them. Other than that I can't really think of much
  • Is the Prodrive version worth waiting on?
    Yes and no
Yes if you don't want to mod it (but you will) as the power upgrade makes them a lot healthier than standard, and the lowering springs from Prodrive/Eibach make the world of difference to the feel of the car.
No if you plan to do things like exhaust, remap, suspension etc.

However test driving bog standard cars may leave you feeling a bit underwhelmed.
  • Theres some massive differences in price, £7500 to £10,000 for a 2005 model. Why?
Because some people are dreamers, and the mileage on them varies so much that people just kind of put their finger in the air to get an idea of price.

I have... ported manifold and stainless up pipe from Harvey Smith. Long 3" Decat bell mouth downpipe from Hayward and Scott, Blitz Nur Spec R system, which has been modified at the centre section end to be a true 3" System as they normally taper to 2.5" to fit the standard systems. HKS SSQV is blocked off completely now, but I did love the sound. It just got annoying on track days constantly going off. Around town it was awesome, but it did make the car over fuel between changes, resulting is massive bangs from the exhaust and often huge flames :D
  • What have you done to your front grill, is it a full replacement or have you just debadged it?
I have cut the badge holder out, shaved the grille and resprayed.

So excited!!

Hope that helps! :D

Sounds very nice sir

I try!

Bit of Subaru news, went to see the BRZ on Saturday. Didn't get a test drive. But very impressed on just looking at it.

I think it looked really nice. Interior was great, seats were great, the rear seats usable with the ability to fold them for bigger boot space (which was decent enough.) It's very low slung. The engine is really low in the engine bay. Seating position feels excellent. The only let downs for me are the rear lights, horrible looking standard radio, and the wheel gap. Other than that, I'm really looking forward to having a go in (a hopefully manual) one!

:)

Kosta, you have a reply on SN for your struts, :)

Replied :)

Good new, spoke to Graham Walker and they are covering whatever new parts it needs and will cover the costs of getting it fitted up to £35 per hour:)

Great news. Get them to confirm what other modifications the vehicle has for definite! And also if it has been mapped in anyway!

2 door? Looks just like a 4 door with fibreglass where the door join should be. It doesn't look like it has been shortened, and is a bit odd looking as a result.
