Who here owns a Subaru?

That black one you are on about looks fantastic. I agree with your points too. I thought the same.

Looks like its own by a posh kinda person though. Probably kept nice :) and judging by the car next to it hes an enthusiast. Looks a minter.

What's the best option?

Ideally I'd like to have an unsilenced 3" RCM centre section bolted onto a 3" decat downpipe.

Or I just get the Nur Spec R centre section cut to remove the silencer and have it welded to the downpipe. I'm thinking this is easier as the connection between the backbox and centre section would be perfect fit seeing as both are Blitz whereas having a Blitz/RCM connection may not be perfect?

What did you do and was it easy to find someone to weld on the 3" pipe?

Please, do not remove the "silencer" from the Nur Spec R centre section. It's not their to reduce noise, but to tune it to sound better. A guy in our club cut that bit out and it just didn't sound the same :(

The 2.5" section of the Nur Spec centre section can't be more than a few inches long. Any decent exhaust place should be able to cut it off and replace with 3". I had Hayward and Scott do it at the same time they fitted my 3" downpipe back when I had the black WRX.

From what I remember, centre sections don't fit the Nur Spec backbox because it's flange is at a different angle? Something like that anyway..

Hope that helps?

It has been mapped although I may be getting the map tweaked by Bob Rawle at the end of August, perhaps I'll get some GT spec headers and a Harvey Smith up pipe at the same time

Unless you're going for big power, just get the ported manifold from Harvey. No need for GT spec headers below 400bhp really.

Liking the black 2005 sti on scoobynet.

Question, mileage seems high to me. What are the 2.0 engines good for if serviced well?

Highest reliable figure I have is 140k miles on a WRX. I would expect an STI to be a bit less (although I await the posts of: "I know someone who has a friend..."). The thing that usually dies at that point is the turbo rather than the engine, but since repair is not even close to economic at that sort of mileage, the car usually gets scrapped. If you are prepared to pay the £1000-£1500 cost of a new turbo in a car worth maybe half as much again, then I would expect the engine might be good for another 20-30k miles. With emphasis on "might". But given the way some people drive them, many don't make it to 80k miles. If the car is entirely un-molested, then go with those first figures.

That's a massive help cheers mate! Did you get the flange welded back onto the new 3" section or did you just weld straight to the down pipe?

Just a question. My car when started after a while I can hear liquid running in the passenger footwell. It's like the car is sending fuel/water to the front or to the back, can't tell which. Is this normal?

Hi.

Ive been following this thread with great interest, as my knowledge lays with fords, however i WILL be purchasing a blob eye impreza STI very very soon.

Just a quick question. I have noticed that there are a few blob eye imprezas that say they are or have the JDM versions, after doing a bit of research, i understand that they are the japanese variant of the blob eye impreza UK type, is the insurance on the JDM variants higher than the UK impreza type ??

Also i have seen quiet a few claiming they have the PPP fitted, if they dont have the certificate for the PPP, could i potentially negotiate the price as they are claiming PPP and it may not have ??

Plenty more questions that i will ask. But keep this thread going chaps, as it is better than doing searches on google for information LOL

Most insurers will add a bit of premium for JDM versions (extra cost of parts), but walk away from anyone wanting a big hike. Use specialist insurers for best results: Keith Michaels, A-Plan, Greenlight. See this forum on ScoobyNet for contact details. If you phone KM, it's important that you get Gary Moulson.

The price of Blobs is now so low that anyone asking for a premium for a PPP on a model that old is extracting the urine. There's a lot of optimists out there (as you can tell by the asking prices), but Scoob prices have tanked, and it's a buyer's market. Bear in mind it cost £2k on an STI, when an STI was £25k, and figure that at best that proportion remains unchanged. If someone thinks it's worth £500 over base price then walk away - realistically, even with a cert, it's worth £100 on Blob on a perfect model on a good day. Without a cert it's utterly worthless: any idiot can pick up a cheap STI backbox and slap it on. In those circumstances go with book price etc.

Just thought i'd put this up, a friend came along to my last track day with his gopro so whacked that in the window for the first session and this is the result!

Car is a 2005 STi widetrack, BC racing coilovers, orangestuff pads, braided line, Bridgestone RE070 tyres, not been remapped (yet...)

Also we played with some different angles with the next 2 sessions and got this

Does the quality of the downpipe vary from different manufacturers? How much should I be looking to pay?

Yes, it does. Note however, that most exhaust systems are exactly that, and designed to fitted as complete systems. H&S are unusual in that they are happy to fit in bits. I originally had just the down- and cat-pipes replaced, with a 3" tapering to 2.5" unit with sports cat. It's the only bit that actually needs to be done up to at least 400bhp. Later H&S then redid the taper to 3", and fitted a 3" system to replace the mid- and tail-pipes. Total cost was about £1100 five years ago, but would have been about a grand if installed as one. I've seen system prices as log as £600 new, but I'd be reluctant to go below £800 for the sake of quality.

But, I have to ask: why are you doing this? If it's just for the noise, just do the back-box. If it's for the performance, forget it unless you are running at least 350bhp - there are more important things you need to do to get more power. If you are really set in it for the power, the only significant part is the down-pipe, and in particular, removing the cat. With no cat, 2.5" is fine all the way up to at least 400bhp.
