Who here owns a Subaru?

Looks damn clean and has some nice mods. Little bit concerned about running 350/350 on the 2.5 lump mind, must be about it's limit :confused:


If it's remapped it should be OK. The main issues with that engine concerned factory maps. That's not to say that it's bomb-proof, but I can't see an issue with 350/350 on a 2.5l unless you are very unlucky.
 
Found it. Error code p0302 - misfire cylinder 2. Had the spark plugs and coil pack changed but it still misfires. Just reset it and it felt fine; went to the shops, then started car up and its back on again :(

Looking into this a bit more and somehing called a neutral position switch could possibly be causing the problem. Has anyone fitted a new one or fixed one?

My neutral position sensor is fubared so lost a lot low down and a bit all over. Plus I have had it mapped so it takes a little bit longer to spool but holds a lot more up top.

So combined with that and the broken NPS I can't really compare spool.

I will say what power it made when I get it on the dyno at Powerstation as I do all my runs there, so it's a better comparison. I'm happy given the NPS though :)

Would i be correct in saying that if i added a centre section to an aftermarket backbox that i would not need a remap??

However if i was to add a 1st decat downpipe that i would require a remap, and also i would then have to send the car to a specialist garage to have an MOT completed ?? LOL Plus the benefits in terms of BHP would be better??

Yes, changing any part of the exhaust after the second cat does not need a remap. If you change or remove either of the cats - especially the first - you will need a remap. This is because of the second lambda sensor after the second cat. There are ways of "fixing" this, but it still needs to be done in the map.

Recap: exhaust usually goes: 1) downpipe (with a cat), 2) cat-pipe (have a guess), 3) centre section, 4) backbox. (WRXs also have (IIRC) a cat on the up-pipe, STIs do not.) Change either or both of the first two: remap. Change the second two: no remap. The car will pass an MoT with just the first (down-pipe) cat, but it's up in the air with just the second. A sports cat in the down-pipe and no cat-pipe cat will produce about the same power as a full turbo-back decat. At worst you'll lose 5BHP, but will pass an MoT. Leave the original cat in the down-pipe, but remove the cat-pipe cat and you will lose at worst 10bhp (probably less), and will pass an MoT. A full decat will probably (but not certainly) fail an MoT, and thus you will need what is usually referred to as an "MoT-friendly" garage.
 
Centre section, no remap need.

Downpipe - ideally get a remap, although I ran mine for a while without and it seemed fine.

Worth the extra performance in my eyes, although a Sports Cat will keep you MOT friendly.
 
Well, had a Hawk STI lined up for Saturday, he has since pulled out of the sale and decided to keep.

In one respect I'm sort of glad as ideally wanted a black blob STI. The search continues!

You'd prefer a blob to a hawk? Please tell me that's only for financial reasons?
 
Nope, just continue to hear about how much better they are in both reliability and power delivery (subjective: low end torque on 2.5 versus one hit delivery on 2.0)

Still would go for a hawk though if a good one came up.
 
Well the dealer made a monumental mess of setting up a test drive of the current 4 door so didn't drive it, but did wasn't near 3 hours getting there and back and standing about...to say I wasn't impressed is a bit of an understatement.

Did have a look round a car and to be honest I wasn't that impressed, maybe driving would have changed that impression, but it felt very cheap and nasty, even compared to a focus or Citroen DS3. The keyless entry was a surprise to see but the key looks like something out of a cheap Christmas cracker, boot is minuscule and the stereo might be the same one that came in my 2004 STI...

The seats didn't feel that nice or supportive compared to the old STI seats or the ones in my Jag and the rest of the controls weren't much better...maybe I've grown out of them now, but I'd rather throw my money at an M3 or C63 than one.

You don't buy a Impreza for the interior trim. Or the boot space (although, yes, it's pathetic: longer than the old saloons, but half as much space). And yes, sadly the seats have slowly got worse since even the bugeyes.

When the car was 20K ish new that was a fair argument, when they are over 30K it doesn't hold quite as much water. I agree the drive is the important bit but you don't expect the car to feel like its been built from parts from the Chevrolet rejects bin...
