Who here owns a Subaru?

I was looking at a 56 plate spec D. To be honest I can't see me taking it past 300-320bhp.

Is it just the pistons that require swapping to forged one's or the rods too?

All Subaru EJ motor crankshafts and connecting rods are made using forged steel material. The crankshafts being made from forged high-carbon steel and rods from forged steel.

So just the pistons and connecting rods should be upgraded.

I'd avoid a 2.5 unless it's already had work done personally, i'd say go for a widetrack blobeye as you get all the benifits of the later cars with getting DCCD, wider track, better interior etc but with the stronger 2.0 engine. They can be hard to find though and do command a hefty premium over normal blobeye cars but they're worth it in my opinion as it's the one i owned myself!

2.5's don't seem to like revs as much as the 2.0 either, one tuner i talked to said in his opinion a lot of the 2.5 issues are with to do with high revs and them just not being able to handle it like the 2.0's. No idea how much truth there is to that though.

My bug...

I always said if I was moving from the Rover I'd get myself a 2 door classic but with the reasons for selling the Rover being a new job with longer commute and needing a more family/baby friendly car, an old Impreza wasn't really a good idea.

Found myself this 02 WRX with FSH, 72k on the clock for just over 3k. There's a lot of junk out there so think I paid for a fair price for a good car.

So far, I've changed the side skirts for body coloured skirts and have given it a full service with cambelt, water pump and all tensioners.

I'm finding it hard to keep the modding bug at bay but resisting so far. It was only bought as a stop gap between the Rover and a widetrack STi but with the possibility of a house purchase in the not so distant future, it may have to stay a little longer.

It's pretty slow but the road presence, the noise and it's capabilities are doing a good job of keeping me occupied for now. Oh... and not forgetting the Subaru wave ;)

Traded mt 2007 Forester XT for something newer (2013 crosstrek) and better on petrol, had it 2 weeks and im loving it, not as much power as my XT but 450 miles to a full tank and only $37 to fill up from empty :) just got to register my plates tomorrow which will set me back about $350

...
Which trim level did you go for? I've been looking at a Crosstrek or Jeep Renegade. Wish the Yeti TDi was available over here.

I'll be right behind you I think! Getting the keys to my house in coming weeks, so once I've settled I'll be after a Subaru again!

bet u wish you never sold your beast hey m8y :)

prices have gone nuts at mo lol hope they drop by next year :)

at mo 7k cash will get a blob STI 2003-2005 ish with about 70k on clock.did see a wrx fully forged sti look alike with about 60-70k on clock go for 5500 recently think it had 320bhp with print out looked mint :D:D

i cant do nothing till next year :mad::mad:

I'm looking to get a 2003/2004 Blobeye WRX as soon as my current Suzuki Swift Sport sells... I had a drive of one a while back and am well impressed with the performance (probably coming from the Swift made it feel faster). Can't wait to get one now, but finding blue ones in standard form isn't super easy. There is one up for £5.2k w/ 93k on the clock, but that's at least £1k higher than it should be price wise.

It's pretty much just the rear shocks to watch out for on things specific to these, isn't it? Other than that it's normal car checks?

Cheers guys!

Don't be afraid of a lightly modded one, remap, exhaust & coilovers etc as they're only things you'd end up doing yourself in next to no time.

Rear struts do tend to go on all of them from around the 60k mark and it's usually easier just to go with a set of coilovers at that point, otherwise make sure it's cambelt has been done.

Very much wish I hadn't have sold it and just chucked it in storage actually!

The money I will have spare from savings after all the house expenditure will easily cover the money I got back from the Subaru... o well hindsight!

Prices are silly though you're right. Although I find the WRX prices more silly than the STi!

yes i know i do LOL when looking and seeing how much they want for a WRX lol hopefully prices sort it self by next year :P

Prices seem to be in a wide bracket... the majority of the 03/04 with higher miles sit between £3500 to £4k, but then you get ones like this nice standard 04 blobeye with owners asking £5.2k. Wishful thinking from this guy if you ask me, sure it's a standard blue one that don't come around too often, but still lol. One like this should go for around £4.3k I believe.

You're right there! Might be wise not ruling out lightly modded ones.

^^

What did you get a deposit down on dude? All this WRX talk makes me want one even more now!

Lightly modded, exhaust, filter, remap, suspension etc. I would 100% consider.

Only if good service history/receipts and mapped by someone reputable. :)

Ta man :). Scoobyworld garage any good? I'm not familiar with the Impreza scene just yet! They did the mapping and suspension set up on the one beneath.

What about this one? It is apparently PPP registered (no cert, but he has spoken to Prodrive). One hell of a drive there and back being on the Isle of Skye! The lights apparently are set up within being drilled in to the bonnet, so they don't come with the car (which is good!)

Okay cool thanks! I've emailed asking a few questions about it, so we will soon see what is said about the service history. Hoping it's a good one as that could be an awesome drive back!

Went from a standard Forester XT with a mild tune (260bhp) and a H&S catback to this Litchfield tuned puppy:
