Who is getting the New Mac Pro

Sadly not! didnt get time. Arrived at 6pm and was otherwise detained so didnt get to open the box till 8. Just about got everything setup and installed by the time i went to bed.

But to be fair it does look like everyone elses nMP ;)

According to this Hollyhill hasn't manufactured anything since the original iMac. It was transformed into a "services centre". It's listed as "Apple distribution international ltd". So maybe it's their European base for EU distribution. I don't think Cork port is that big or busy compared to other ports in Europe, so they probably get tax breaks or kick backs (as well as all the tax breaks and loop holes they got setting up in Ireland compared to the UK or other European countries) to bring their cargo through there, rather than if they were using something (or setup somewhere) like London gateway, Southampton, Rotterdam or even Dublin port.

Apple are based in Ireland for tax purposes. They have a setup, known in the tax avoidance world as the "double Irish", where they are domiciled in Ireland but registered for tax in Bermuda.

Another vote of excellence from me, the iBin is complete trash. Couldn't have said it better my self. Hence moving away from the mac to a pc.

In terms of it looking like a bin, here is a good read. This guy bought a bathroom bin and made a replica mac pro out of it. Those temps don't look healthy however.

mac pro hackintosh replica based on actual trashcan

Each to their own depending on what you need from a machine, but at least come up with something more reasoned and plausible than 'iBin' and 'complete trash' which is clearly trash in itself. Another 'lets jump on the apple bashing bandwagon'

You moved from a Mac to a PC. Good for you, your choice and im not going to call you a 'PC fanboy' for it ;)

To be fair, I work between an Macbook Pro and a X79 based PC system for various application needs, such as needing Xcode for development.

However for the money they are charging and the lack of expandability it just doesn't make sense. They go on about thunderbolt this and thunderbolt that however since the time I bought my Macbook pro during the big thunderbolt reveal I have yet to see a practical use for it. Personally I use it as a mini display port and that is it.

However I have plenty of PCI-e slots in my x79 rig and I don't A) have another thing on my desk plugged into a cable and B) don't have to pay the absurd premium to get the same device in thunderbolt form. That is of course you can even get thunderbolt device that has the same functionality.

For instance there are a great deal of application that only make use CUDA for hardware acceleration. In my x79 rig I could just drop in a CUDA based card be on my way even if the system already had a AMD card in it.

So you bought what you need to which is great. In terms of the cost i have to disagree, there are plenty of posts out there showing that the same PC based equivalent costs around the same price if not more.

As for expandability it has everything needed, fine its not internal but from the posts ive seen this doesnt bother 99% of people and in fact they have embraced it.

In terms of CUDA then yes there is no support, but again you buy the machine you need to do the task.

Each to there own.

Mine was BTO to though. I emailed Tim cook a few weeks back and got a call from an 'Apple Exec' 24 hours later. Things seemed to move along after that....

Give it a try

Having tried the new mac pro instore yesterday I oddly thought my haswell 15inch MBP was more responsive.

I believe computing power has got to the point that only those using the right apps will see any difference in models. Sure the Workstation CPUs will benefit those doing video/music/graphic work etc but on the whole day to day stuff, you will see little is any difference between product line ups.

Today, your starting point is shelling out over four grand on mid range 6 core box, another 4 grand to get any decent 4 disk raid at all, new thunderbolt box to broadcast monitor, daisy chain the lot on your desk like it was SCSI hack in SGI times, then you realise 4K works properly only with Apple's own monitors, probably another 4 grand, and as you sit down tired, with wallet bleeding all over your shorts and bank calling every 5 minutes to check if you were being robbed, you realise the motherlovers didn't even include basic keyboard and mouse with your iBin and they still want £40 plus VAT for each before you can even type your iCloud login at startup.

THIS! 1000x THIS!! The new mac pro was a terrible move by Apple. The editing rig at my old job was an old style Mac Pro with BlackMagic HDMI card and a Matrox MX02 system. Perfect. One cable to a rackmount breakout box.

We then moved to an iMac, using the same thunderbolt used in the mac pro. BlackMagic card was rendered useless, Matrox MX02 now needed an extra power supply and loads of expensive cables for a thunderbolt to PCIe adaptor. Ridiculous. Using Thunderbolt added a whole new bag of hurt, things not working as they should etc.

You could also argue it's peripheral makers that need to move forward with the times.

And finally ! It's arrived !
