Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Out of interest, what condition were the bodywork and alloys in to warrant £450 of charges? If you were so inclined could you have sorted it yourself for less?

I reversed into a wall denting the rear bumper/diffuser section. I got this sorted before I sent it back and the end result was perfect but cost £200. One of the alloy wheels was slightly misshaped after hitting a massive pot-hole in the dark.

Thanks for posting up your real experiences SDK - very useful.

£270pm ---> £405pm, 50% extra. There's a lesson in there for people looking at these deals isnt there?

Also £200 on bodywork, plus I assume all four wheels to be refurbed is unlikely to be unusual for one of these. Replacement key less so.

So in reality then, if you can avoid driving into things and losing your keys, the extra would be nearer £1000 for the mileage and not much else :p

Not really sure what lesson you are describing here.

1. Calculate the total cost including initial payment and fees and not just the headline amount. Only a fool would do otherwise.
2. Get a deal that includes the mileage you actually need. Circumstances can change but even in your own car high mileage will drive higher depreciation.
2. Losing keys will cost the same for a car you own.
3. Dents will cost the same to repair for a car you own. You can choose not to repair but good luck with trying to sell it in that case.

Exactly - far too many people go into these leases thinking that they will be insulated from additional unexpected costs.

'Yea its not my car so I don't have to worry, I like that' is a common argument in favour. The reality is that you do have to worry - like you would with any car!

There is a great thread on Pistonheads about a Golf R lease. The lessee had a manual and shifted into 2nd at about 70mph. From memory it was the guts of £8k to replace the engine. If it was his own car he could have put a used engine in for almost half the price.

To clarify - I knew the final mileage would be more so was saving money each month to cover it. I was also expecting the costs for the other stuff.
I did try to replace the key myself from VW but I needed the V5 which the lease company had so I couldn’t. VW quoted £300 so I saved £100 there :).

I should soon (if 3 months is considered soon) be part of the R family, placed an order last week;

3 Door 310 DSG
Lapiz Blue
19" Black Pretorias
Dynaudio
Rear camera
DCC
Black mirrors

The real PITA for me is that for some bizarre reason the 3 door can't be configured for keyless, the 5 door can and the 3 door in other countries can. It's really starting to grate on me that i'll be taking a step backwards from my current car in this respect, to the point of actually considering changing to the 5 door so I can spec it.

Normally I wouldn't consider it as for my needs 3 doors is just fine and IMHO generally looks better, but the 5 door actually does look pretty sleek on the MK7.5 (and the 7).

Can't seem to get an answer off VW why keyless isn't an option in the UK, they just say 'factory decision'.

I currently have a 66 plate Golf GTD through my work lease (NHS) is rather expensive so when it goes back in October I’m hoping to purchase a used Golf - looking at both the Mk 7 GTI and R. I’m aware the GTI has satnav (as per my current GTD) however most R’s don’t have it. Am I correct in thinking I can pay the dealer approx £250 to have CarPlay enabled on the basic car infotainment system in the 2015/16 Golf R?

Thanks

Probably for the best if your location is correct. A 5 door Golf R with keyless in London would probably be in your possession for about 2 weeks before it’s targeted and taken from you. A 3dr is nowhere near as desirable to gangs

Sat-Nav was standard on MY17 Week 22 , 2016 onwards. Only MIB 2 6.5 Inch units with the voice button on the Infotainement System can be enabled i believe. To be honest if you get a decent phone holder you wont be missing much from Carplay. I have stopped using mine as you have to plug it in.

Live in the North West but work in London during the week, car would never see London! :)

It was never £270 a month when you factor in the initial payment. More in the region of £335.

Also damage repairs cost the same whether it is a lease or your own car. Why is that even categorised as the cost of leasing? Next you'll be telling me you should include petrol and insurance costs to get the true cost of a lease.

If I damage my car, I get it repaired. Who owns it is irrelevant.
