Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Not yet but I want to. I believe that I have the same 7 speed box in my 2016 Audi A4 and whilst it's not perfect it is very good a lot of the time, so I could definitely live with it in another car.
I think (based on being corrected in another thread) the A4 has a DL501, the GTI will have a DQ380.

I test drove a pre-facelift R but didn't enjoy it at all. I think it was mostly because of the rubbish 6 speed DSG box which they fixed with the facelifted models.
There seems to be a consensus that the 7 speed is a lot better than the 6. I can't say, never had the 6 speed.

The 7 can occasionally hunt for the right gear if you floor it for overtaking if you're not in S mode on the gearbox. Most of the time it's perfect and gives remarkably good economy on a long run.

What’s rubbish about the 6 speed DSG on the pre facelift R ? Intrigued as I have ran one for over 3 years now.

It wasn't as smooth as my 7 speed. It lurched if you came off the throttle when it didn't expect you too, and just seemed confused most of the time.

Ah okay, thanks for the info. I'll have to pay particular attention to the box then if I do test drive one.

I cant say i have experienced any lurching and i drive my R pretty damn hard. The only thing close to it being lurching is when it is on sports mode and it is down shifting automatically from 3rd to 2nd gear lifting off the throttle completely it there is a light stutter almost like massive engine braking and it does a bit of a pop on the exhaust as well.

On normal D or E mode or manual mode in E D or S it is all smooth :D

Similar experience with my GTI Mk7, 6 speed DSG. I have no real issues with it.

I do have the habit of "dropping" it into Sport mode from Dynamic for overtaking sometimes, which helps with the responsiveness.

The 6 speed in my old mk7 R was the best out of all the DSG boxes I’ve had or driven over the years.

Felt better than my current 7 speed in the RS3.

My in laws currently own a 2009 1.4 TDI 140BHP and the ABS/traction & brake lights are all on. Had the car diagnosed in a local garage that has pointed to the ABS controle module unit fault code 16352, apparently this was a common fault on this model of car and can cost up to £1,500 just for a replacement unit :(

VW do a repair kit for the fault so the whole part doesn’t need replaced it’s around £250 fitted the last time I checked. If they have owned the car for some time and serviced it at VW VAG are still fitting them for free under goodwill.

I read it online that it was a common fault. Anyway, the in laws part exchanged it today for a newer Golf as they were offered a good price for there Golf plus the car they were buying was cheap :)

I'm a fully converted Golf guy now after years of company car Astra's and most recently a Ford Focus ST (diesel).

I bought a 2014 GTD which I had for 3 months and just felt like I was missing out not going for a petrol car (it's still for sale at Arnold Clark Toyota in East Kilbride).

So it was traded in for a 2016 Golf GTI +. And it was 100% the right decision. I almost bought an M140i but it was lacking lots of kit and was also a manual.
So far it's been great, looks the part IMO and it's now equipped with a full Ramair intake, turbo elbow, turbo muffler delete and Stage 1 remap.

Golf R beating power and torque and less weight. Although an R would still snaffle me off the line, it fair shifts.

Best thing is it looks totally standard but I may change the exhaust tips.

I imagine most Golf Rs are also tunned as well, so those will be about 375bhp :)

The GTI is a lovely car, very similar performance to my 2.0 TSFI Audi A4 at 252ps out of the factor. I’m tempted by a 340ps stage 1 myself.
