Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Thanks Dean. I think Stage 1 seems a no brainer in terms of bringing the car alive. TCU map obv adds a fair bit of cost, but agree it makes sense. I use a specialist for servicing, main dealer wouldn't even clean the haldex filter guaze. That said, I think the main thing I need to overcome is the warranty peace of mind and what the genuine risk of failure is if I just keep it simple and map without components. Thanks for advice!

Insurance with admiral has almost lapsed which means I have a downpipe and intercooler on order ready for stage 2.

It wont be a huge increase in power but interested to see the difference between Stage 1 & 2.

I’ve got a 7.5 GTI and when driving on windy country roads at night regularly receive errors regarding the headlight light bending system, once I come to a stop the lights do the reconfiguration dance and it’s fine for a bit until some more cornering. It’s fine in daylight, on the motorway or if I turn off light bending in drive mode.

Assuming it’s a sensor somewhere that’s gone, and just wondered on the off that anyone has experience and can give some insight. I do not have any persisting warning lights, but also no code reader to check any stored codes - which will be my next step

Is that the AFS error?
I had that on my 7, one of the headlights got soaked inside, had to replace the headlight and control module, thankfully under warranty, was around £850 I think.

Yeah that's the one, not the answer I was hoping for! but thanks, might get it booked in at a dealer for diagnosis. Glad I at least can disable it as a workaround since I'm definitely out of warranty

I think if I remember correctly they said they had to replace both control modules for both headlights, but I'd have to check, I didn't pay as much attention as I was not paying for it! So yours might not be as bad. Mind you your headlights are slightly different to mine.

Could you not try to get the car on VW's All In?

"Exclusively available for vehicles between 3 & 6 years old, get 2 years’ Roadside Assistance, 2 years’ Warranty, 2 MOTs and 2 services, all for just £33.45 a month"

Then see if it can be done under this policy? Might not work if they pick it up during the inspection etc but thought it could be worth mentioning as the 2 year cover comes in cheaper than the work itself on the off chance you would be able to do it this way.

Just thought I'd let you know incase it could work out in your favor, I have this on my car as I believe a faulty digital dash bill can be almost £2k.

What's a good price for a 17 plate onwards GTD or R with sub 30k on the clock.

Have a few alerts for a 3 door GTD or R and with the market how it is I can't gauge what is a good price right now. As far as I'm concerned the Golf R was a £30k car new but I may be well off the mark now with the facelift versions.

Would be nice to have an R but think I'd probably like it too much and not want to put miles on it.

A 17 plate will be 95% facelift version at least for the R. They will command a few k more £ wise than the pre facelift 66 plate or older. Ultimately it comes down to the options they have be added from order and also the usual condition, servicing and if it has been modded or not. Ballpark for a Mk7.5 R 17 plate that’s under 30K miles would be in the £23K range. As said above it can vary.

Who’s had there cars remapped and by who?

Looking to get mine done but Revo and Apr are rather quite expensive but I’ve come across Celtic Tuning who are charging £300 which is about half the price of the others.

I'm also toying with that at the mo, I was also looking at Revo and might get the DSG map too while I'm at it....

I know the Revo and Apr maps will be good but I’m really struggling to justify paying nearly double over a Celtic map. I mean they are all going to be pretty similar surely.

Anyone have one?

I take it you're reasonably local to there then, judging by your location? Will have to see how you get on, when you booked in for?

Whilst their setup there is very impressive I didn’t have a very good experience with Celtic Tuning.

I took my Mountune mapped warranty covered ST in for a dyno a few years ago. They did the dyno then I waited for 40 minutes for someone to come get me from the waiting area. I got impatient and then went to the reception and asked what they were doing and whether I can go now.

The lady on the desk said “We just want to make sure you’re happy with the map”…cue my confusion…i said i just came in for a dyno. She rushes off and comes back and says I was about 20 seconds away from getting a new map. I am quite rightfully annoyed. The car was still under warranty with a Mountune map why would I get one of their knock off maps.

I collect the car and ask the engineer whether anything was done to the car and he said no, nothing was touched.

I write an email to them and explain my annoyances and I get an email back explaining that they angle grinded the ECU out of the tamper proof cage and they were going to map it manually as they couldn’t do it through the OBD. I go out to check the car and yes, there was angle grinder marks off over it to get it out. Annoyance intensifies.

I pushed for a new ECU cage which they begrudgingly did but that was it. No gestures of goodwill, I still had to pay for the dyno and I was still worried about my warranty if anything went wrong with the car.

The skeptic in me thinks they were trying to copy the map off my ECU.

It was odd as there was such an emphasis on making sure everything was correct before you even had an appointment time.

I’d go Revo every time.
