Who owns a Golf GTD / GTI / R?

Noticed today my drivers side door still light (the red strip light) doesn't work. Quick Google suggested it'll be covered by warranty. Time for a phone call...

Noticed a fair bit of noise / vibration at motorway speeds the other day in our MK7 GTI. It's going into the local VW specialist we use for servicing later this week to check it out.

I'm half expecting it to be another buckled wheel (19" with low profiles tyres do not cope well with the potholes round here) but here's hoping...

Still on the hunt for the unicorn Golf R or GTD.

It seems like the sweet spot is a 2017/18 MY car due to euro 6? Am I correct In thinking this? The 310 models have a better fuel pump and can be mapped better.

Where is the best place to look for a 2017/18 3 door, dynaudio, auto, pano roof, leather seats, Pretoria/spielberg? wheels with sub 30k on the clock?

Why a golf R or GTD? I feel like they’re completely different cars.

Auto trader is a good start, but also worth speaking to a few dealerships and getting your name down.

Try a few forums too.

If you get a 310 make sure the recent DSG recall has been done, otherwise you’re likely going to be dealing with a failed gearbox at some point. Mine was replaced under warranty, and they’ve done about 12 others now, all either extensive fixes or replacements.

Good question. I think it's a case of keep my stored low mileage Fiesta ST that I've ploughed a load of money into and have a GTD or sell the Fiesta ST as I just don't use it and get a Golf R that is fast enough and also comfortable enough for longer trips.

I scour auto-trader and have alerts and the same goes with ebay but trying to the find the unicorn is hard and even when I do they're always in Scotland! If the car is right I will travel.

So it seems like the things to look out for are gearbox failures?

Is the 310 more prone to issues?

So a number of the 310 cars have the DSG gearbox that had a manufacturing fault - it’s a VW recall that is done even outside of warranty. Basically the auxiliary pump inside the gearbox disintegrates over time. First part of the recall is to update the gearbox software to which then allows it to check for the fault. Then more often than not, you’ll get the gearbox error warning - dealer will disassemble and usually need to replace the entire DSG box if the pump failure has caused any damage to components.

It’s a faff but means that my Golf R that had done 50k miles now has a fresh new DSG box in it free of charge.

No other issues with mine. And it sounds good because it was just before the Petrol filters because compulsory.

This was the issue I had with mine. They changed something (can't remember exactly what) which cost me £1000. It didn't fix it and I was told I needed to buy a new gearbox. A 2017/2018 car will not be under warranty.

Mines a 2017 car and the DSG gearbox was entirely replaced by VW under recall late last year, well outside of warranty (and before I got it onto the all-in plan - in fact I needed to get all outstanding recalls done before they’d let me onto it)

For reference, its campaign code 34K1: DQ381 update.

I flashed it to a previous version of the gearbox software and sold the car to WBAC. Someone else's problem now.

I told them other people had been having the same issues after the update (found cases in forums). They (obviously) said they'd not heard of it. I wasted £1000 on the "fix" that I knew wasn't going to work. The car had full VW service history at the same dealer.

Can only assume it was a bad dealer or the recall wasn’t prevalent/acknowledged at the time. Either way that sucks.

But, going back to OP’s question - as far as I’m aware all 310 versions have this DSG gearbox so will need the recall done, so just make sure it has been before you go for one.

Always been scared of DSG for reasons like this… Ultimately gave in and currently have DSG though.

So many people have 0 issues, but then a decent amount of horror stories.

Myself and my partners experience with VW Dealers has been extremely poor on every single occasion. They always put up a fight when it comes to fixing something under warranty, always takes a fight to get them to do something which is disappointing.

My dad can only praise Toyota and their customer service over the years, after things like services he gets little notes left to say they have ensured all pressures are correct, topped up if necessary and even replaced all wheel bolt covers as they looked tarnished/weathered off their own back and no he’s not that old  Just seems they do the extra bits which cost very little but go a long way.

I bought a 2018 Golf R in 2021 with potential view of going a bit crazy with tuning :)

Straight away I knew the 2019+ cars, the "300" models, werent even in my interest. GPF combined with keyless nonsense coming baked in on them - you have to be out of your mind to buy one of these with keyless IMO, if you want it to hang around anyway.

I believe the "300" models also have fewer injectors - I didnt look into them too much though as the above GPF and keyless was enough to put me off.

I put my VIN in a checker and it tells me I dont have any recalls outstanding, hopefully thats correct!

The 7 Speeds (in the 7.5s) are also stronger than the 6 speeds too - if you do decide to tune.

Revo do claim to have got 400hp (stage 2) out of the GPF equipped cars but I wouldnt trust that (based on prior Revo experience) until I saw one of those cars go up against a 'real' stage 2 car.

I also pulled my car out of the dealer network as soon as I purchased - take it to a specialist who maintains it properly :)

Get yourself a steering lock as well too - every little helps

I have a 2019 R and recently went stage 1 with intake mods. It did very nicely and got 390bhp and also got a tcu tune. It went more bhp in crewe and they have a good reputation, but all dynos bend the truth a little, some more than others lol, but I know It transformed the car. I deffo recommend stage 1 on these at the very least. I believe gpf model have one less fuel rail, and they upped the boost from 1.3 bar to 1.5 to compensate for the drop in power, and make up that power and get back into the 300s.

I heard about dsg recalls too and vin check says mine isn't effected either.

In terms of keyless entry, mine does have it and I just negate that by having a Faraday pouch and put my keys in it every time I get home.

Completely kills the link and the risk is the same as having a non keyless car imo, as in they will need to break in and get the keys themselves. I also have a milenco steering lock.

At the end of the day if they want the car, they will do whatever they are willing to risk to get it. If you have keyless and no security to kill the link, then it's obviously easy if they have the kit to do it.

If you have a key, and they want the car that badly they are coming into your home for the keys, plain and simple.

I didn't realise the 19 plates had keyless as standard?

I do love the keyless on my lowly Fiesta ST and can't say it concerns me. As has been said above, if they want the car they'll have it.

I think I would still want a 17/18 if the Unicorn presented itself. Blakedown have one at the moment with a perfect spec but 69 plate and 5 door. I just don't think I can love a 5 door like a 3.

Hi all,

Not looking at a Golf as such but a 2018 Seat Leon 190 DSG - Anyone any idea on how good the DSG boxes are? I quite fancy a DSG but have heard a lot of conflicting info on dry vs wet system and 6 speed vs 7, some brilliant some terrible - Anyone have any idea which box the 2.0 TFSI uses and it's reliability? :)

Hi All,

Looking for bolster repair for my 2012 Mk6 - predictably the driver's side vertical bolster has split at the stitching, wearing at the foam. The side bolster (horizontal piece) is also wearing, however not split.

Anyone have any recommendations for a bolster repair place in Hertfordshire/North London area? TIA :)

Ah interesting you say that, the drivers right side bolster on the seat on mine has started to disintegrate inside, common issue apparently. Needs the foam replacing....

Yep, makes sense unfortunately. I've just received a quote for £295+VAT for a driver's seat repair (side bolster and vertical bolster repair)
