Who owns a Mondeo ST220 / ST TDCI?

Sadly I think a Focus ST (at least, 1 that I want) would kill me financially, so ive been looking at these ST220's, I never considered a Mondeo before, but damn if these don't look tasty .....

Not sure what I should be looking for (bar getting one pre-2006 otherwise tax will go to town with me), ideally it would be black but seem to be rarer (that blue colour is nice however), with a black leather interior. I think low mileage might be difficult (well, difficult to keep the price lower). I found this one -

Looks surprisingly in good nick, only downer is the basic stereo inside from what I can see, and top whack price (I think ?). What do you guys think ? What should I realistically be looking to pay for one ?

Ideally I could do this part-exchange with my Focus 1.8 Sport S (45,000 mileage). What do you think they would offer here ? Straight swap would make me happy but I doubt they would go for that :)

How difficult are repairs and getting hold of parts for these ? I try to do as much work as possible to my cars myself, ideally sourcing parts and getting them changed being relatively easy would be nice.

Th ST220 is a great car and cheaper to run/maintain that the Focus ST. The Mondeo is nicer inside also and great on the motorway. There's not much that go's wrong with them really. I have a black one with 90k on that I'm selling soon for 3k but I'm having a hard time finding something that's a worthy replacement.
I would say the one u linked too is slightly overpriced. The best deals are private sales as they seem to be going for a good few hundred cheaper than dealer's inflated prices. If your buying a 2004 with 60-80k on I wouldn't pay more than 3.5k.

I think that's pretty face lift model in which case I'd avoid. Only a 5 speed box, and rust issues that were both resolved with the face-lift.

Ah good point, I believe these are second half of 2003 ? Gotta be 6 speed, no point otherwise. Guess I'm hunting between second half 2003 to 2005 (to avoid tax hike) :) The hunt continues :p

my £1775 repair spend on mine last year says different :(
main failures/repairs below
~£900 - clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder
~£200 - rear shocks
~£150 - front springs
~£350 - spark plugs and genuine leads
all prices include labour
mechanic said he tried the pattern leads and the fit was so poor he didn't risk using them and ordered genuine instead, which I might add are an extortinate price (somewhere in the region of £200 iirc) ~:(

What mileage? Clutch is a given after a while! And it doesn't feel like you can blame poor pattern leads on the car :p

53 plate
just done 104k

It didn't have pattern leads, it had originals, we tried to rpelace with pattern parts at around £40 but he said they didn't fit ove rthe end of the plugs very well and wasn't confident they would stay on properly.
Not normally a problem but on a V6 engine with the inlet manifold covering the rear bank it would be a big(ger) job to correct if they did turn out to be no good.

what mileage did your clutch go? what were the symptoms? my ST220 is on 90k now so im worrying about the clutch :(
altough my mechanic thinks its fine and most weirdly seem to go around the 70k mark

What I meant is that if the patterns you got weren't a good fit, that's hardly the fault of the car!

At 104k I'd say that although it doesn't make the bill any smaller, it's a reasonable and expectable expense for the mileage, so you've just got to take that on the chin.

Dealer wasn't budging on the price of the one I linked, and being a dealer I wasn't going to get much in part exchange with my 07 Focus (Between 2-2.5K, hell naw). Guess I'm going to have to sell this privately ..... don't look forward to it !

It's a silly suggestion anyway for someone who is in the market for, and has made their mind up on a performance Ford, especially in a thread dedicated to a particular car!

This one looks tasty - ST220

Looks good from the photos, obviously would need to view and inspect it. Mileage always worries me, whenever I look for cars normally I wouldn't look at cars with this mileage, but I guess with this type of car, it cant be helped.

Sorry for the questions, this is only the third time I have bought a car, not exactly an expert at it, terrified of getting a lemon :p

Am I right in reading that tax no longer transfers when a car is sold anymore ?

That's been for sale for ages that one and it's really cheap so I would suspect all is not right with that car.
Wouldn't worry about buying one with 80k on or so u will be able to tell if it's looked after when u drive it. I got my ST220 8 months ago with 83k and I've now done 90k and it still feels and drives better than my last car that only had 60k on and was 2yrs newer.

Something in my brain did wonder why those photos were from early Feb, at that price, and why it hasn't been snatched up yet. Think I'm going to need to clean my car this weekend and get it up up for sale ASAP, then I know what I'm playing with cash wise (sale of car + extra in the bank). Safe to say I shouldn't be spending anymore than 3.5K on one of these (3.5K being good condition, reasonable mileage) ?

£3.5k will get you a decent ST220 if you look around. The engines are solid so do not worry about mileage. Just make sure its service history is up to date.

My ST has the following: 54 plate, 87k, 4 new Goodyear EF1A2 tyres, just had the wheels refurbed, new blistein springs all around, 11 months MOT, FSH and a full Milltek catback system. I would be asking for around £4k if i wanted to sell. (i dont, not yet anyway)

Yeh for that price it should have sold in days so it's obviously too good to be true given that it's re advertised like 3 times.
The ST220 prices have actually risen over the last year which is weird as most cars actually depreciate year upon year. I was trying to buy one 18 months ago and gave up due to there not being many around but i could have got one cheaper back then than what there charging now for them. I paid 3.5k for a 2004 with 83k on 8 months ago that was mint and had same owner for 9yrs. Your best waiting for a good private sale to come up so u can speak to the owner about the cars history and get it for a reasonable price.
Most for sale seem to be at car dealerships who like to bang on about how rare they are and that there a future classic that's only going to rise in value as the amount left dwindle down.
For 3.5k-3.8k u should be able to get a 2004/5 with between 60-80k miles on in a private sale.
Be patient one will come up soon and there great cars.
