I cant decide on founders or custom either ... hard choice ! Really can't be doing with noisy gpus nowadays ... how bad is the 1080 founders compared to say the strix 1080 ?
I can tell you that the MSI Armor OC cooler was quiet at 100% speed, and had to turn off the 3 Vardars bellow 50% to hear it (working at 80% 24/). While is very efficient allowing the card to work at 2139 core. (WC was doing 2190).
To put in perspective the Gibabyte 2 fan GTX780 cooler, was loud as a hair-dryer.
Just my experience with after market coolers :)

I think the Palit/Gainward Jetstream cooler is generally considered the best from a noise and cooling perspective, but they don't tick the boxes of a lot of brand snobs so generally get overlooked.

the main issue with those cards has nothing to do with snobism but with the warranty. 2 years I think it is which is not that great for such expensive products. For me for example, I prefer Zotac, more expensive but 5 year warranty.

Which is fine if you intend to keep it for 5 years. As you can see from this thread, lots of 1080 owners are jumping along with 980ti owners, 2 years warranty is enough to cover regular upgraders.

so would you know about how long till the aftermarket 1080tis are released? will it be like 2 months?

Pictures of AIB 1080's are coming through so i would be expecting a few weeks after the launch of the 1080Ti. Not a vast difference over the 1080 pcb so shouldnt be hugely difficult for AIB partners.

There were AIB cards available for the 980Ti launch so who knows ;).

Absolutely buying one.

I bought my 980 on the 24th Oct, 2014. When the 980 Ti came out I told myself I would wait for the next gen Ti before upgrading.

Never thought it would be nearly 2.5 years later before that happened!

Question:
If I can get a GTX1080 for under £500, would you consider it a worthwhile upgrade from a 980Ti?

Currently thinking no. But open to persuasion.

Not worth an upgrade from a 980ti. It's essentially the same thing as upgrading from a 1070 to a 1080. Now ask yourself would you do that if you had a 1070?

A 1080ti on the other hand, is very much okay for upgrading. I'd say 980ti/1070 maximum, people should consider upgrading. Anyone who wants to get rid of a 1080/TXP must be rich/amazing at selling old cards to be able to upgrade so soon.

I have had a few FE cards in my time and they are noisy buggers in truth and give me a custom cooled card (like the Strix) anytime over the FE unless you are water cooling :) I will be waiting for the custom cooled cards this time and MSI or Gigabyte for me :)

Good choice Greg. I hope the card you choose just happens to be the best custom-cooled one, then you can show us how amazing it is in your review and we'll buy it (if Vega sucks).

MSI Gaming was the jam for 970s, no noise under 60 degrees, quiet after that, never too far above that in temps and an amazing overclocker. Unfortunately they seem to have gone the stingy route with the 1000 series, so they aren't the best cooler for the money anymore. Strix was just as quiet, but not as well overclocking and Gigabyte G1 wasn't as quiet. Noise matters to me, so I won't be getting any noisy cards.

I'd be going for aftermarket no ifs ands or buts. Founders style is good for SLI only IMO. I got my AMP! GTX 980ti on launch day I think which was... 28th June 2015. Going via my email invoice.

Tempted to go back to a blower cooler so it dumps all the heat outside my case. My current 980Ti is forcing me to increase my other case fans, which seems to be creating more noise overall than when I had a Titan XM blower in there. Not too fussed about noise anyway as I only use headphones.

I told myself I'd wait for the 1080Ti, but £699 though, hmm. Guess it could be worse.
