Who's in to electric RC cars?

HPi firestorm seems to be the one. I'll check it out when I get home this evening. I seem to remember that it looks similar to the Rustler.
Thanks guys

I bought this earlier today off one of the guys at the club. It's a Mugen MBX6, basically the buggy version of my truggy. It's a quick car with the right driver, i've seen it end up in the A final at most of the meetings i've been at.

Even more so that Pidge (Lee Martin) is racing for them this year.

Hey all looking on the web, and RC forums, ppl seem to prefer the Rustler vs the Firestorm. Do any of you have experience with both? and potential advise me either way pls?

Thanks

Nice looking car by the way

Just built one of these little things. Costs about £90 and are getting VERY popular at my local club:

Tonight i have to spray a shell and put the electrics in.

As stated earlier in this thread, the Firestorm is the stronger of the two out of the box, the Rustler needs a few upgrades to take it up to the same levels of durability as the Firestorm, namely RPM suspension arms and RPM or T-Bone bumpers.

I've had a Rustler for the past 15 years and in my experience it's a tough thing. You can't go wrong with it and spares are easy to get for them. The front steering blocks can be a bit of a weak point at times but replacement RPM ones are tougher. I haven't had the experience of the Firestorm but they are good from what I hear

Ok,
I've put some bids on some crazy auction site.

Whats the difference between the standard version of the Traxxas Rustler VXL and the normal version

VXL:

Standard:

Obviously, one is a lot slower (for some reason?) but I love the look of the Rustler going so quick. Would be amazing to play with!

Although, if theres literally nothing in them but a better battery, i'll save my money!

What you think?
Cheers,
Mark

Normal one uses a brushed motor, the VXL uses a brushless motor, and as such has much more power. Brushless systems are more efficient too, so you get a better run time, especially on LiPo batteries.

You would need to change both the motor and the ESC (Electronic Speed Controller), but yes, you can upgrade the electrics. No need to stick to Traxxas either, there are loads of awesome aftermarket motors and ESCs you could use :)

I guess Traxxas are the rolls royce type cars, overpriced and all that?

Got any links to ones which would be fast as hell? And a bit cheaper?

Most of my hobbies tend to last a few days, then get stuck in the attic/shed! The weather is nice at the moment though, so want a new hobby. Cheaper the better, but without killing the speed in the process :p

Certainly not the Rolls Royce but they are one of the better manufacturers, along with HPI etc. If you want something similar to the Rustler and Firestorm but a fair bit cheaper look at the Speed Passion RS2:

It's no looker, but it's brushless as standard and is quick and tough, I bought one for my 8-year-old son and it is tough as old boots. Only real weakness is the brittle bodyshell which is easily damaged.

It doesn't come with a battery or charger either, but it's still a cracking little truck for the money.

Nice! that is cheap :D
My only question with that is, for speed, am I limited by the brushless motor or with the type of batteries I get?
eg. If i get lipo batteries, will that give me awesome crazy speeds? :p

I just had an idea while reading through the rest of this thread!

My brother has a fairly new-ish (2-3 years old) nitro, which isn't working anymore.
The body/shell is perfect though.

Can I convert this to electric do you think?

I used to do the whole off road rc, but i was into the nitro scene, but general costs and travelling was getting too much for my wallet to take, so packed it in a couple of years ago and got myself a traxxas slash, just to play abut with, great car and it takes a beating and keeps on ticking

The stock ESC is only rated to 2S Lipo, (a 2S pack being 7.4v), but it is pretty damn quick anyway on 2S.

Anything can be converted, but depending on the car in question it might not be straightforward, it may need it's diffs uprating for example.

Just been to my brothers house to pick up his nitro car.

I'm not keen on the nitro since they are crazy noisy!!

Either way, the car is a HBX VRX-2 ...1/8th scale. (RiverHobby?)

This is someones youtube video of one:

Any idea how straight forward this is?

I've been watching videos of all sorts of cars on youtube today and I'm stupidly excited! I'm 30 this year too! :p

i believe for a quick run round the park it will fine as long as you get a decent tune on the engine, dont think spares are to easy to find, but if memory serves correct they copied heavily from a mugen MBX-5 of which there are loads of spares

HTH
