Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

Well i am going to guess its not that easy to replicate the problem to ensure the fix is working across all different memory types etc. Or it's down to the classic problem of fixing one issue but breaking something else. Would be nice to find out but i guess we will not get given the info lol

I suspect this issue is more complex than it may seem at first glance so delaying the fix is probably the right move, so long as it doesn't keep getting delayed.

Thanks Warsam,

Does make you wonder as to the cause of this delay though..
Maybe the problem isn't as easy to fix as first thought.

Thanks for the update , but I don't think I'm going to wait. Something clearly isn't right with the cards that "BlackScreen". So mine is going back tmro.

Hi there...from what I understand, and this is just my thoughts on the topic, developers (gaming, programmers, driver devs. etc), go through a thorough QA phase before releasing any public facing patches/drivers etc. This could be a possible reason.

Maybe for a full release, but something like this should be a hotfix/beta as soon as possible, with a load of disclaimers just in case.

After all, this is an issue that has been going on for quite some time, since the release of the R9-290(X) cards. I would think at this point you'd want to get any kind of fix out to your upset customers right away.

Even with minor builds / hotfixs you still have to go into a QA cycle but not a full one depends on the fix / impact of course, but that would have been factored in when they said that it will be ready today. Going into QA would not all of a sudden cause a delay like they just remembered they had to do it they would have known that before setting a date. The problem is it did not pass QA or they can't work out how to fix it yet. ;)

Playing BF4 on stock volts, OC 1150/1450. No black screens and running smoothly. On Beta 9.2 drives

Edit: Removed Asus GPU tweak and using Afterburner

How come this issue got through Q&A if the process is so thorough? :p

It must surely be hardware related if RMA'ing cards and receiving replacements has proven to be the only 'fix' for those affected so far.

With this kind of emergency hotfix, you would just do the one fix, and test that one fix. Everything else isn't touched, and unexpected behaviour in other applications is a possibility. You get the customers sorted ASAP, and get a properly tested fix out a few days l ater.

It's not like people haven't been complaining about this for some time, so I'm pretty sure last minute QA didn't suddenly delay a release. More likely the problem is not so easy or simple to fix.

You don't finally acknowledge the problem, promise a fix, and then let your customers down again.

****ing WHQL 13.11 drivers.
Installed yesterday and black screen on windows same as on beta 9.2
I am going back to unofficial 13.11 whql for me those are most stable drivers.

WHQL 13.11 is the same as beta 9.2 so it won't stop black screens.

I now have an RMA number for my card and have 28 days to send it back, If the drivers are released in the next "few days" it should give me time to see if the problem is fixed before my RMA time runs out.

Or do you think I should just get a replacement? Who has RMA'd there card because of the blackscreen problem and received a working card as a replacement?

Also ,does your R9 290x drop to 40 fps often enough in battle @ ultra settings @ 1080p in Bf4?

Mine does quite abit. Hainen Resort map , out side the Hotel (c) it's at 40f-50fps most of the time.

Not complaining , just wondering if others are the same. It could be my CPU holding it back?

I have an old i7 920 @ 3.7 gz. Is this CPU good enough to get the best out of the R9 290x??

Edit: Two blackcreens this morning playing BF4 (I know i know ,I should be at work anyway lol )

i will check that map tonight and see what its like for me. i have my 920 clocked at 4.2 though.

Is it me or is black screens way more prevalent at higher resolutions? My monitor's native res is 2560x1440 and I get constant black screens (loss of signal to monitor), whereas at 1920x1080 I rarely get black screens.
