Why is AMD quiet about black screens on 290x?

@Sh0ckdoctrine

I have seen my 290x drop to about 45fps on the same map but i noticed this when the card was throttling. So i raised the fan speed to about 45ish constaint to keep it sweet and the power target to + 50% and now on the same map i dont have a problem.

Seems like my card is power crazy/ hungry and needs a bit more fan and power target at stock to ensure it does not throttle :) This is on the beta 9.2 drivers i did not get it on the older ones going to roll back the driver and see if it changes i am sure the 9.2 ones were meant to change the way the fan speed was calculated and make it work a little harder/smarter but i think its a little worse on my card now.

hope that helps a little.

I'll try upping the power 50% and upping my fan speed then .

Thanks.

My replacement Sapphire turned up today. Elpida memory.

Benched for 4 hours this evening and could *not* replicate the issue.

Go figure.

(No haribo in RMA replacements, taking the ****. Going to shop elsewhere now.)

Kudos to OC for the quick replacement. So new one works fine with no other changes, the old one must have had something wrong with it.

I still dont see what the updated driver fix is going to do for others other than mask the problem somehow.

Same here mate. The fact that some are crashing and others are not speaks Volumes.

Ok so I have done some testing on my card.

I have an Asus 290x on Beta 9.2 on win 8.1.

Stock volts, 50+ power limit, running 1160/1500. 4 hours of BF4 and benching, no artifacts or no black screens.

I will test games in higher volts. I can push 1270/1600 with 1.3v on stock bios.

Edit: I also have Elpida memory

Thats a nice overclock 1270/1600 @ 1.3v thats great are you under water ?

On the stock cooler @1.3v with my asus bios flashed sapphire on the stock cooler with fan @ 100% i can only get to 1170/1600 without any artifacts i am wondering if i dont have a good clocker my asic is 71.9% so just looking for some info and trying to work out if i go water will i be able to push it any more ?

any ideas whould be great cheers dudes.

hard to say, I tried cool it with outside air my 290 would still artefact at to much mhz. It might help a bit with watercooling though but I dont expect things to take off much, the card can do more but cant say I am dissapointed with 200mhz+ oc.

Cheers for the post back dude, and you are right its not dissapointing at all just checking if it will be worth it but as you say its hard to tell really :)

Im under water. You need to check your temps, if you are hitting high temps you will be down throttling your GPU automatically.

Under water whilst gaming, The GPU at hottest is 47 degrees. VRMS 41 and 37 degrees. Of course being that low there is no chance of throttling so you will be getting the most out of the card.

Again it all depends on the temps.

Edit: And my machine is nice and quiet :D

Dropping the core clock to 900MHz is still the only way I can play any game without my monitor cutting out at it's native 2560x1440 (weirdly, stock clocks are fine at 1920x1080).

I wonder if the new drivers will actually allow me to play at the stock 1000MHz. Otherwise I think I'm gonna send this card back.
