Why you SHOULD be using Firefox

Looks like I’ll be coming back to using FF again soon. It’s going to be one of, if not, the only browser that’s going to continue supporting MV2 extensions for the foreseeable beyond June 2025.

Hopefully Firefox have sorted out some of the clunkyness and playback bugs that I experienced last time.

Thank heavens that can be removed now. I hated not being able to remove it. Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that we could now remove that. :)
I have actually forced the button in my custom css file on to the menu bar.

It gives you a native vertical tabs which is vastly superior to inefficient horizontal tabs.

Considering all the padding and rubbish on toolbars, its crazy how much negative feedback to new icon gave, interestingly for me the icon changed in the last .0 release, and in the .3 release the icon changed back again, that was nowhere in the .3 release notes. Luckily none of this meddling broke my custom css vertical tabs setup.

Can see I have no tabs bar, not using a tabs menu addon either, if I click the tabs icon at top right, I get a drop down with very compact listing of tabs for the window. This particular window I have 176 tabs right now, so this is much more efficient than the vertical tabs bar.

Not sure why people waste pixel space by having the menu bar visible though, it's not something that needs to be active at all times as you can insta-show it by tapping alt if ever needed

I don't usually have it showing, but depending on your usage it can be more efficient to have it showing all the time.

I'm officially back on Firefox, synced up across devices, and most probably for good now.

Seems playback issues that I experienced last time have been fixed too.

Is there not a risk of Mozilla making changes to Firefox that cause a custom CSS to not work following an update? If I were convinced it was a stable process then I might make some changes but I can't help but feel a future Firefox update might break any custom CSS rules.

It can happen, but generally it's a pretty quick fix if they do decide to make changes as they're usually minor - but big changes can happen. I've maintained as custom UserChrome.css for a while now and very rarely have issues.

I got away from Chrome last year. Firefox and Brave are good.

I like the idea of Brave but had a fair few compatibility issues in my first stint of using it so I went back to Chrome

In the process of another try but the syncing of passwords and bookmarks is a pain.

Having said all that, I think Chrome is a good option. Can use on android or iPhone or PC...and I'm not a p**do or an international spy so there's nothing worth hiding from anyone

There is always a risk, but I have had my CSS setup for a long time now, and it has held. I would hazard a guess they try to be careful on maintaining compatibility with updates on this sort of stuff.

Other changes I made on CSS.

1 - For some odd reason current tab isnt highlighted on vertical tabs by default, with my change it is.
2 - If using sidebar, header is hidden.
3 - Global default font size adjustment.
4 - Scroll bar width, more narrow.
5 - Removed the add to search on context menu that firefox added some time back.
6 - The icons to the left of my vertical tabs icon had to be moved left to make room.
7 - I had to change so all tab buttons go on title bar, to even allow the button to be present on title bar, as I have the actual tab bar hidden.
8 - Adjusted tab bar height to 0 to help facilitate this.

Microsoft PlayReady encrypted media playback is now being rolled out to select sites on Windows. Through this support, we are gradually rolling out a 1080p baseline and 4K Ultra HD support with key streaming partners. An added benefit is that viewers get less battery drain and better performance when streaming their favorite movies and shows.

Ironically, I moved away from Edge as I noticed most photo links on here dont show, just have the title.

Annoyingly this one is the same in firefox as are some others. Better but not great.

Something I do find Firefox struggles with is watching streaming video on YouTube, especially if you have multiple streams up at a time and/or hop streams a lot. RAM and CPU use is often higher than other browsers while doing that and not infrequently after a couple of hours or so the performance of tabs with streaming content will degrade, even if you close and reopen them, sometimes with the videos eventually constantly rebuffering or constantly dropping out of live sync without it being a connection or stream host issue - immediately solved on entirely closing the browser and restarting it.
