Will Smith hits Chris Rock on Oscars stage

Here we go, here come 'other people's opinions' being wheeled out. Like has happened so much in thus thread, so much of it is people regurgitating other peoples' opinions as their own and thinking they are the ones who have the original opinion, when it's the opposite.

Look, I'm a fan of Steve Hughes. I've always liked his stuff BUT there are some things you do not take the **** out of. Medical conditions, rapes, murders etc. There is a line and saying "grow up and stop being offended" does not cut it in all situations. If you say "there should be no line" then you are most likely unsocialised.

Tell me how it's not happening where everyone is getting offended at everything... Or it's protesting cancelling/boycotting that happens. Mob rule is real.

I'm not saying it's right to insult those who has medical conditions but mob rule is reality.

Thats bad news for Jimmy Carr, thats pretty much his entire stand up act :D

I remember Jack Dee was the one before Carr who got a lot of people's backs up with alternative comedy.

Anyone noted the irony that one comedian can’t take a joke from another comedian?

Let's be honest here, this wasn't really about the joke. The way WS shouted down CR afterwards, it seems the problem is the Smith family. He was in defence mode, almost primal if you look at his eyes. Very understandable, but in his own words "unacceptable and inexcusable".

Carr doesn't make jokes about real people who have been raped and murdered. Normally it's "my mate" or some fictional character.

Ah, well you hadnt specified in your original post that it had to be about a real person, in that case yeah I cant think of too many stand up comedians who have made jokes about a real persons murder or rape. I imagine if I was to search I could find some though, I recall more than one comedian who has cracked a joke about the disappearance of Madeline Mccann over the years and I do know that Ricky Gervais has done some jokes about people with certain medical conditions , dont think he has done rape or murder though.

Will Smith isn't a comedian? He did a short 10 minute stand up for his 50th birthday bucket list and even he admitted he bombed when he had most the material written by Dave Chappelle

He roasts people in the audience to their face. Then they are paying customers and participating, similar in a way to going to one of these swanky ceremonies.

Smith (Jada) hasn't been heckled on the street by Rock.

Edited for clarity.

Thats because Will Smith is a nutjob, like most of his family. The only one of them who seems to be normal is Trey Smith, the others are narcissists, cheaters, time and space controlling children and a variety of other psychological issues, Trey at least seems grounded on this planet.

Comedians are already talking today how it's dead in case someone gets offended.

Look how old this is and what was happening then. It's from 2007. It still stands today.

So 15 years ago comedy was dead......and today it's....still dead? More dead? I'm confused.

Seems to me comedians are just as free to make as poor taste jokes as they always have been....only difference now is there are more keyboard warriors whining about 'wokies' being used by politicians trying to stir up emotions in gullible people.

He has been in loads of comedies, he is the Fresh Prince, sure it was a while ago but he knows what a joke is. He laughed at it 5 seconds before he slapped CR.

And come on, a comedian isn't and doesn't have to be exclusively a STAND UP comedian.

It's not so much dead, but backlash is now to be expected and part of the job it seems. Boyle, Gervais, Carr, Chappelle are the ones that spring to mind. They are fantastic comedians that push things as far as they can and break new ground. What's the alternative, ****ing Michael McIntyre?

Comedy is about finding that internal thing inside someone that makes them laugh before realising what was said. It's why people laugh at Carr's stuff, then there is a sharp intake of breath as their brains process what was said. Comedy that doesn't push the boundaries is boring as hell imo.

Dig the look, fit and strong to play G.I. Jane." The joke is on the haircut
Exactly what I was saying yesterday. It was a joke, but not an insult, but in fact a round about compliment. In no way was what he said a negative comment.

To those who still think it's an insult, would you say that if Chris Rock has said this instead...

"jada, love ya, cleopatra has risen from the dead"

Because she was wearing gold, outfits etc that look like cleopatra, someone considered some hot Egyptian Queen.

Is that an insult too?

Change my mind.

Just because the hair cut was a result of an illness, doesn't mean he said the haircut looked bad, nor does it mean you can't joke about how good it looks, especially after the person with it has said you have to laugh and joke about it now.

Exactly. You never had cancel culture back in 2007. You never had this type of behaviour back in 2010 but it was starting to appear but never mainstream as it is now. Quite unreal how some people cannot put two and two together to see what has been happening but you get nothing but deflection.

We're also near that point you're not allowed to laugh unless it follows the trend that everyone agrees with. Look at everything now, it's follow the herd of trending.

He may be a comedy actor but I wouldn't describe him as a comedian as there is a difference. You may get some comedians who become actors like Eddie Murphy, Jim Carey or Robin Williams but that doesn't mean the two are the same.

Being able to act and recite some writers jokes doesn't make you a comedians immediately.

Like I said, gullible people people being exploited. 'Cancel culture' wasn't around in 2007 because it's the phrase was invented by the political right in recent years....it used to be called 'political correctness' and the same people were whining about it back then as are now.

Carr is a classic example of someone cashing in on manufactured outrage....and you fall for it, hook, line and sinker.

You are just nit-picking now. Your argument is basically saying he is not funny enough so he isn't expected to take a joke that he found funny.

.yes a woman can defend her own honour but what’s wrong with her husband doing that?

To normal rational humans, nothing, but to 3rd wave feminists its an example of the patriarchy still holding back women and a personal affront to every woman alive - at least I think that's the complaint.

You keep mentioning beauty as a part of it, that's not why people are mad.

It's that his joke was person A looking like person B (valid, fine not an issue) but that person A has a medical condition causing her to look like that, so should be off-limits to joke about. Would be the same if she had chemotherapy, or similar. If she was just short haired through choice (like will smith, or myself) then it's considered ok.

I'm not putting an opinion in there, just explaining the other sides point of view as you keep missing it it seems. Personally i think if it's wrong to make fun of someone with alopecia, then it's wrong to make fun of a guy who is balding too as it's not a natural old age thing, it's a genetics thing for some guys in the same way alopecia is for anyone. We live in a world of double standards sadly and that's why jokes are funny one year and apalling the next.

Late response but - I am missing that element of the point sort of on purpose, to counter the fact that the vast majority online seem to be hyper-focused on it. And also clearly there was some element of choice involved - your hair is becoming patchy/falling out; do you A. Just leave it alone, B. Shave it, C. Shave it then wear a wig/weave whatever, D. Wear a hat... Appreciate that it's a choice being made due to potentially upsetting factors outside of her control but it does make it a little different to say, someone who has gone through Chemo. Weighing up those options she's decided to go for the shaved head look (maybe she was inspired by portrayals like GI Jane for all we know!)

How exactly is Carr "cashing in". He hasn't changed a bit, however predicted outrage on his latest material and he was right. It's tame in comparison to other stuff.

To be fair, I am just bored at work and being pedantic.

But that wasn't my argument. I just didn't agree with your post that it's ironic a comedian couldn't take another comedians joke. When in truth it was just an actor that couldn't take a comedians joke. Whether or not he had to 'take' the joke is a different matter all together. But you're right that for the most part I was just nit-picking
