So to clarify, i'm either gonna go PAYG & simplicity or contract for either a 3G or 3GS.

However, on the above PAYG link it says the following:

When you buy a new iPhone from us, we'll give you 12 months of unlimited web and Wi-Fi. It's called the O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On, and you'll be able to keep it at the end of the 12 months for £10 a month if you like. We'll let you know when it's time.

To get your 12 months, you'll need to use the new sim that comes with your iPhone 3G. If you're already on O2 Pay & Go, it's easy to transfer your number to your new phone. Just fill in this form.

So by reading that you wont get 12months using simplicity??

Nope, not unless in a month or two's time o2 change their stance on how much it costs

If it's true that the contract that users took out at the time of the 3G's release is up in January even then the upgrade probably wont be worth doing until January anyway

I bought my 3G on release date 11/7/08 and was told by O2 yesterday that 3/11/09 is my "upgrade" day.... no idea how they chose that day but hey?

I will have to wait. The prices otherwise are just silly.

That's if you go with the iPhone PAYG sim, you're not.

You buy the PAYG 3GS but don't use the sim.
Get a Simplicity sim with free bolt on of unlimited web
Use that in the 3GS phone.

cheers!

Looking into it that may be what i do, though the O2 website is not letting you checkout with Simplicity, which worries me that they are changing things perhaps, or may change the simplicity deal?

Also - can i port my number from Voda using my PAC to a simplicity? If so, do i need the pac when i order, or can i order, then transfer later?

cheers again

I really can't see these flying off the shelves at all like the previous models did.

The majority of people that want an iPhone will have purchased the 3G model already. These people will mostly be locked into 18 or 24 month contracts so won't be upgrading for at least 6 more months. In this group will be the technology enthusiasts that are put off by the high price of breaking their contracts.

The question at launch is therefore is the 3GS enough to tempt people that didn't buy a 3G iPhone. I can't really see that being the case. Yes the better camera will have some mainstream appeal but Joe Bloggs on the street looking at just megapixels as it'll be marketed will see higher numbers on other phones and not realise quality is more important. I also can't see faster HSDPA, a compass, a faster UI or voice recognition swaying the general public either. All of these seem more aimed at the enthusiast community.

Last year I upgraded the 2G model to 3G and made some money in the process. Selling my 2G phone for £300 on eBay, paying £180 for the new 3G model and making £120 in the process. With £200 being the going rate for the 16Gb 3G model I'd be tempted to do the same this year if o2 offered upgrades again. Unfortunately that isn't the case at the moment so I, like many people, won't be upgrading.

Perhaps there will be some people coming to the end of their 2G contracts that may upgrade, but they're fools if they didn't sell their phones and swap to 3G last summer when it was the only model that could be unlocked.

No, I don't want to spend that much on a phone outright and vary rarely go over £20 a month on my current contract so don't want to spend more than this just for a gadget.

I'll probably be getting a 16Gb on pay monthly at some point, but not in the first couple of weeks after launch. Will finally be able to get rid of my N95 8Gb :).

My 3G iphone contract ends next month (Bought Feb 08). Does it then automatically move onto a rolling 1 month contract or do I need to call O2?

Not sure the 3Gs is worth the upgrade but a workmate reckons it has a new graphics card, processor and ram so the games will be a lot better. I'm going to wait and see.

Now? No. In the future? Possibly.

With my contract up in January I think I will keep my iPhone 2G I hope to buy soon(Simplicity for a few months), until Apples WWDC to see if there is a bigger and better upgrade to the phone. If there is I'll start a fresh contract with that, if not, get the 3GS.

How did you manage to pickup a 3G iPhone five months before it got released (July 2008)? :p

I lost my 2G about 5 months ago and the insurance gave me a 3G one as 2G aren't made anymore! Was a nice suprise! So I'm still on my original 2G contract but with a 3G phone :D

Recently sold my 2G, I am tempted by these 3Gs model but I will be needing a reliable unlock solution to come along so I can use my T-mobile contract sim inside it.

I don't see anything that would make any 3G user upgrade. I won't be.

The Tethering should be free like any other phone. They are taking the micky with the bolt on.

The 02 website has all the answers.

Yes you can transfer your PAC, you take the code with you when you purchase the iPhone and it's ported over 2 days after the purchase (you get a temporary number until it's sorted).

All iPhone tariffs comes with unlimited net usage, you don't need to add it on. It's only the Simplicity tariff that requires anything extra, it's just that it's cheaper that's why people want to use it in the iPhone :p

On the 19th: no. At some point in the next six months: probably.

For me, the increased speed is a good enough reason to upgrade on its own.

YES!

Although PAYG Vs Contract is still yet to be decided!

Ditto, and ditto.

Bearing in mind what I'd likely get for my 16GB White 3G, I don't think the pricing is that crazy.

For some reason, My O2 is showing my contract renewal date as last Thursday, the date my original contract would have expired, which is odd seeing as I upgraded in September.

With any luck, they screwed up that upgrade and I'll be able to get the upgrade next week :) If not, I'll probably pick one up P&G after I've had a little time with 3.0 on my 3G.
