Windows 10

Just because they now open in a window rather than full screen doesn't suddenly mean the Modern UI versions of the apps are any good for a multi monitor, large display computer.

Neither does it mean they are rubbish. Plenty are better than the alternatives.
It's about using the best for each case, not automatically dismissing them out of some silly ill thought out logic.

Looking forward to trying this out, one of the main reasons is the integration with xbox one, I guess I'll wait it out until then & give it a try when it is patched in! :)

And KIA obviously thinks the Modern apps aren't the best in his case :p

You will probably be in the minority if you think the Modern apps are the best for desktop user. Also, dismissing touch focused apps when you don't have a touch screen is hardly silly I'll thought out logic.

well my start menu is now working as before, all desktop applications now run as before!!

next thing id like to sort is, i updated my copy of office from 2013 to 2016 preview, did this on my stream 7 also where it worked perfectly!?? I uninstalled 2013 as it told me, rebooted and ran the 365 installer everything installed fine, but my start menu is a mess, under 'All Programs' it still shows office 2013 still available, and my Outlook icon says Outlook 2013 but it launches 2016!?? and opening the file location shows the shortcut as Outlook 2016 preview!

is there a way to clean up the old crap floating around in the start menu? and rename stuff as it should be?? my ocd is going nuts!! I like a clean start menu!

you could right click on one of the 2013 links > open location > delete files / folders from there?

Ooo Office 2016 is about, I missed that.

Yep!! I used my Office 365 sub that came with my HP Stream 7 (1 PC, 1 Tablet & 1 Phone)

They actually link to nowhere!!! The only option I get is to 'Pin to Start' and I get a blank tile then!

If I go via a 2016 tile and go up a level 2013 is not there!!! I think my Start Menu is a bit FUBAR... :(

My OCD is really going nuts!!! I used to have such a clean Start Menu in Windows 7!!!

weird, opening the file location should still open the folder that the shortcuts are in. Deleting the shortcuts should remove them from the start menu. odd...

Anyone else find the taskbar non responsive some times? For example ill have a window open and when i click too quickly on to another taskbar icon it doesn't change windows. This can be easily recreate by left clicking on different taskbar icons in quick succession.

Well it is as they aren't touch focused.
If anyone thinks that media websites/x86 software is better than the modern apps on any device is frankly mad and hasn't tried them.
Give me now TV, Netflix, audible, amil, calendar etc over the website/x86 software any day of week, they are far better on any pc system.

All of which aren't remotely productive applications at all. If you are using your device as an entertainment platform then I'd agree that the app approach works.
For people wishing to actually do work on a computer then they're a useless fluffy pain in the arse

He was talking about media apps.
And I also said use the best software available. sometimes that's x86, sometimes that modern apps.
Most people use computers for everything, not one or another.

And no they aren't a pain in the rear, it's not like they suddenly open up whist using an x86 app.

And you haven't seen w10 apps obviously.
Like Maya they showed off. Full fledged Maya, that changes with continuum depending what's plugged in.

So is that modern app useless? It's full fledged Maya with extras.

Well it has to default to something. Make sense that its the Modern UI app as its easier for a desktop user to switch the default away from a tablet app than it would be to default all tablet users to the desktop apps.

What's wrong with Windows Media Player? :p

I think this has more to do with money making than anything else. Microsoft can push its media content using modern apps, even if they are dumbed-down and awkward in comparison to desktop applications, as Microsoft calls them.

Windows 8.0: full-screen modern apps by default.
Windows 8.1 Update: desktop apps by default.
Windows 10: windowed modern apps with the odd desktop app thrown in for good measure.

I wonder what the future holds.

The future is everything will very slowly move to modern apps. Modern apps aren't just touch focused they are everything, designed to run on everything. Especially with continuum.
Look up Maya in keynotes day 1 from the build conference. That's the future.

Don't forget, Glaucus was at the pinnacle of championing Windows 8 and 8.1 for immediate corporate adoption. The corporate world was to never witness a classic desktop again as the new Start Menu was all the rage and companies were advised by Glaucus to immediately spend significant amounts on touch screen monitors.

Look how that turned out....

;)
