Windows 10

I'm not sure if this is only for Windows Insiders like myself at the moment, but if you get this:

Then i recommend you reserve a copy. Because it will download Win 10 over the next few weeks, then download the remaining parts/RTM updates just before release. So it's ready to install on release day.

This way you'll get the update sooner because i imagine servers/download speeds will be crippled on the release week from all the downloads.

I'm on insider but I've not seen it on my devices yet :(

I have seen the reserve icon in the notification tray on my old Win7 64bit Machine (dates right back to the release of Win 7.)

I have 2 newer machines with Win7 Ultimate on - I hope that any upgrades carry across the fact I have ultimate and give me whatever the equivalent is - if I chose to upgrade that is.

has any one had this appear on 8.1 that's also connected to a domain and not running enterprise version of the os?

I have a Samsung laptop running windows 8.1 which the W10 upgrade appeared on but it wasn't on a domain.

don't think the message appears on PC's connected to a domain

Yep, you will get w10 pro.

◾Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium devices upgrade to Windows 10 Home
◾Windows 8/8.1 Pro and Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate devices upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

I notice it says in the upgrade info icon link: Windows media center will be uninstalled during the upgrade. It isn't available in windows 10.

Nice :-( Is there anything to replace it from MS?

.

nope :(
Although I expect it'll be worth upgrading fairly soon due to nowtv/Netflix and other media apps. I just need to sort something out for live TV.

◾The free Windows 10 upgrade is delivered through Windows Update; domain-joined machines can manually get the update via Windows Update. The upgrade cannot be deployed through WSUS.

I just got the little system tray Upgrade reservation button on my tablet running Windows 8.1.

It was now automatically download W10 on July 29th.

Cool, I may do my laptop straight away to see how it goes as I dont use it.

I've a billion different things running on my old I7920 & its my main machine, so wary of that.

If Poser Pro 2014 proves to be incompatible it will be a no go for my power machine as well.

Not sure if this will be an issue or not.

Logged into win 7 machine yesterday and noticed win 10 reservation thing and went through process putting in my outlook.com email. Lovely. Said I had reserved my copy.

Fired up Win 8.1 pc, which is linked to my outlook.com account and noticed the little reserve win 10 icon. Opened it up and instead of it asking me to reserve my copy of win 10, it just said congrats you already have your copy reserved. :/

Hmm Not sure if that means I will only get one copy or two. I did run it a few times on the win 8.1 machine and finally it did seem to process something then say congrats youve reserved your copy.

It better give me one each!

There's part of me that thinks "Yeay, free upgrade!!" yet another part of me thinks, Hmmm can of worms here. Dunno.

It's always the case when you start fiddling with a stable system. Who knows what's going to happen when you start installing a new OS? Even if the upgrade goes perfectly (it won't) and all your apps and drivers work (they won't), you've still got a learning curve where to figure out how to do the same old stuff in a new way.

What's happening for devices which a clean install of the W10 preview went on?
My Windows 8.1 key was an MSDN one.

Clean installs of Windows 10 Preview will not get the upgrade as there is no CD key under it anywhere.

If you upgraded W7 or W8 to W10 Preview using the in place Windows Update method you will be able to get the free upgrade. I've yet to see anyone who has done this confirm they have had the task bar icon appear for them though.

Could it be that MS is using peer-2-peer to spread the download (and use your bandwidth instead of theirs)?
