Windows 10

Maybe it was too much to expect that my Linx 10 tablet with "Windows 8.1 with bing" would qualify for the update :(

Still our other PC's have now been registered and all seems good to go...

Already have I don't know how people survive on win7 an older. Was waiting for years for win8 to come out to match the capability of smart phones.
Couldn't cope without mail and calendar app. It makes live so much easier. How people still log on to several websites to get mail is confusing for me.

Ok some probably run outlook/thunderbird, but never got on with them and just not needed at home.

Let alone if you consume media, Netflix, now TV and other apps are all far far better than the website alternatives. And still all the function of the desktop.

Anyone know how to keep the icon permenantly hidden?
Keeps re-appearing from hidden status when I reboot, and it's irritating me!

No intention of upgrading either machine to Windows 10!

Got my free reservation added, roll on 29th July!

So is everyone upgrading to win 10? I have win7 pro and happy with it so not sure whether to upgrade or not :/

Of course! My Win7 is smooth as silk too but Win 10 is nicer and it's free. There's no reason not to upgrade.

Personally I will be using none of the "Apps" on the most part, have no intention of using any cloud based system from MS or anyone else and will merely enjoy the new features of Windows instead.

Clean installs of Windows 10 Preview will not get the upgrade as there is no CD key under it anywhere.

If you upgraded W7 or W8 to W10 Preview using the in place Windows Update method you will be able to get the free upgrade. I've yet to see anyone who has done this confirm they have had the task bar icon appear for them though.

That doesn't actually answer the question though, as obviously I had/have a Windows 8.1 key that's been used with my live account.

Will the Windows 10 upgrade allow you to do a clean install or just upgrade?

Install the upgrade, then use Windows 10's "Refresh" mode which will give you a clean install, as per MS's FAQ on the very question posed in there.

Windows 7 was such a nice fluid OS. I admit though, it does look dated. More so task manager. I've never liked Aero though. It always appeared a bit dirty/rugged? Like used crayons. Not that I'm keen on the flatness of Windows 8 which feels like some clone of Windows Whistler.

Windows 8.1 with Bing does qualify for a free upgrade, but it doesn't look like we get this early reservation option. I expect the 'with Bing' version might come later, like the RT and Windows Phone versions of 10 are going to.

The upgrade isn't per live account or email or anything. Its an upgrade to an existing licensed 7 or 8 installation.

If you have installed a clean 10 Preview from an ISO, it isn't, and never has been, a licensed 7 or 8 install, so no upgrade.

To get the upgrade you need to have 8.1 installed using a valid key.

Will the Windows 10 upgrade allow you to do a clean install or just upgrade?

Both.

Reserved my copy. But then again why wouldn't you if it's free.

Anyway of hiding the Upgrade icon that is now permanently in my task bar?

Seems that way. MS have only explicitly said that Enterprise versions won't get the free upgrade.

I mistakenly uninstalled the KB3035583 from my Windows 8.1 with Bing laptop and now it won't find it again through Windows Update... :(

I just checked my Asus X205TA, it has the GWX files in the Task Scheduler, but running any of them doesn't do anything.

Do you have Internet Explorer disabled? If so enable it. Then do a restart and check for updates. Once it's all done you should get the icon pop up.

I too had all the GWX files and no icon but enabling IE fixed it for me.

MS have said if you have installed w10 preview you can upgrade to w10 without a clean install. They just haven't told us how yet.

There will have to be some way of registering a W7 or 8 key as a W10 one without doing the update, to cover those who can't take the Windows Update method (like 8.0 users or 7 users without SP1). So maybe you can do that and then just apply your key to W10 once it turns into the final version and presumably then asks for a product key.

This is what I'm hoping as I CBA to reinstall my PC again now that my latest W10 Preview build is running smoothly.

Perhaps simply the process of entering a 7 or 8 key into a 10 installation and then activating it online or over the phone will be enough.

Nope, I use IE11 as my browser on that machine. Have tried restarting. I'll try disabling IE and re-enabling it.

Its not really an upgrade at all its a solid downgrade from where we were previously. Here is a reply from the MS Forum:

Original question:

What if I require a clean install after a year has past?

What if I install the update date when it is released and in 14 months am required to do a clean install / factory reset. Will I be able to install the update again or will I be stuck in Windows 8.1 and need to be a Window's 10 license? Microsoft has advised that the free update will only be free for 12 months after the initial release.

Hi Patrick,
Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.
If you want to perform clean installation after a year you need to pay to get Windows 10 license. Free update will only be free for 12 months.

As I said its not an upgrade its an offer to swap your retail version of Win 8 for an OEM version of Win 10. As soon as for some reason you need to reinstall, hardware change, cpu upgrade whatever, then you will need to put your hand in your pocket for the $199 Retail copy of Win 10 Pro (Probably close to £200 quid by the time the crazy IT exchange rate is applied). TBF MS do this nearly every time. Almost every time they introduce a new O/S they try to make it non transferable from system to system and basically get everyone to buy a one time use OEM licence. They tried it on with Win 8 and got a massive backlash and backed down and made it possible to transfer copies of Win 8 to another build. Now they are doing it again and by the simple addition of suckering you with a bait and switch 'free' copy thats nothing more than a glorified trial version I would say this time they will lumber us all with upgrade versions that are ****e and not usable outside of one system build. If you want a proper version that you can use to install in your various iterations of system build then you will need to pony up the £200 odd. Free my fat hairy arse!
