Windows 10

Should work fine, all my games even on the earliest preview worked fine, in fact everything did.

Apart form on board sound. But even that's been sorted out in the newest build.

If you cant remove domain. You have to wait for release then manually run the update, from within windows update. I assume that means w10 will show up as an optional update.

My quad tuner HTPC will be remaining on 8.1 for the very same reason. It's a real shame they have dropped Media Center. Windows 10 has native support for MKV, FLAC and HEVC which could have brought new functionality to Media Center.

Just use media portal it's just as good if not better, although harder to set up. But not stupidly hard.

You have to upgrade, once you have upgraded, you can then clean install using an ISO.
So if you have win7 32bit and want to change to w10 64bit, you upgrade to win10, you then download ISO and do a clean install if 64bit.

Same if you just want to clean install you just need to upgrade first.

As for this running w10, it'll upgrade to full release if the key is there.

If you clean installed w10 preview you wont need to reinstall w7/w8, however MS haven't said how the process will actually work.

I am using W7 HP ATM. My SSD is full, I have bought a new one but was hoping to do a straight W10 install when the release variant was ready.

That's a pain.

Free up ~4gb update, then do a clean install on new sad, that would be the easiest. 4gb isn't a huge amount and you should be able to get that delete all temporary files, thumbnails and anything else you can.

This is a total guess, but I'm guessing when you upgrade an existing install, it registers your key on the activation centre and puts a tick by w10, so then you can clean install after that.
And people who havenot upgraded in the first year, wont have a tick by w10.

Not really, they will continually add big updates to win10 and those updates are better with testing.
Think of it more like Mobile phone development, where you get several large updates a year, that is where windows is going with w10. Do it'll never be finished.

In the new leaked build there's an option in updates to allow Microsoft to test new features.
So it'll be RTM win10, just if you select it, Ms will push updates to you.

As well as dark theme for project Spartan.
Why are developer names always better than the actual Names.

Come on NVIDIA.
Did anyone else comp become rubbish and stutter g when it upgrade to 10130.
I assume something has slightly changed. Both laptop(upgrade) and desktop(clean install) did this with 10130.

Cba to reload win8 though. But want to play.

Finally from Gabe himself, as long as you are running insider with a Microsoft account, it will upgrade to RTM and will activate, regardless if you upgraded or clean installed.

Getting the final release on July 29th

Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated. Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.

If you are running the Enterprise edition of the Windows 10 Insider Preview, to upgrade to the final release of Windows 10 Enterprise you will need to download and activate it from Volume Licensing Service Center. As a reminder, the Enterprise edition of the Windows 10 Insider Preview is not eligible for the free upgrade offer and can be upgraded to the final release of Windows 10 through an active Software Assurance agreement.

Stay with us as a Windows Insider

As we’ve announced before, the Windows Insider Program will continue even after we release Windows 10 on July 29th. Windows Insiders will continue to receive future flights as we begin to work on the next release immediately after Windows 10 ships. You’ll get to see the latest Windows fixes, features, and updates and give us feedback. So stay with us! Of course, we’ll provide you an option to leave the program and stay on the final build if you choose: but we hope that we’ll continue to provide you great reasons to remain a Windows Insider.

So totally free w10 for those on insider, or did insider only work if you had windows license in the first place?

This bit...

...makes me think you will need to use your existing key at some point. The TP has a key in it, so I wonder if the TP key will not activate the RTM version, and will prompt you to enter your existing key instead? I.e. all TP installs will update to RTM, but it won't necessarily activate.

Well no it's quite clear. It's even in the line before your highlight.

you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated
do it's activated, so then you just clean install. Is anyone who did a clean install of w10 preview not activated?

I posted earlier about the Nvidia driver for Windows 10. In build 10130 it was horrendous in games, I had to un-install it. Yet in build 10134, I can't fault it.

Pthanks, think I'll carry on waiting, I'm away for 10days anyway. So not much point rafting about.

It wont be free for enterprise. As that has extra costs.

And it's more than just apps, you have all the other services, office 365, Skype, onedrive and a dozen other things.

It's in MS best interest to have as many machines out there running windows, they should have gone complete free this time. And I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of the year, they'll release a big upgrade to w10 and go, hey everyone you can do a free upgrade to w10 u1

That quote is from Gabriel Aul from the Microsoft blog on the Microsoft site.

So as long as your copy of windows10 preview is activated and you login with an MS affront it will upgrade to RTM, regardless if there was a key.
Unless of course any one with out a key hasn't managed to activate w10 preview in the first place.

Nope he says you can turn off technical preview.
It's now a button switch in the latest leaks.

Obviously I didn't spot it.
It's a blog post from Microsoft which many news sites have picked up on it.

And I'm not saying it's 100%, but what he has written is pretty clear. Hence the question marks, on has everyone who's done a clean install got it to activate.

Do you know what a question mark is?

What a silly reply, I've already said I'm not saying they will 100% give out license. So your question is meaningless.

I see 4 main things

1) doesn't mean what he has said
2) clean installs of w10 preview shouldn't activate and as such wont upgrade.
3) as you need an ms account, most serials people have used have been registered with the account, so 99% of people have used up a license key.
4) he means what he said, with most people doing an upgrade from w7/w8 they are using a key up. Those who did a clean install get a free license.

That's not how I read it. I* read it as when you upgrade, it will be free for 12 months. Implying that after 12 months it may no longer be free.

* and many other people as I'm not the only one asking this question

This is not the case and has been clarified so many times.

MS is so crap with communication

That's from may 11 so old.
Blog is newer and 20hrs ago he tweeted this

"They can upgrade from win7/8.1 systems or from a system they clean installed with preview ISO as long as it is registered with MSA "

And in a response to that, another question is asked about transferability of the license from a clean install from ISO and he replies

"No, it is tied to that specific pc"

I don't understand why they don't, just like 90% of other company's decide and make a clear and concise article, generally available immediately after the announcement.

Edit - sorry took the wrong end of the stick.

I want to dump this copy of Windows 8 as soon as i can, i plan on getting a new SSD and installing a fresh copy of 10 as soon its released.

I have already reserved my copy of Windows 10.

So my question is:

Will i be able to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 on a brand new SSD?

Yes, but a bit long winded.

First you will need to upgrade your win8.1 to win10 and activate it.
You can then download the ISO, change the HDD over and install w10 on you new SSD.
