Windows 10

nothing official.

but going by rumours, OEM's are getting it in june, and release / launch date in late july, and the first feature update in October

MS could be doing differently this time round.

I would ignore those rumours, there's a reason it's always been 3 months between RTM and release, to allow OEMs, to finalise equipment, get image to the manufactures to put in said devices and then get devices to the stores ready for launch day.

Shipping alone from china is two weeks.
So, so unlikely such reports should have been ignored, rather than believed.

So absolutely nothing about July.

Why do you keep posting rubbish.

Realistically the earliest it could be released is in august, if it RTMs in the next week or two.

Windows 10 is now move close to RTM.

http://wccftech.com/windows-10-release-date-july-29/

Microsoft will trying to finalised code by end of June and hit retail on 29 July.

But newegg now have Windows 10 OEM on pre-order with release date 31 July.

http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-pre-orders-show-up-on-newegg-109-for-home-and-149-for-pro

31st of august not July and really doesn't mean a lot.

As I've said several times, the chance of it going to release to manufacture in June then retail by end of July is pretty much zero. It gives OEMs no time to finalise devices, install w10 and ship devices from china to the shops.

It is possible be RTM in end June then retail by end of July or RTM in mid July then retail by end of August. If you looked back on Windows 8.1 Update 1 it was signed off RTM on 21 Feb 2014 and released to OEMs immediately, it gave OEMs time to finalised devices, installed Windows 8.1 with Update 1 and shipped devices from china to the shops in time for 8 April retail launch as well as download too. That a total of 46 days, really amazing achievable for OEMs but very disappointed Microsoft decided to put ISO download on hold for TechNet subscribers until April, thankfully they managed to get leak very early.

To me, I don't have to wait until end of July or August to download, I will get it hours or days after it hit RTM just like it did with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 8.1 with Update 1.

8.1 was essentially a service pack, nothing like a fall windows release they'll want lots of devices in shops for release. Really the end of august is the earliest it will happen.

Definitely not placeholder prices, it has pre-order prices where people can click it to pre-order it. Retailers had GTA V pre-order price up months before release but never had placeholder price.

Means nothing, it even says prices will change and they'll honour a lower price and refund the difference. It is almost certainly a high priced place holder.

Confused :

Windows 10 will be free (for the first year) so everyone will upgrade for free

but then , how much will it cost ? they are clever not mentioning any prices !!

Nothing, as ling as you upgrade in the first year its free for live.
And as such the price does not matter and they haven't released that yet.

Not sure why everyone getting confused. It's the offer is valid fir the year, not the license.

also just had the pop up to reserve my free upgrade

anyone know if it still comes or keeps windows media centre? I need that to watch tv on

No media centre as far as we know :(. Not sure what I will do on htpc. I think it will be worth upgrading to keep apps up to date and hopefully new apps. But I'll have ti replace media centre with something else.

Just had the Win10 box appear on my lads Win7 machine, have "Reserved" his Win10 copy for when it gets released.

Will stick to my Win8.1 for a while to see what 10 is about.

Is there a catch somewhere? Doesn't seem very MS to give away an OS for free.

No catch, it's not where ma make there money from, it's a declining revenue source in the modern world. They make there money from all the subscriptions and stores. Skype, office, music pass, music, videos, app store etc.

Basically following what apple have done, get as many people on their os as possible and then sell the addons.

Fresh install of w10 and NVIDIA drivers don't work, rubbish.
Although work fine if they were preinstalled and you upgraded. Using built in MS one and it's terribly slow.

This is why I hate driver installers, just give me the actual driver as windows will nearly always use them regardless.

Thanks, I see they have w10 beta drivers for 600 and above, don't have 600 and above though,

And yay that installed and boosted the driver number massively in device manager, now to boot up a game and see if it's worked.

This same sort of query comes up every time MS announce a new version of Windows with slightly different activation procedures, and it's never really been an issue. I highly doubt it'll become one now.

Yep, it's always been what ever the original license is, is what the upgrade license becomes. And from windows 8, OEM = retail with no restrictions on change of hardware or changing it from one pc to another.

Where in windows 7 and before they classed OEM as tied to the mobo. Although it was never really enforced.

so did I read this right when I want too fresh install I can just use the win7 key I have now ?

We don't know other than there will be a win10 ISO available, as to what key we don't know.

But in the past upgrades have just used the base license. So if you have win7 retail then you should be able to change pc/upgrade to hearts content, if you have win 7 OEM technically it's tied to mobo but free to upgrade any other components, if you have win 8 OEM then free to upgrade any component move it to a different system to hearts content. at least that's how it's worked in the past, so until more info is released, that's why I would say is odds on favourite to happen again.

I have seen the reserve icon in the notification tray on my old Win7 64bit Machine (dates right back to the release of Win 7.)

I have 2 newer machines with Win7 Ultimate on - I hope that any upgrades carry across the fact I have ultimate and give me whatever the equivalent is - if I chose to upgrade that is.

Yep, you will get w10 pro.

◾Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium devices upgrade to Windows 10 Home
◾Windows 8/8.1 Pro and Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate devices upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

I notice it says in the upgrade info icon link: Windows media center will be uninstalled during the upgrade. It isn't available in windows 10.

Nice :-( Is there anything to replace it from MS?

.

nope :(
Although I expect it'll be worth upgrading fairly soon due to nowtv/Netflix and other media apps. I just need to sort something out for live TV.

has any one had this appear on 8.1 that's also connected to a domain and not running enterprise version of the os?

◾The free Windows 10 upgrade is delivered through Windows Update; domain-joined machines can manually get the update via Windows Update. The upgrade cannot be deployed through WSUS.

If it's on a domian you have to manually install it from windows update. So I read that as you can't pre book it, not that there's much to gain from that.

Already have I don't know how people survive on win7 an older. Was waiting for years for win8 to come out to match the capability of smart phones.
Couldn't cope without mail and calendar app. It makes live so much easier. How people still log on to several websites to get mail is confusing for me.

Ok some probably run outlook/thunderbird, but never got on with them and just not needed at home.

Let alone if you consume media, Netflix, now TV and other apps are all far far better than the website alternatives. And still all the function of the desktop.
