Windows 10

A big problem with public beta testing is that most people won't log at all :( it's a shame... I've log probably 70% of the problems I've had, the other 30% being automatically resolved with new builds.

Most people want to try something new, not test it... we can see in this thread some people who just want Windows 10 because it's new, and many who are "testing" it...

Except even a small percentage who do is still 10s of thousands many times more than what could internally test.

2ndly it doesn't just rely on people reporting stuff. It can gather and send info back to Ms in it's own.

The only way so far that I've seen is to overwrite a previous Windows 7 or 8 install.

MS have been very vague about the update process to date, but the general consensus seems to be that you will update from a previous Windows 7 /8 install. The update process will tie your hardware (maybe motherboard ID, not specified) to your Windows 10 install.
After that you can wipe and clean install to the same hardware allegedly.

So It's using the OEM licencing model basically.
I've not seen anything about doing a clean install using a retail key.

Probably best to wait for the 29th and onwards, when MS will have to come clean about these details.

They haven't been unclear.
You have to first upgrade, to get your key upgraded. Once you've upgraded. Then you can install on a fresh drive from ISO Microsoft will release for download.
So a bit of extra work, but he can certainly install in a brand new ssd. But only after he's upgraded his old install.

I take it you cant read, may I suggest a different medium to communicate in future.

They said it was "upgrade only" It wasnt. you could do a clean install with the ISO they provided.

Thats it. thats a porkie. When it was realised a clean install could be done, various "how to" sprung up on tech sites because Microsoft were insisting it was Upgrade only.

This is why them being "cagey" about the Win 10 release details suggests to me a similar thing will be possible.

You also couldn't do that, you had to use a place holder key, until you were in, then change to your own key and activate. So it was a work around for us. Not an official method. Untill fairly recently when they changed it.

So I've applied for the free upgrade on a few machines.. Will I get a key for each one? How does it work?

It uses your old key and will take a machine id when you upgrade. so no, no new key.

lol is it even going live at midnight? I can imagine it will just start slowly rolling out over the next few days.

Probably not midnight, but people who reserved a copy it should have downloaded the files over the last few days, to try and prevent servers from crashing on release day.

Hasn't downloaded for me either on HTPC, not that I really care. Laptop and desktop are staying on insider, even though I have valid licenses.

Yes, thats what everybody has been saying, but if you upgrade your hardware you need a new key (ie have to buy windows 10)

I'm the past it's always been linked to motherboard. as far as I know they haven't said how much the machine id has to change before you can't use it. Also phone activation again in the past has 95% of the time worked without even talking to a person.

They've also said you can roll back to 7/8.1 at any time for any reason.

Clean install (after upgrade install) says my insider key is blocked.

Omg. :(

It's ok, your pc is still usable, it's not going to explode. All which happens is a couple if times a day ifpt pops up going activate. Click on it, opens up control panel and then you close control panel and carry on.
Wait a few days for the servers to stop getting hammered in for Ms to resolve some issues.

Asking again, is their no tablet version of Edge?

Nope. It runs in desktop and tablet mode. Bit annoying layout in tablet mode. edge isn't feature complete. Hopefully they'll have an option to move the bar down to the bottom.
Other than that it's fine for tablet.
